Dear Art Lovers, The Kunsthalle Mannheim is on the cusp of
a new tomorrow. Over the next four years, a groundbreaking museum
ensemble will evolve in the heart of the city. Experience and actively
take part in this creative process! We will be accompanying the building
competition with exciting discussion forums under the motto
“Kunsthalle für alle. Alle bauen mit”—A Kunsthalle for everyone. Everyone
makes a contribution—presenting you with designs by around
thirty globally active museum architects. You can furthermore expect
a broad range of activities within the scope of an exhibition and event
program between the poles of the classic modern era and contemporary

Kunst zu lieben und zu sammeln hat in der Neckarmetropole
Tradition! Die Ausstellung präsentiert 160 Gemälde, Skulpturen,
Objekte und Fotografien von Museumsqualität aus 17
ano nymen Mannheimer Privatsammlungen. In Korrespondenz zur
Sammlung der Kunsthalle entfaltet sich ein spannender Parcours
durch die Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts bis in die Gegenwart:
von Jugendstil und Expressionismus über Informel und
Nouveau Réalisme bis zu jungen zeitgenössischen Positionen. Dabei
überraschen faszinierende Einblicke in die Privatsphäre sehr
verschiedener Sammlerpersönlichkeiten, die eines eint: Leidenschaft
für die Kunst.

In the Neckar metropolis, loving and collecting art has a long
tradition! The exhibition presents 160 paintings, sculptures, objects,
and photographs of museum quality from 17 anonymous Mannheimbased
private collections. In conjunction with the Kunsthalle’s
collection, an exciting journey unfolds through the art history of the
20th century to the present: from Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Art
Informel, and Neorealism to young contemporary stances. You will be
surprised by fascinating insights into the private sphere of very different
collector personalities who all share one thing: a passion for art.

Nasan Turs (* 1974) Skulpturen und Videoarbeiten, Aktionen
und Installationen gehen unmittelbar vom alltäglichen Leben
aus. Der Künstler hinterfragt mit seinen Werken die Realität auf
humorvolle Weise. Exklusiv für Premiere_2 entstand Breaking
Records: In der 10-Kanal-Videoinstallation versucht der Künstler
unter höchstem körperlichen Einsatz, Weltrekorde im Eier-Balancieren,
Luft-Anhalten, Schreien oder Strohhalm-in-den-Mundstecken
zu brechen. Natürlich muss er dabei scheitern − und wir
halten den Atem an! Premiere ist eine flexible Plattform für aktuelle
Entwicklungen der Gegenwartskunst, die jeweils neue Arbeiten
zur Diskussion stellt.
The sculptures and videos, actions and installations by Nasan
Tur (*1974) start out directly from everyday life. The artist’s works
scrutinize reality in a humorous way. Breaking Records was developed
specifically for Premiere_2: in his ten­channel video installation,
under a tremendous amount of physical effort the artist attempts to
break world records in balancing eggs, holding his breath, screaming,
or sticking straws into his mouth. Naturally, he has to fail in the process—and
we all hold our breath! Premiere is a flexible platform for
current developments in contemporary art, each of which opens up
new works for discussion.

Die Schweizerin Pipilotti Rist zählt weltweit zu den bekann
testen zeitgenössischen Videokünstlerinnen. Seit den
1980er Jahren schafft sie Videoprojektionen, Skulpturen und Installationen,
die durch ihre kreative filmische Ausdruckskraft
begeistern. In rauschhaften, farbintensiven Bilderfluten werden
Themen wie Körperlichkeit und Identität umkreist. Die Kunsthalle
Mannheim präsentiert eine umfassende Retrospektive mit
30 Videoarbeiten, Skulpturen und raumgreifenden Installationen
aus 25 Jahren. Ein Highlight ist die neue Arbeit Administrating
Eternity – eine überwältigende visuelle Landschaft.

Swiss Pipilotti Rist is one of the most well­known contemporary
video artists worldwide. She has been producing video projections,
sculptures, and installations since the 1980s whose creative power of
filmic expression delights viewers. Themes such as physicality and
identity are revolved around in ecstatic, intensely colorful surges of
images. The Kunsthalle Mannheim is presenting an extensive retrospective
comprising thirty videos, sculptures, and space­consuming
installations from twenty­five years. One highlight is the new work
Administrating Eternity—an overwhelming visual landscape.
Exhibition organized by the Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre London, in association
with Kunsthalle Mannheim.

Alle drei Jahre vergeben die Kunsthalle Mannheim und die
H.W. & J. Hector Stiftung zwei bedeutende Preise für Bild hauerei,
Objektkunst und Rauminstallation. Der Hector Förderpreis ist für
junge KünstlerInnen im deutschsprachigen Raum bestimmt. Mit
dem Hector Kunstpreis wird ein bereits inter na tio nal anerkannter
Künstler geehrt. Neben den Parallelpräsenta tio nen der beiden
Preisträger stellen sich ausgewählte Förderpreiskandidaten vor.
Juroren waren unter anderem Biennale-Kura torin Susanne Gaensheimer,
Yilmaz Dziewior, Direktor Kunst haus Bregenz, und der
Hector Kunstpreisträger 2009: Tobias Reh berger.
Every three years, the Kunsthalle Mannheim and the H.W. &
J. Hector Stiftung award two important prizes for sculpture, object art,
and spatial installation. The Hector Förderpreis is an advancement
award for young artists in the German­speaking world. The Hector
Kunstpreis is an art prize that honors artists who have already gained
international recognition. Selected achievement award candidates will
introduce themselves alongside the presentation of the two prizewinners.
The jury comprises, among others, Susanne Gaensheim, curator
of the Biennale, Yilmaz Dziewior, director of the Kunsthaus Bregenz,
and Tobias Rehberger, the 2009 recipient of the Hector Art Prize.

Aktuelle Kunst im Rhein-Neckar-Delta sowie im Radius
von Karlsruhe und Heidelberg bis Kaiserslautern und Mainz steht
im Fokus eines neuen Formats der Metropolregion. Dafür schließen
sich erstmals Kunsthalle, Kunstverein und Stadtgalerie Mannheim
zusammen. Im Zweijahresrhythmus, alternierend mit dem
Wilhelm-Hack-Museum und Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, bietet
die jurierte Ausstellung eine Entdeckungsreise in die regionale
Kunst- und Künstlerszene. Bewerben können sich Künstlerinnen

Current art in the Rhein­Neckar Delta as well as within the
radius of Karlsruhe and Heidelberg to Kaiserslautern and Mainz is the
focus of a new format in the metropolis region, with Mannheim’s
Kunsthalle, Kunstverein, and Stadtgalerie joining forces for the first
time. Every two years, alternating with the Wilhelm­Hack­Museum
and the Kunstverein Ludwigshafen, the juried exhibition provides an
opportunity for setting out on a journey of discovery into the regional

Wimmelnde Menschenmassen, wirbelnde Bildräume, märchenhafte
und alptraumartige Szenerien in Tuschfeder und Aquarellfarben
− bis zum 18. Lebensjahr hat Felix Hartlaub (1913–1945)
ein phantasievolles Zeichnungsoeuvre geschaffen; danach wendet
er sich der Literatur zu. Die Ausstellung würdigt das kurze, aber
intensive Lebenswerk des begabten Sohns von Gustav F. Hart laub,
dem zweiten Kunsthallendirektor. Zugleich wird an den Vater
er innert, der als ein Protagonist der Moderne 1933 − vor genau 80
Jahren − von den Nationalsozialisten aus dem Amt entlassen wurde.

Editorial
Teeming crowds of people, swirling pictorial spaces, fabulous
and nightmare­like scenarios in pen and ink and watercolors—by the
time he was eighteen, Felix Hartlaub (1913–1945) had created a fanciful
oeuvre of drawings. After that, he turned to literature. The exhibition
pays tribute to the short, intense life’s work of the gifted son of
Gustav F. Hartlaub, the second director of the Kunsthalle. At the same
time, his father is remembered, a protagonist of modernism who was
dismissed from his office by the National Socialists in 1933—exactly
eighty years ago.

locken während der Generalsanierung des Jugendstil-Baus in die
Kunsthalle. Auf starken Farben treffen Meisterwerke von Wilhelm

Schreiender Papst oder Capricorne von Max Ernst. Aus Platzmangel
befinden sich jedoch viele Gemälde und Skulpturen der Klassischen
Moderne derzeit im Depot − darunter auch das Mannheimer

During the overall refurbishment of the Art Nouveau building,
selected major works from the Mannheim collection will lure visitors
to the Kunsthalle. Masterpieces by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Fernand Léger,
or Paul Klee encounter Francis Bacon’s The Screaming Pope or
Capricorne by Max Ernst. Due to a shortage of space, however, nume rous
paintings and sculptures from the classic modern era are currently
in storage—including Edouard Manet’s key painting Execu tion
of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. In exchange, our hallmark work
of art, Constantin Brancusi’s Big Fish, greets you directly at the
Friedrichsplatz entrance.

Die qualitativ und quantitativ herausragende Mannheimer
Spezialsammlung moderner Skulptur ist Ausgangspunkt für ein
einzigartiges Ausstellungs- und Wissenschaftsprojekt. Künstlerkurator
Bogomir Ecker und drei internationale Partner − Kiki
Smith, Roman Signer und John Bock − interpretieren und inszenieren
alle dreidimensionalen Werke der Kunsthalle aus der Sicht
zeitgenössischer Bildhauer. Angestrebt sind frische bis freche
Alternativen zu traditionellen Präsentationsformen. Statt Sockel
und Vitrine wird der gesamte Mitzlaff-Bau − kurz vor seinem
Abriss − zum künstlerischen Experimentierfeld für das Thema
Skulptur im Museum.

The Mannheim special collection of modern sculpture, outstanding
both in terms of quality as well as quantity, is the point of
departure for a unique exhibition and scholarly project. Artist­curator
Bogomir Ecker and three international partners—Kiki Smith, Roman
Signer, and John Bock—interpret and stage all of the Kunsthalle’s
three­dimensional works from the point of view of contemporary
sculptors. They strive toward fresh to bold alternatives to traditional
forms of presentation. Instead of plinths and display cases, the entire
Mitzlaff building—shortly before its demolition—becomes an experimental
field for the theme sculpture at the museum.

Der Epochenbegriff Neue Sachlichkeit wurde 1925 in der
Kunsthalle Mannheim geprägt. Zur Wiedereröffnung des Jugendstilbaus
treten hier erstmals die beiden großen deutschen Künstler
Max Beckmann (1884–1950) und Otto Dix (1891–1969) in den
Dia log. Ein neuartiges Verhältnis zur Wirklichkeit zeichnet sie aus.
Dix führt mit seinem kritischen Superrealismus den linken Flügel
der Neuen Sachlichkeit an. Beck mann ent wickelt mit sub jektiver
Symbolik eine transzendentale Sachlichkeit. Persönlich sind sie
sich nie begegnet. Als Künstler treffen sie den magischen
Moment – wenn das Gewohnte plötzlich fremd und Welt zum
Mythos wird.

The epochal term New Objectivity was coined in 1925 at the
Kunsthalle Mannheim. On the occasion of the reopening of the Art
Nouveau building, the two great German artists Max Beckmann
(1884–1950) and Otto Dix (1891–1969) enter into a dialogue for the first
time. They are characterized by a new type of relationship to reality.
With his Super Realism, Dix spearheads the left wing of New Objectivity,
and Beckmann develops a transcendental objectivity with
subjective symbolism. They never met personally. As artists, they
encounter the magic moment—when that which is familiar suddenly
becomes alien, and the world becomes a myth.

Die Kunsthalle steht vor dem entscheidenden Entwicklungsschritt
in ihrer über 100-jährigen Geschichte. Der marode
Erweiterungsbau von 1983 soll einem Neubau weichen, der einen
souveränen Dialog mit dem Friedrichsplatz aufnimmt. Angestrebt
wird ein signifikant urbanistisches Museumsgebäude, das in der
architektonischen und funktionalen Qualität – verbunden mit
einem zukunftsweisenden Energiekonzept – Maßstäbe setzt.
2012 steht im Zeichen des internationalen Architektenwettbewerbs.
Zum Abschluss werden etwa 30 weltweit renommierte Museumsplaner
ihre Entwürfe für die neue Kunsthalle dem Mannheimer
Publikum präsentieren.

The Kunsthalle is at the threshold of a decisive developmental
step in its one­hundred­year history. The ramshackle addition from
1983 will give way to a new building that takes up a sovereign dialogue
with Friedrichsplatz. What is being aimed at is a significantly urbanist
museum building that, together with a forward­looking energy concept,
sets standards in its architectural and functional quality. The
year 2012 stands under the banner of the international architect com ­
petition. At the close of the competition, around thirty internationally
renowned museum planners will present their designs for the new
Kunsthalle to Mannheim’s public.

Vieles gerät bei der Generalsanierung des Jugendstilgebäudes
an der Moltkestraße in Bewegung. Die historische Raum struktur
und die schönen Fassadenskulpturen werden wieder hergestellt.
Lichtdecken aus Glas sind schon jetzt freigelegt, um die
Ursprungsidee vom Tageslichtmuseum zu neuem Leben zu erwecken.
Modernste Anlagen kommen in der Haus-, Klima- und
Sicherheitstechnik zum Einsatz. Das Bundeswirtschaftsministerium
hat die Kunsthalle Mannheim zum Leuchtturm für energetisches
Sanieren gekürt. Bei allen Maßnahmen steht vor allem
eines im Mittelpunkt: Die Bewahrung und hochwertige Präsentation
der Mannheimer Kunstsammlung.

Many things are being set in motion by the overall refurbishment
of the Art Nouveau building in Moltkestrasse. The historical spatial
structure and the beautiful sculptures adorning the façade will be
restored. Luminous ceilings made of glass have already been laid
open in order to revive the original idea of a daylight museum. Modern
equipment will be employed in the area of building, air­conditioning,
and security technology. The Federal Ministry of Economy has selected
the Kunsthalle Mannheim as a lighthouse of energy­efficient redevelopment.
All of the measures being carried out focus above all on one
thing: the preservation of the high quality of the Mannheim art collection.
