tional refrigeration plant 4 (small refrigerant charge, preferably with a natural refriger-
ant) is connected to the Binary Ice icegenerator 1. A secondary pump 5 supplies Bi-
nary Ice at a given ice concentration into the main feed pipe 6 where pumps 7 (op-
tional) supply Binary Ice to the cooling loads 8. In the case of "zero load" but in stand-
by condition the Binary Ice is kept circulating in the secondary loop (6 and 10) but is
passed over valve 9 which opens as soon as the cooling loads are disengaged. The
return pipe 10 transports the Binary Ice fluid, (with or without ice crystals) back to the
storage vessel 3.
Achieved Environmental Benefits
Binary Ice installations yield environmental benefits in energy demand, amount
and quality of matarials employed and emission reduction:
a) Energy: Under comparable conditions the COP of the Binary Ice machine is nor-
mally better for applications of industrial and commercial refrigeration than for con-
ventional chilling and freezing plants, i.e. less energy is used to produce cold en-
ergy.
b) Materials: Due to the storage capability it is possible to design smaller refrigeration
plants. needing less material.
Not only is the material demand lower, but the quality of the material can also be
simpler and therefore better suited for recycling, avoiding compound materials in
