For smaller effluent volumes, the specialised industry offers standard fat separators in a
prefabricated format.
During the construction of fat separators it must, amongst others, be ensured that it is
easy to skim off the ascending fat. In the case of large fat separators, both surface and
floor de-sludgers must be installed.
As a principle, the temperature of the in-flowing effluent may not exceed 30 °C.
The resultant fat can either be channelled directly into anaerobic treatment or compost-
ing.

4.5.2.4 Floatation-plants
Floatation plants serve to improve the fat and solids separation, and thus lead to a re-
duction of the pollutant loads. They are installed after the coarse substance catcher and
the sand catcher. Their effect can be boosted by the addition of precipitation and floccula-
tion agents.
As the principle of floatation plants is the floating of the solid particles by the accumula-
tion of micro-bubbles, the methods are subdivided according to how the gas bubbles are
produced:
- pressure relaxation floatation (full stream, part-stream, recycling method)
- dispersion floatation
- mechanical floatation
