286Die schon oben zitierte Aussage von Wang und Tedford (2008/2010, pp.119/120: "In the late Eocene (40 ma), the first unambiguous canid,Prohesperocyon appeared in southwestern Texas […] Prohesperocyon'simmediate descendant, Hesperocyon, appeared very soon thereafter in thenorthern Great Plains and Canada.”) ist also nach dem gegenwärtigen Stand derDinge in zwei entscheidenen Punkten völlig unzutreffend: Prohesperocyonerscheint später als Hesperocyon – für die Ableitung folglich nicht relevant, es seidenn, dass nach der Evolutionstheorie die Kinder die Vorfahren der Eltern seinkönnen – und selbst wenn Prohesperocyon früher als Hesperocyon auftretenwürde, so wäre diese Gattung aufgrund der Autapomorphien dennoch nicht derVorfahr von Hesperocyon und der Canidae überhaupt. Übrigens bemerkt Wangselbst in seiner Originalabeit zur zeitlichen Einordnung von Prohesperocyon(1994, p. 170):"The temporal ranges of most hesperocyonines are in approximate correspondence with their phylogenies -a further testimony of the reasonably good geologic records of fossil canids. Prohesperocyon wilsoni andCynodesmus thooides are the only exceptions to this correspondence in that their phylogenetic positionsare inconsistent with their order of first appearance (relative to that of Hesperocyon and Mesocyon,respectively).”Zurück zu Lyras (2009). Zur Beschreibung des Gehirns von Prohesperocyonlesen wir auf der Seite 27 (man beachte bitte die Betonung auf "transitional form"– und der Gradualismus postuliert nicht nur eine, sondern Tausende davon – auchhier im Zusammenhang mit der postulierten Evolution der Canidae):"Prohesperocyon, which is the transitional form between the Miacidae and the Canidae, has a brain withpear-shaped cerebral hemispheres and undeveloped temporal and frontal lobes. Its cortex has only twoneocortical sulci (the coronolateral and suprasylvian). The cerebellum is widely exposed and has a straightcerebellar vermis and small cerebellar hemispheres. Of similar morphology is the brain of the firsthesperocyonine, Hesperocyon. The major difference between the brains of the two genera is that the brainof Hesperocyon is more globular, something that is related to differences in cranial proportions.”Die wiederholte Betonung (4mal in dem Beitrag), dass Prohesperocyon eine"transitional form" zwischen Miacidae und Canidae sei, wird für das Gehirn nichtdurch Fakten belegt – ganz Gegenteil, die Ähnlichkeit mit Hesperocyon wirdmehrmals betont – und die oben zitierte Behauptung, dass die Bezahnung"similarities to Miacis und Procynodictis" zeige, wird in der Arbeit von Lyras nichtbegründet.Schauen wir also in der Originalarbeit von Wang (1994) nach. In der EMENDEDDIAGNOSIS werden wir zur Bezahnung von Prohesperocyon wie folgt informiert(p. 19):"Prohesperocyon wilsoni possesses a typical canid basicranial and dental pattern distinct from themiacids: presence of a fully ossified and inflated entotympanic bulla (char. 8), laterally positioned internalcarotid artery outside the entotympanic bulla (char. 11), medial expansion of petrosal in full contact withthe basioccipital and basisphenoid (char. 12), presence of posterior accessory cusps on upper and lowerthird premolars (char. 30), reduction of anterior segment of internal cingulum on M1, reduction of M1parastyle and loss of a notch between the parastyle and paracone (char. 35), and absence of a M3 (char.42) (see diagnosis of Canidae).”Nach dem detailliert begründeten Hinweis, dass Prohesperocyon "a typical canidbasicranial and dental pattern distinct from miacids" aufzuweisen hatte, folgt dieAufzählung von sogenannten "primitive characters”:
