4.1.11.1 Binary Ice as Cooling Fluid (Secondary Refrigerant)
Description
Binary Ice is a "liquid ice" in the form of a suspension of minute ice crystals ( not granu-
lated ice!) in an aqueous solution or mixture. This solution or mixture contains a freezing
point depressing substance, which enables the simultaneous presence of ice crystals
(consisting of pure water) and fluid.
The size of the ice crystals is between 1/100 and 1/10 mm (10 – 100 microns). These
crystals have no abrasive effect on pipes or valves The freezing point depressing sub-
stance used for closed systems is an ethanol based and corrosion protected liquid TALIN
(certified for use in the food industry), and for open systems common NaCl is suitable for
immersion of fish or packed food.
There are presently two different technologies available to produce Binary Ice:
1. Binary Ice is generated with a special evaporator (icegenerator) 1 which is sup-
plied with unfrozen fluid by a pump 2 from a Binary Ice storage vessel 3. A conven-
