DER KOMPONISTJOHANN JOSEPH FUX (1660–1741)Der führende BarockkomponistÖsterreichsJ. J. Fux, der Bauernsohn aus St. Marein beiGraz, wurde Ende der 70er-Jahre des 17. Jh.svom Pfarrer zum Priesterstudium nach Grazgeschickt. Im Februar 1681 trat er in dasGrazer Ferdinandeum ein, im Türkenjahr1683 wechselte er an die JesuitenuniversitätIngolstadt über. Von Ingolstadt scheint erEnde 1688 mit bislang unbekanntem Zielweggegangen zu sein; für einen Italienaufenthaltgibt es zwar keinerlei Indizien, wohlscheinen aber zwei voneinander unabhängigüberlieferte Hinweise auf einen »UngarischenBischof« durchaus vertrauenswürdig.1696 trat er die Stelle als Organist im WienerSchottenkloster an, und im Herbst 1698 wurdeer zum Hofkomponisten ernannt. 1711wurde er Vizehofkapellmeister, 1715 schließlichHofkapellmeister.Seine Hauptaufgabe am Wiener Hof warneben der Kirchenmusik vor allem die Kompositionvon repräsentativen Opern und Oratorien.Insgesamt hat J. J. Fux über 500 Werkegeschrieben. Drei Kaiser stellten J. J. Fux inihre Dienste. Dies läßt erkennen, daß er alsein führender Musiker seiner Zeit gefragtund anerkannt war.☛INHALT/CONTENTS☛

DIE EDITIONDie derzeit im Erscheinen begriffene Gesamtausgabeumfaßt bislang 31 Bände, diezwar einen repräsentativen Querschnitt bieten,aber bei weitem noch keinen endgültigenÜberblick gewährleisten. Die Edition bezweckt,der Wissenschaft einen einwandfreienText aller Werke von J. J. Fux zu bieten. DieAusgabe erscheint in 8 Serien:I Messen und Requiem;II Litaneien, Vespern, Kompletorien,Te Deum;III Kleinere Kirchenmusikwerke;IV Oratorien;V Opern;VI Instrumentalmusik;VII Theoretische und pädagogischeWerke;VIII Supplement.Innerhalb der Serien werden größere Werkeeinzeln veröffentlicht, kleinere Werke gleicherArt dagegen bandweise zusammengefaßt. Unvollständigerhaltene Werke werden ebensowie die vollständigen zu den einzelnen Seriengestellt. Werke und Bearbeitungen, die mitgroßer Wahrscheinlichkeit unecht sind, findenin dieser Ausgabe keine Aufnahme. THE COMPOSERJOHANN JOSEPH FUX (1660–1741)Austria’s leading Baroque ComposerJ. J. Fux was born the son of a farmer inSt. Marein near Graz. At the end of the 1670she was sent by the village priest to Graz inorder to study to become a priest himself. InFebruary 1681 he entered the Graz Ferdinandeum,transferring to the Jesuit University atIngolstadt in 1683, the year that the Turksbesieged Vienna. He seems to have left Ingolstadtat the end of 1688 for as yet unidentifiedreasons; while there is no evidence of a stayin Italy, there do exist two independent referencesto a “Hungarian bishop”, both ofwhich appear to be completely reliablesources.In 1696 he assumed the position of organistin the Vienna Schottenkloster (“Monastery ofthe Scots”), and in the autumn of 1698 he wasappointed court composer. In 1711 he becamevice-musical director to the court, andfinally, in 1715, musical director.Alongside church music, his chief task atthe Vienna court was the composition ofprestigious operas and oratorios.J. J. Fux wrote over 500 works in total, andserved under three emperors. This is a clearindication of his status and demand as theleading musician of his time.☛INHALT/CONTENTS☛

THE EDITIONThe complete edition currently under publicationincludes 31 volumes to date. Although theseoffer a representative cross section, they cannotby a long way be seen to guarantee a conclusiveoverall picture.The Johann Joseph Fux publication purposesto provide scholars with a faultless text ofJ. J. Fux’s works.
