Visions and recommendationsFuture l<strong>in</strong>es of development <strong>in</strong> research with synchrotron radiation and free-electron lasers are based on the follow<strong>in</strong>g visions:1. Improve the understand<strong>in</strong>g of biomolecular structure and dynamics – from s<strong>in</strong>gle molecules to entire cells –for better health and biotechnology2. Develop new materials for the environmental, energy, transportation, and <strong>in</strong>formation technologies3. Follow chemical reactions <strong>in</strong> real time and understand their molecular structure and reaction pr<strong>in</strong>ciples4. Strengthen Germany’s lead<strong>in</strong>g role <strong>in</strong> the development of time resolv<strong>in</strong>g and tunable photon sources, with energiesup to the X-ray range5. Provide optimum <strong>in</strong>strumentation and <strong>in</strong>frastructure to promote outstand<strong>in</strong>g research and to open up new research areasThe realization of these visions needs to take the follow<strong>in</strong>g steps:1. Further development of r<strong>in</strong>g sources• Increase of the capacity of PETRA III• Improvement of the source and beaml<strong>in</strong>es at BESSY II• Implementation of a full-energy <strong>in</strong>jector and extension of <strong>in</strong>strumentation at ANKA• Full support of the upgrade program at ESRF2. Further development of Free-Electron Lasers• Construction of FLASH II• Realisation of the full version of the European XFEL3. Development of X-ray sources for the future• Construction of prototype energy recovery l<strong>in</strong>ac „BERL<strong>in</strong>Pro“ as a foundation for a future user facility4. Required <strong>in</strong>frastructure activities• Provision of optimum sample environment and <strong>in</strong>tegration of on-site equipment for sample preparation andsample characterization5. New development of optical elements and detectors for advanced time- and spatial resolution6. Extension of Verbundforschung as a subject oriented <strong>in</strong>strument for promotion of research• Development of subject oriented platforms of research at German research centers <strong>in</strong> co-operation with users,if necessary at sources abroad7.
