The Inversion Of The Illustration Process

This work is based on a design experiment which inverts
the illustration process, that is to say it leads from picture
to text instead of the other way around. The idea to
invert originated in the thought of liberating the graphical
material from the text to evoke a richer pictural language.
Narration can be a tight corset that can be restricting in
the image conception.
In the beginning pictures were generated by using the
ability of our mind to construct forms and figures from
splotches. So it was interesting to generate the pictural
material from ”chaos“ in the first place and construct a
flexible narration structure that could capture the pictures
in a meaningful story afterwards.
The title emphasizes two aspects the word illustration
already contains, ”lust“ like the lust to design and experiment
on one hand and on the other hand the fact that the
experiment bases on a rational foundation.

Die Inversion des Illustrationsprozesses
Diese Arbeit basiert auf einem gestalterischen Experiment,
das den Illustrationsprozess umkehrt. Der Weg führt demnach
nicht von einem Text oder Sachverhalt zur bildlichen
Interpretation, sondern vom Bildmaterial zur Narration. Die
Idee zu dieser Inversion entsprang der Beobachtung, dass
der Weg von Text zu Bild oft zu einer eher textverhafteten
Bildsprache führt und die Narration ein enges Korsett der
Erzählstruktur vorgibt. Bei der Umkehrung wurden diese
Konventionen hinterfragt und aufgebrochen.

For raw material paper sheets were splotched. In
this case coffee was used. Subsequently a individual
interpretation of forms and figures seen in
the coincidental blur was drawn up. The method
rests upon the gestalt psychologic ambition to
detect meaning and form even in absurd patterns.
After generating pictures in that way they were
implemented and arranged into a flexible narration
structure building a coherent story in the end.
Der Titel der Arbeit stellt zwei Aspekte heraus, die
das Wort Illustration schon beinhaltet: zum einen
die Lust am Gestalten und Experimentieren, zweitens
die rationale und wissenschaftlich fundierte
Basis des Werks. Zunächst wurde die Fähigkeit
unseres Verstandes genutzt in zufälligen Klecksen
Formen und Figuren zu sehen.
Als Ausgangsmaterial wurden Papierbögen mit
Klecksen generiert. Man verwendete in diesem Fall
Kaffee. Anschließend wurde eine individuelle Interpretation
der grafischen Formen und Figuren aus
den Zufallsformen ausgearbeitet. Das Verfahren
basiert auf dem gestaltpsychologischen Bestreben
selbst in vermeintlich sinnlosen Strukturen Gestalt
zu sehen. Eine flexible Narrationsstruktur wurde
konstruiert, in die das zuvor erstellte Bildmaterial
implementiert, organisiert und zu einer sinnvollen
Geschichte komponiert wurde.

Every picture is developed from a coffee blotch on
paper (110 g/m² antinoe polarwhite), elaborated
and collaged on another 64 � 45 cm sheet
(110 g/m² antinoe sand). The series on the right
makes the process transparent.
Jedes Bild wurde aus einem Kaffeefleck auf Papier
(110 g/m² antinoe polarweiss) entwickelt, ausgearbeitet
und auf ein weiteres Blatt à 64 x 45 cm
(110 g/m² antinoe sand) collagiert. Die Serie rechts
macht diesen Arbeitsprozess transparent.

Digitally reproduced about thirty motifs were selected,
arranged to fit the plot line and finally implemented
in the layout.
Deißig ausgewählte Motive wurden digital reproduziert,
gemäß des Erzählstrangs arrangiert und schließlich in das
Layout implementiert.

For the subsequent elaboration of the form detected
in the blotch different types of ink were used - applied
in graphical or glazed way.
Für die weitere Bearbeitung der im Kaffeeklecks entdeckten
Form wurden verschiedene Tuschen in graphischem
wie lasierendem Auftrag eingesetzt.
