4.5.3.2 Anaerobic methods
In regard to the anaerobic treatment of wastewater and waste from the meat production,
a large number of reports is available, both from industrial plants home and abroad and
from numerous laboratory and semi-technical tests. The following methods have as yet
been used:
- Contact method (anaerobic activation method with sludge recirculation)
- Fully mixed digesters without sludge recirculation (CSTR)
- Anaerobic Filters
- UASB systems
- Periodically fed sludge bed reactor
Description
Anaerobic pretreatment using down-flow or up-flow reactors
Passing waste water from slaughterhouses or rendering plants over fixed bed reactors
supporting anaerobic micro-organisms on plastic rings or balls or on sintered glass, can
be used as a pretreatment to reduce the COD in waste water. One technique operates as
either as a down-flow or up-flow operation, incorporating recirculation. Biogas is pro-
