cial attention is paid to careful use of the water recourses.
The renewable water resources are generated by precipitation.
This surface water, which is collected in the wadis
and dams, is very important for the country’s water supply
which is why an extensive network of dams was created
in the past to collect the surface water and use it to
the optimum. In addition to providing flood protection,
the dams are also used to refill the groundwater supplies,
the direct drinking water supply and/or for watering the
agricultural fields. By 2006, 230 dams with a storage
capacity of 850 million m 3 had been built. Other dams
are currently under construction or being planned.
For a long time, the groundwater was the main water supply
source. This non-renewable water is a strategic reserve
and must therefore be used very carefully if it is not to be
completely emptied. The groundwater reserves still serve
as the main supply source for the agricultural sector and
the communes.
The Ministry for Water and Electricity is currently drafting
a national water plan. Steps have also been taken to
allow private investments in the fields of water distribution,
waster water treatment and its reuse, and the construction
of water desalination plants.
In recent years, the desalination of seawater has grown
so much that Saudi Arabia is now the world’s greatest
producer of desalinated seawater. There are currently 30
plants in operation that produce 3.4 million cubic metres
a day. By the year 2025, this quantity will have increased
to 10 million cubic metres. It is assumed that this will require
investments of around 23 billion US$. In the shortterm,
the state Saline Water Conversion Corporation
(SWCC) is planning to erect three smaller desalination
plants on the Red Sea coast and a further desalination
plant on the east coast of the country near Al-Khafil.
Similar to the energy sector, the state is hoping for investments
from private investors. The associated supply network
is being continuously expanded. The length of the
supply lines has now reached 4,170 km and the number
of pump stations has grown to 30. More than 50% of the
communal water consumption is currently covered by desalinated
water.
Progress is also being made in the waste water treatment
field, albeit this progress is restricted to the large towns
of Riyadh and Jeddah. In the near future, the waste water
treatment system of the capital will be expanded.
Around 20 billion US$ will need to be invested to develop
and modernise the entire waste water system of the
Kingdom.

Der eisenbahnsektor hat in der jüngeren Vergangenheit
keine große Entwicklung erfahren. Es bestehen zwei
Hauptstrecken, die Dammam an der Ostküste mit der
Hauptstadt Riyadh verbinden. Diese Linien werden zum
Einen für den Frachttransport und zum Anderen für den
Personenverkehr genutzt. Die Saudi Railway Organization
(SRO) hat ein gigantisches Programm zur Erweiterung
des Eisenbahnnetzes in Gang gesetzt, wobei der
private Sektor sowohl am Bau als auch an der Betreibung
der neuen Linien beteiligt werden soll. Alle Großstädte
sollen an das Schienennetz angebunden werden. Geplant
ist als wichtigstes Projekt die Eisenbahnverbindung
von Jeddah über Riyadh nach Dammam (Landbridge
Project) und weiter nach Jubail. Für den Bau und Betrieb
dieser Linie haben sich vier Konsortien saudischer und
internationaler Unternehmen für die Angebotsabgabe
qualifiziert. Neben der Ost-West-Trasse ist eine Nord-
Süd-Trasse von Riyadh an die jordanische Grenze geplant,
die durch eine Verbindung von Hail an den Golf
ergänzt werden soll. Diese Verbindung soll nicht nur die
Erschließung der Bodenschätze in der Region Hail und
den Abtransport der landwirtschaftlichen Produktion
in Al-Jouf ermöglichen, sondern den Anschluss an Jordanien
herstellen.
Nach Abschluss der Nord-Süd-Trasse soll eine weitere
Verbindung von Hail nach Ras Al-Zour geschaffen werden,
die den direkten Transport der Bodenschätze in die
Industriegebiete am Golf ermöglichen soll. Zwei neue
Eisenbahnstrecken sollen Jeddah und Jizan sowie Taif
und Khamis Mushayt verbinden. Die geplante Eisenbahnverbindung
zwischen Mekka und Medina soll den
Bau einer elektrischen Hochgeschwindigkeitsbahn einschließen.
Deutsche Unternehmen sind stark an einer
Beteiligung am Ausbau des saudischen Eisenbahnnetzes
interessiert und haben dies mit der Unterbreitung entsprechender
Angebote bekundet.
Davon ausgehend, dass die bis 2009 geplanten Eisenbahnverbindungen
noch nicht in Betrieb sind, soll die
Anzahl der beförderten Personen um jährlich 4,5% und
der Frachttransport um jährlich 2% steigen. Der Containerverkehr
wird um 6,5% jährlich wachsen.
Die hafeninfrastruktur umfasst acht Großhäfen (ohne
Ölumschlagsausrüstungen) mit 183 Liegeplätzen und
einer Umschlagskapazität von 252 Mio. t pro Jahr. Fünf
