The New Museum Of Industrial History
In its new permanent show, the new Museum
of Industrial History does not present
technology for its own sake. It rather focuses
on the people involved in the process
of the industrial development in Saxony
and in contemporary industrial society.
A tour of the exhibitions tells many stories
spanning over 200 years of industrial history
in Saxony. The main focus are the people
from Saxony and their industrial
achievements, people and teams that invented,
designed, produced, bought and
applied technical products in this region.
Each of the eight areas of interest is structured
by leading items. The themes of the
areas are: People from Saxony – Entrepreneurs
– Families – Workers – People from
Karl-Marx-Stadt – Creative Minds – Consumers
– Europeans. The individual areas
have a typological-exemplary structure.
Only the section “People from Karl-Marx-
Stadt” illuminates a relatively short period
of time as it portrays the micro cosmos of
the city in the former GDR. Whenever possible,
the exhibition showcases original
objects. Visitors have a free view of these
originals, inhibited neither by large text displays
nor oversized photographs.
Additional multimedia-terminals provide detailed
information in every area of the exhibition
as well as in the entrance area. The
highlight of the museum complex is the machine
house, which has been restored to its
original style. The coffered ceiling, the terrazzo
floor, the wall tiles and two graffito
murals create the impression of living in the
past century. This impression is reinforced
by a steam engine from the company Germania
in Chemnitz, which is more than 100
years old and going at full steam here again.
Glancing at the outer premises, visitors can
admire a tower crane and even take a ride
in the driver’s cabin of a historic steam accumulator
locomotive.
Chemnitzer Museen
History
Following an initiative of the sponsoring
organisation for the Museum of Industrial
History Chemnitz, the city council meeting
decided to establish a Museum of Industrial
History in 1991. Until the beginning of
November 2002, industrial culture from
past and present was exhibited in a historical
factory building in Annaberger Strasse.
The exhibits, mainly from Chemnitz and its
environs, documented the region’s achievements
in the textile industry, the machine
and vehicle industry as well as in office
equipment technology.
