The work of the TC isn’t that simple,and viewers know all the athletes – not only the ones fromBelarus, but the German ones, the Norwegians, the Russians,the Austrians, etc. as well.”The popularity is in Popov’s view reason enough for onechange he recommends for Biathlon in the years to come.“Now Biathlon has to come across to Eastern Europe, evenover to Belarus, or to somewhere nearby at somestage. Biathlon’s really popular over there and loadsof spectators would go to the competitions.”On the whole, Popov believes Biathlon has a brightfuture, and when asked where Biathlon is headed inthe future, he replies as quick as lightning, “It’s onlygoing up!” •as time never slows down and you have to work hard tokeep Biathlon interesting. [Being on the TC] is also an honourfor me, and I learn a lot of new things, things that makeme useful to Biathlon.”Popov’s attitude towards Biathlon has not been changedby his new role, since “coaches who train Biathlon teamsalso see the internal problems within the sport. Biathlon isalso good for the very reason that almost all the coachescommunicate well with each other and help each other out.They all want Biathlon to stay popular.“One reason for Biathlon’s popularity in Popov’s opinionis the big spread of top-performing athletes. “It’s the bestsport in the world. It’s always interesting, and lots of athleteshave got the chance to end up in first place. There’salways someone new at the top, and lots of athletes getshown on TV. Aside from that, there’s a real challenge inshooting, a sport that requires calm, and skiing, which isdynamic, and in being good at both. That’s what’s interestingabout it – that’s what makes Biathlon the best sport.That’s why it’s continually becoming more popular. I knowthat it’s growing in popularity in Belarus. Medaillengewinner hat er bereitshervorgebracht.Alexander Popov, der von Freunden liebevoll Saschagenannt wird, denkt sehr gerne an Kanada, schließlicherlebte er dort den größten Triumph seiner Karriere.Bei den Olympischen Winterspielen 1988 in dem nordamerikanischenLand nahm er zum ersten Mal an Olympischen Spielenteil, damals noch für die UdSSR, und gewann nach einer emotionalenAchterbahnfahrt mit der Staffel Gold. Bei den letztenSpielen gewann sein Schützling Sergey Novikov eine Silbermedailleim Einzel, zeitgleich mit Norwegens Ole Einar Bjoerndalen.Er erinnert sich: „Mein Lieblingswettkampf war bei den erstenOlympischen Spielen in Calgary. Als junger Sportler istman bei den Olympischen Spielen immer aufgeregt. Man hatso viele Emotionen, alles ist interessant und gleichzeitig auchstressig. Ich habe bei der Qualifikation in der UdSSR den erstenPlatz belegt, aber ich war wohl zu aufgeregt und habe beimEinzel nicht gut abgeschnitten und bin dadurch nicht im Sprintgestartet. Dann bin ich aber mit der Staffel gestartet und habeden ersten Platz geholt.“Nun kehrte Popov im Februar wieder nach Kanada zurück,dieses Mal in der Rolle als Trainer der Weißrussischen Nationalmannschaft.Er trug die Verantwortung für das Herrenteamund hatte ein klares Ziel für die Olympischen Winterspiele inVancouver: „Jeder Trainer und jeder Athlet gibt sich Mühe, die72 biathlonworld The official Magazine of the IBU 20 I 2010
