286Die schon oben zitierte Aussage von Wang und Tedford (2008/2010, pp.119/120: "In the late Eocene (40 ma), the first unambiguous canid,Prohesperocyon appeared in southwestern Texas […] Übrigens bemerkt Wangselbst in seiner Originalabeit zur zeitlichen Einordnung von Prohesperocyon(1994, p. 170):"The temporal ranges of most hesperocyonines are in approximate correspondence with their phylogenies -a further testimony of the reasonably good geologic records of fossil canids. Prohesperocyon wilsoni andCynodesmus thooides are the only exceptions to this correspondence in that their phylogenetic positionsare inconsistent with their order of first appearance (relative to that of Hesperocyon and Mesocyon, respectively).”Zurück zu Lyras (2009). Zur Beschreibung des Gehirns von Prohesperocyonlesen wir auf der Seite 27 (man beachte bitte die Betonung auf "transitional form"– und der Gradualismus postuliert nicht nur eine, sondern Tausende davon – auchhier im Zusammenhang mit der postulierten Evolution der Canidae):"Prohesperocyon, which is the transitional form between the Miacidae and the Canidae, has a brain withpear-shaped cerebral hemispheres and undeveloped temporal and frontal lobes. Its cortex has only twoneocortical sulci (the coronolateral and suprasylvian). The cerebellum is widely exposed and has a straightcerebellar vermis and small cerebellar hemispheres. Of similar morphology is the brain of the firsthesperocyonine, Hesperocyon. In der EMENDEDDIAGNOSIS werden wir zur Bezahnung von Prohesperocyon wie folgt informiert(p. 19):"Prohesperocyon wilsoni possesses a typical canid basicranial and dental pattern distinct from themiacids: presence of a fully ossified and inflated entotympanic bulla (char. 8), laterally positioned internalcarotid artery outside the entotympanic bulla (char. 11), medial expansion of petrosal in full contact withthe basioccipital and basisphenoid (char. 12), presence of posterior accessory cusps on upper and lowerthird premolars (char. 30), reduction of anterior segment of internal cingulum on M1, reduction of M1parastyle and loss of a notch between the parastyle and paracone (char. 35), and absence of a M3 (char.42) (see diagnosis of Canidae).”Nach dem detailliert begründeten Hinweis, dass Prohesperocyon "a typical canidbasicranial and dental pattern distinct from miacids" aufzuweisen hatte, folgt dieAufzählung von sogenannten "primitive characters”:
287"It can be distinguished from Hesperocyon by many primitive characters: lack of a low septum inside thebulla; ….”Auf der Seite 157 lesen wir jedoch: "…the septum seems to be absent inProhesperocyon (Wang and Tedford, 1994)." The lack of a low septum in "H." wilsoni, however, is interesting, with its two alternative implications:nonpreservation (lack of ossification) of a septum in "H." wilsoni, or acquisition of a septum beginning inH. gregarius. The first possibility cannot be ruled out until more and better preserved bullae arefound.”Ganz überzeugend ist also diese Einordnung des Septums ("low septum") nicht. No M3 is present, although thepresent sample (one) is obviously too small to exclude the possibility of itspresence in some individuals since occasional specimens of H. gregarius retainit.” Nicht ganz uninteressant ist für mich, dass der Autor die Unvollständigkeit desFundmaterials an der Stelle hervorhebt, an der Prohesperocyon weiter entwickelt(weniger "primitive") wäre als Hesperocyon, da solche Merkmale offenbar schlechtzu seiner evolutionstheoretischen Behauptung von Prohesperocyon als"transitional form" passen (Prohesperocyon "offers a good example of atransitional form still retaining some primitive features…" – p. 165). Wang führt die Aufzählung der "primitive characters" wie folgt fort – manbeachte bitte, dass der Vergleich sich hier zunächst auf Hesperocyon konzentriert,Miacis folgt wenig später (wieder Wang 1994, p. 19):"…a large, anteriorly located protocone of P4; a welldeveloped parastyle of M1; a narrow and poorlydeveloped internal cingulum of M1; a short trigonid shearing blade of m1; a narrow talonid of m1 relativeto trigonid; a poorly developed entoconid crest; and a more posteriorly reclined coronoid process.”Nach Durchsicht der weiteren Behauptungen Wangs zu Prohesperocyon (vor allemp.
