Visitors of the Schlossberg (”Castle Hill”)
in Chemnitz are welcomed by an impressive
complex of restored buildings featuring
numerous architectural gems. A special
attraction is the late Gothic gable facing
the city, the side choir of the former
church of the monastery and the lapidary,
which was built in 1995 as a modern glass
pavilion housing a permanent exhibition
of valuable stone sculptures from municipal
cemeteries and town houses. Castle
Hill is the best place to experience the history
of the town. After all, here are the
origins of the first settlement of the town
in the 12th century. The Middle Ages and
modern times, past and present are united
under one roof. The interior of the building
surprises its visitors with its attractive
castle and monastery halls, a cloister with
a Gothic cross vault, figured consoles and
magnificent closing stones documenting
Saxon architecture and sculpturing bet-
ween the 12th and 16th centuries. At present,
the house opens daily with exhibitions
and events. The programme is completed
by meetings and presentations.
Visitors also enjoy the famous concerts in
the small Renaissance hall. When the weather
is nice, these concerts take place in
the inner courtyard. The museum’s latest
scientific project is the exhibition on the
history of the city of Chemnitz, which provides
a comprehensive overview of the
development of the city from its origins to
the present day. The offer is completed by
various special exhibitions on a national
scale and by the municipal collection ”Ancient
Art” showcasing sacred paintings
and sculptures from the Gothic, Renaissance
and Baroque periods. On the foot
of the hill are the oldest houses of the
town as well as Castle Lake, a favourite
destination for recreation with boat hire
and a splendid park.
