Larger binary ice systems in particular exhibit the following advantages in relation to
conventional direct evaporator or brine systems:
High refrigeration capacity through the exploitation of melting enthalpy
Smaller line diameters and/or significantly lower energy consumption for the circulation
pumps than for brine or glycol installations
Through the appropriate selection of reservoir size, low tariff night time electricity [?] can
be utilised
Higher security through the availability of refrigeration through ice storage
Utilisation of any desired refrigerant (e.g. propane, ammonia) or only water
Significantly lower filling quantities of refrigerant in comparison to direct evaporator sys-
tems
Better heat transmission in the heat exchangers [?]
Complete contact with products to be refrigerated during immersion cooling
Capability of chilling down to exactly 0°C without under-refrigerating the product
Soft ice texture. Hence no damage to products during immersion cooling or abrasion in
pumps or pipes Heat exchangers
During demand for the increased refrigeration output of existing installations, the electri-
cal installation and supply network need not be extended, since refrigeration production
can be expanded to 24 hrs
The maximum reference refrigeration output is many times higher than the average re-
frigeration production output of all currently familiar ice storage systems.
Uncomplicated implementation of ice reservoirs
Higher moisture in supermarket food refrigeration cabinets: Humidifying can be dis-
pensed with, hence better product quality
In the case of "plus range refrigeration" in a supermarket the defrosting heaters of food
refrigeration cabinets can be dispensed with, bringing about lower energy consumption.
When switching to a binary ice system, the existing food refrigeration cabinets of a su-
permarket can continue to be used (without modification)
Through the refrigeration energy stored in the system, peak demand and
Short power interruptions can be bridged without any negative effects
DISADVANTAGES OF BINARY ICE
Disadvantages in comparison to direct evaporation systems:
