Die Wahrnehmung jüdischer Gelehrter<br />
oszilliert im christlichen Mittelalter<br />
zwischen Extremen: Den einen galten<br />
gelehrte Juden als wahre Instanzen der<br />
Weisheit, andere betrachteten sie als<br />
Schwarzmagier <strong>und</strong> Teufelsdiener.<br />
Die Mediävistin Simone Haeberli untersucht,<br />
wie <strong>und</strong> aus welchem Anlass sich<br />
Kleriker über jüdische Gelehrte äußerten,<br />
um sich anschließend Figuren jüdischer<br />
Gelehrsamkeit in der fiktionalen Literatur<br />
des Mittelalters zuzuwenden. Vor dem<br />
Hintergr<strong>und</strong> der sozialen Umbrüche des<br />
Spätmittelalters kann sie zeigen, dass die<br />
christliche Bewertung jüdischer Gelehrsamkeit<br />
jeweils eng mit der ökonomischen<br />
Bedeutung der Juden in der mittelalterlichen<br />
Gesellschaft verknüpft war.<br />

Kleider waren in der Sichtweise mittelalterlicher<br />
Betrachter weit mehr als bloße<br />
Hüllen aus Wolle, Pelz <strong>und</strong> Leinwand. Vor<br />
aller Augen identifizierte das Gewand seinen<br />
Träger als Teil eines gemeinschaftlichen<br />
Ganzen <strong>und</strong> machte ihn zugleich<br />
von anderen unterscheidbar. Auf diese<br />
Weise ließ sich nicht nur soziale Ordnung<br />
sichtbar machen, sondern auch individuelle<br />
Zuordnung ausdrücken. Doch wie viel<br />
Raum ließ die Gesellschaft des Mittelalters<br />
bei der Wahl des Gewandes? Wie eng<br />
geschnürt war das Korsett der Kleiderkonventionen?<br />
Konnte vor dem Hintergr<strong>und</strong><br />
vermeintlich statisch verfügter<br />
Identitäten die Kleiderfrage überhaupt<br />
zum Problem werden? Die Studie thematisiert<br />
die Spielräume mittelalterlicher<br />
Kleiderwahl im Spannungsfeld von gesellschaftlicher<br />
Norm <strong>und</strong> subjektiver<br />
Verortung.<br />

Im Lauf des 12. Jahrh<strong>und</strong>erts hat das<br />
Lehnswesen seinen Charakter f<strong>und</strong>amental<br />
verändert: Ein lockeres Bündel von<br />
Rechtsgewohnheiten entwickelte sich zu<br />
einem komplexen Ordnungssystem. Der<br />
Band untersucht diesen Prozess erstmals<br />
auf breiter empirischer Gr<strong>und</strong>lage für das<br />
Heilige Römische Reich im Hochmittelalter.<br />
Die einzelnen Beiträge hinterfragen<br />
die Konstrukte der Historiker zum Lehnswesen,<br />
analysieren Urk<strong>und</strong>en <strong>und</strong> andere<br />
Quellengruppen aus dem Raum zwischen<br />
Nordsee <strong>und</strong> Mittelmeer <strong>und</strong> fragen<br />
danach, inwieweit gesellschaftliche<br />
Phänomene <strong>und</strong> politische Ereignisse mit<br />
dem herkömmlichen Modell vom Lehnswesen<br />
adäquat erfasst werden können.<br />
In der Summe ergibt sich eine neue Sicht<br />
auf einen epochalen Wandel in der mittelalterlichen<br />
Herrschafts-organisation.<br />
