Tedford et al. bemerken zudieser Frage in derselben Arbeit 2009, p. 177:"The incomplete evidence at hand points to an origin of the Caninae at the beginning of theOligocene, more or less coincidental with that of its sister taxon, the Borophaginae (Wang et al., 1999),whose first appearance was also obtained from the Brule Formation of the northern Great Plains. The singleramal fragment of Leptocyon sp. A shows only the characteristic jaw and premolar features of theCaninae. Its carnassial bears a bicuspid talonid, but otherwise this tooth, by itself, cannot be unequivocallyassigned to the Caninae.The record is discontinuous above this single Orellan occurrence but resumes in the early andmedial Arikareean of northern regions of the United States where the appearance of taxa gives evidenceof unrecorded cladogenesis in the early Oligocene. Keine wog über 2 kg. Leptocyon gilt alsälteste Gattung der Caninae, zu der alle heutigen Hunde zählen. Die Gattungentstand im Oligozän vor etwa 34 Millionen Jahren und existierte über einenlangen Zeitraum, bis sie vor etwa 9 Millionen Jahren im Miozän ausstarb." 583In der englischen Ausgabe des Artikels werden wir hingegen zum Gewicht vonLeptocyon wie folgt informiert:Two specimens were examined by Legendre and Roth.
