Hier bietet beispielsweise O2 durch
die Zugehörigkeit zur internationalen Telefónica
Gruppe eine gute Grundlage. Telefónica
zählt mit Netzen in Europa, Afrika und
Lateinamerika zu den Weltmarktführern
unter den Telefongesellschaften. Dank der
weltweit mehr als 330 Roamingabkommen
von O2 mit ausländischen Netzbetreibern
wählen sich die On-Board-Units nahtlos
in die Mobilfunknetze der ausländischen
Anbieter ein.
Und auch in Deutschland wird die Netzabdeckung
weiter ausgebaut. Bis zum Jahr
2010 investiert O2 dort insgesamt 3,5 Milliarden
Euro für den Aufbau von rund 5000
weiteren Mobilfunkantennen. „Viele der
Antennen wurden bereits an Autobahnen,
Bundes- und Landstraßen installiert und
ermöglichen zusammen mit dem bereits
bestehenden Netzwerk einen fast nahtlosen
Empfang im Fahrzeug“, erklärt Matthias
Weber, Senior Product Manager bei
Telefónica O2 Germany.
Transportation companies, such as the
traditional logistic service provider Grieshaber
Logistics Group, use fleet management
systems equipped with the O2
mobile connection to fulfill such promises
to customers as dependability, speed and
delivery reliability more efficiently and cost
effectively.
Only an ongoing and timely communication
between a vehicle fleet and dis patchers
enables timely delivery of goods and supports
transport and logistics processes on
a professional level. Logistic dispatchers
have permanent contact with their fleet
through on-board units – computers with
wireless communication, touch screens
and GPS satellite positioning – which are
installed in the vehicles.
The vehicle and its headquarters can
regularly exchange status reports with help
of the mobile network. The information is
transmitted either to a management portal,
which the dispatcher can operate through a
web site, or it is sent directly to the inventory
control system of the logistics company.
Optimal route calculation for incoming
orders can be processed and executed. Besides
freight positioning, the on-board-unit
sends information pertaining to speed, remaining
time until arrival, temperature,
fuel consumption and order status back

to the headquarters. By these means, the
logistic company increases its access to information
for clients as well as authorities.
International network coverage is vital
for the company in order to ensure cross-
border tracking. O2 offers a good foundation
through their affiliation with the
international Telefónica group. Telefónica
stands as world leader, strengthened by
its networks in Europe, Africa and Latin
America. Thanks to O2’s more than 330
worldwide roaming agreements with foreign
operators, on-board units can seamlessly
dial into mobile networks of foreign
suppliers.
Even in Germany, network coverage is
being expanded. By 2010 O2 will be in-
vesting a total of 3.5 billion Euros for the
construction of approximately 5000 additional
mobile antennas. “Many of the dishes
were already installed on highways,
federal and country roads, allowing, together
with the already existing network,
an almost seamless reception in the vehicle,”
said Matthias Weber, Senior Product
Manager at Telefónica O2 Germany.
