Als Grundlage für die zuverlässige Datenübertragung
entschied sich Bury deshalb
für das GE864-QUAD Automotive-
Modul von Telit Wireless Solutions. Mit
einem geringen Formfaktor von nur 30 x
30 x 2,8 mm und einem ausgedehnten
Temperaturbereich von -40° bis +85°C ist
es als Hardware-Plattform ideal für den
Automobilbereich geeignet. Durch seine
Quad-Band-Fähigkeit kann es in allen
globalen GSM-Netzen reibungslos betrieben
werden. Darüber hinaus unterstützt
das GE864-QUAD Automotive wie alle
Telit-Module auch die Telit Infinita Services,
die sowohl ein Premium FOTA-Management
mit verlängerter Softwaregarantiezeit
als auch einen erweiterten Hardware-
Garantieservice umfassen.
„Was letztlich den Ausschlag dafür gab,
dass wir uns für Telit entschieden haben,
war eine umfassende Servicezusage“,
sagt Lemke. „Im OEM-Bereich gelten
strenge Terminauflagen. Deshalb müssen
wir uns jederzeit auf einen kompetenten
Support verlassen können. Dieses Versprechen
hat Telit voll und ganz gehalten.“
Das BF1150 ist voraussichtlich ab dem vierten
Quartal 2009 verfügbar. Und obwohl
die Telematiksparte Neuland für Bury ist,
ist die Resonanz gut: Die Nachfrage nach
kombinierten Telematiklösungen ist groß
und es gibt bereits potentielle Interessenten.
„Telematik bietet unendlich viele
Möglichkeiten. Deshalb werden wir es
für unsere Produktentwicklung genau im
Auge behalten“ sagt Lemke.
Bury Technologies, located in the east
westphalian city of Löhne, is a manufacturer
and OEM supplier of hands-free
devices and navigation systems and has
developed exactly that type of telematics
solution for fleet management. The
BF1150 multifunction terminal integrates
the navigation function with a bluetooth
hands free device and electronic logbooks
as well as a telematics function. It allows
the localization of vehicles and real-time
communication between drivers and fleet
dispatchers. A specifically designed web
portal allows the fleet manager to monitor
the fleet status on an interactive map.
From this application, orders can be sent
as text messages, for example, to the telematics
module of a particular fleet vehicle,
which the driver can see on the display of

his device. If an order includes address information,
this can be automatically incorporated
into the navigation system of the
telematics module.
Keeping a vehicle log book will also no
longer be done manually, but will be
completed online via the connection to a
related web portal. In this way the device
is particularly fitting for medium-sized
customers such as small trade or service
businesses, since it is suited to handle
small to medium-sized fleets.
High demands from
the automotive industry on
M2M module technology
The core of each telematics device is the
M2M transfer module. In order for it to be
suitable for an automobile, it must meet
high standards: “The main requirement
for M2M modules in the automotive sector
– besides being as small as possible – is
the stability of the module over the entire
temperature range,” explains Jens Lemke,
development director of Telematics & Navigation
at Bury. Mr. Lemke is responsible
for the development of the BF1150 device.
“Additionally, we have to rely on stable
software that can easily be adjusted under
changing conditions and easily updated
to the newest version.”
As the basis for the reliable transfer of
data, Bury decided on the GE864-QUAD
automotive module from Telit wireless.
With its small form factor of just 30 x 30 x
2.8 mm and an extended temperature range
from -40° to +85°C, it is the ideal hard-
ware platform for the automotive field.
With its quad-band capabilities it can
operate smoothly worldwide in all GSM
networks. The GE864-QUAD automotive
also supports, as with all Telit modules,
the Telit Infinita services that include both
premium FOTA management software with
extended warranty as well as an extended
hardware warranty service.
“The determining factor for choosing Telit
was their comprehensive service commitment,”
says Lemke. “There are strict
deadline requirements in the OEM sector.
Therefore, we must be able to rely on them
at all times for competent support. This
commitment has been fully kept by Telit.”
The BF1150 is expected to be available in
the fourth quarter of 2009. Although the
telematics business is new to Bury, the
feedback is good: The combined demand
for telematics solutions is high and there
are already potential buyers. “Telematics
offers endless possibilities. Consequently,
we are keeping a close eye on our product
development,” says Lemke.
