Explorations in Intercultural Theology
edited by Prof. Dr. Volker Küster (Kampen)
Volker Küster (Ed.)
Reshaping Protestantism in a Global Context
The regional contributions from Africa and Asia show how the old European made denominational differences fade in the
light of African Instituted Churches or Pentecostalism. Reshaping Protestantism is not a backward oriented project of reconstructing
the original but makes use of the inner protestant pluralism to cope with globalization and changing religious
landscapes. Who reads through the different articles can only come to the conclusion: Yes, there is a contribution to be
expected from mainline Protestantism in all its variety.
Islam in the Netherlands
Between Religious Studies and Interreligious Dialogue. In honour of Harry Mintjes
Suspicion and clashes accompany the settlement of Muslims in European cultures. This book explores a case in point:
Muslims in the Netherlands. Both Muslim and non-Muslim authors contribute to the debate about the future of Islam in
this new context. Contributions range from the position of Muslim women in debates about the headscarf to the attempts
by Muslims to set up a viable academic training centre for imams. To allow cross-cultural comparissions the volume also
contains reflections from other parts of Europe.
Visual Arts and Religion
Images have caused uproar, violence and even casualties in the meeting of religions and cultures during the last years.
Iconoclasm and iconolatry are on the agenda once more. Late Modern Culture is dominated by images and is understood
in concepts such as aestheticization and symbolisation. Theological debate is likewise performed through images, symbols
and rituals rather than through doctrines and beliefs. The authors from various research backgrounds seek to clarify
the terms of reference, and explore the diversity and disagreements in their use from a Christian perspective.
Treasure in Earthen Vessels
Intercultural Perspectives on Pastoral Care facing Fragility and Destruction
The proceedings of the World Congress of the International Council on Pastoral Care and Counseling (ICPCC) in Kryzowa
(2007) met on the theme “Treasure in Earthen Vessels”, offering a good overview of the current trends in the field.
Christian and Jewish authors from different countries addressed the intercultural and interreligious dimensions of the
subject. Central to this book is a fresh theological approach to pastoral care and counseling from the perspective of eschatology.
Interpretative Identity and Hermeneutical Community
A Biblical Hermeneutics for Women’s Group Bible Study in the Korean Context
In this study Mi-Rang Kang (*1969 in Seoul) investigates the role of women in Korean church life and society and shows
possibilities for their empowerment. By transposing Paul Ricoeurs hermeneutics into her own context, she wants to
contribute to the formation of Korean Christian women’s identity. Along the lines of the book of Ruth she develops a
Bible didactical theory for her own church. At the same time the book will also give Western readers an insight into one
of the major Presbyterian denominations in Korea, little known so far.
Bendangjungshi NEU
Confessing Christ in the Naga Context
Towards a Liberating Ecclesiology
Bendangjungshi (*1973) brings into dialogue the three leading Northeast Indian tribal theologians, Renthy Keitzar
(1936 – 2003), K. Thanzauva (* 1946) and Wati Longchar (* 1958) with the Western theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer
(1906 – 1945) who suffered martyrdom under the Nazi dictatorship in Germany. Negotiating between Bonhoeffer’s political
approach and Naga cultural identity, Bendangjungshi develops a liberating ecclesiology for Naga Christians, who
have been suffering under Indian military occupation since the withdrawal of the British colonizers from Nagaland.
