since 2004. Export increases
of at first 21% were followed by 27%
growth in 2005, and in 2006 as well the
Association’s estimates so far point to
double-digit growth. The greatest demand
for imported machinery was
from China, far ahead of the United
States and Russia.
Leading in the sale of high-tech
plant abroad is Italy, followed by
Germany and Japan. In 2006 German
manufacturers increased their production
by 14.4% to 1.7 billion euros
– above all thanks to strong domestic
demand, which was up by 36.6%. The
workload of factories increased since
March 2006 within a year from 102
to 112%, with the metallurgy branch
among the most fully occupied in
German mechanical engineering. The
business position is correspondingly
good: two-thirds of the companies
that participated in the VDMA Smelter
and Rolling Equipment survey reported
improved proceeds in 2006,
and one-third maintained the level of
the year before.
In parallel with the classical ME-
TEC clientele, the suppliers of smelter
and rolling plant equipment, the producers
of steel and NF metals are continuing
their growth – and are represented
at the metallurgy fair together
with their specialist traders and logistics
suppliers for the first time. With
the “Metals Plaza” they are getting a
forum of their own. In combination

Thermprocess
and Newcast fairs
that take place at
the same time,
METEC providesinformation
about all the
important fields
of metal processing
throughout
the value addition
chain. At
the focus are

development are manufacturers of
smelter and rolling equipment able to
satisfy the growing demands of their
customers concerning product quality
and high environment protection
standards.
In parallel with METEC 2007 two
international technical congresses are
taking place, which concern the central
developments in the metallurgical
branch. One of these – the 4th European
Metallurgical Conference on
development potentials in NF metals
production (11 to 14 June) – is being
organised by the German Society for
Mining, Metallurgy, Raw Materials and
Environmental Technology (GDMB).
