FAZ, Leitartikel vom 8. Juli 2007: Formen des Nichtwissens: …Auf der ganzen Welt gibt es
vielleicht einige hundert Astronomen und Mathematiker, die nachprüfen können, was an Caldwells Berechnungen
dran ist. Und immer öfter müssen sie zu unerklärlichen Phänomenen Zuflucht nehmen, um ihre kühnen
Theoriegebäude zu stützen. Die Namen, die sie diesen Phänomenen geben - "Dunkle Materie", "dunkle Energie",
"Schwarze Löcher" -, sagen deutlich: Hier tappt die Wissenschaft im Dunkeln.
Nicht anders ist es in der Quantenphysik, die zwar so eindrucksvolle technische Errungenschaften wie Laser und
Computerchips ermöglicht hat, deren Theorien aber längst die Grenze zur Metaphysik überschritten haben. Die
"Teilchen", von denen da die Rede ist, haben nichts mehr mit Materie zu tun. Schon für Max Planck war Geist der
"Urgrund aller Materie". Die String-Theoretiker von heute träten auf wie "die Heiligen der letzten Tage der
Physik", hieß es vor einiger Zeit im "Spiegel". Edward Witten, ihr wichtigster Exponent, entwickelte die "M
Superstring-Theorie". Das "M" stehe, wie er verriet, für Magie, Matrix oder Mysterium - wie man wolle.
Und ein kleiner Sprung in die Geschichte:
Isaac Newton (nach wie vor regelmäßig auf Platz 1 der größten
Naturwissenschaftler der Welt) an Richard Bentley (25 February 1693, Datum gemäß
R. Westfall) zur Gravitation:
"It is unconceivable that inanimate brute matter should (without the mediation of something else which is not
material) operate upon and affect other matter without mutual contact; as it must if gravitation in the sense of
Epicurus be essential and inherent in it. And this is one reason why I desired you would not ascribe innate gravity
to me. That gravity should be innate inherent and essential to matter so that one body may act upon another at a
distance through a vacuum without the mediation of any thing else by and through which their action or force may
be conveyed from one to another is to me so great an absurdity that I believe no man who has in philosophical
matters any competent faculty of thinking can ever fall into it. Gravity must be caused by an agent acting
constantly according to certain laws, but whether this agent be material or immaterial is a question I have left to
the consideration of my readers.”
