Depending on the respective conditions, the anaerobic treatment in a on-site digester
plant can effectively be used for the production of fermentation gas, as well as for the sta-
bilisation of the stomach and bowel contents, the shed discharges, and other highly con-
centrated parts of the wastewater.
Analyses on the co-fermentation of the stomach contents from pigs in a municipal di-
gester show that this is a further disposal path in regard to the technical feasibility. For the
introduction of such disposal paths, one needs to consider the costs for the increased
operational efforts (operation costs).
4.4.5 Waste from the sheds
The waste from sheds must as much as possible be kept away from the wastewater;
they should be collected in particular manure pits. Another option is to collect the manure
in containers and to convey it away.
Faeces and urine are not produced directly as residue, but are contained in the bedding
material and in the rinsing and washing water.
4.4.6 Slaughter waste, slaughtering by-products, unfit meat, and metal parts
Slaughter waste (for instance hide, bristles, hairs) and slaughtering by-products (such as
bowels, bowel parts, and other intestines) must by all means be kept away from the sew-
age system. The same applies to unfit meat and metal parts. All of this waste must be
collected in containers or silos, and delivered to carcass disposal plants, bone utilisation
plants, of gelatine factories, depending on how they are to be processed. In order to avoid
putrefaction and the occurrence of noxious odours, it is necessary to go for cool storage
and quick disposal of this waste, particularly during the summer months.
4.4.7 Waste from poultry slaughtering
The feathers, heads, and feet produced during the slaughtering of poultry (100 g/hen,
125 g/duck and 340 g/goose) must be retained and removed to the respective utilisation
companies (such as bed-feather factories or carcass disposal plants This procedure has
long been common in poultry slaughterhouses. Furthermore, it should be required that the
inedible intestines and the slaughtering blood is kept away from the wastewater. The in-
edible intestines can be sucked off, collected and conveyed to a precious substance re-
covery plant.
