as Luzerner Turnier wagt einen Neustart und hofft auf Tradition.
Dass man solcherlei nicht alleine und ohne Erfahrung tut, ist
logisch: Siegbert Brutschin heisst der Erfolgsgarant. Warum der
Direktor des Grand Slam Turnieres in Berlin im „Lido“ hilft.
Dieser Erfolg ist auf Sand gebaut. Quarzsand, um es genau zu nehmen.
Tausend Tonnen werden aus dem Raum Süddeutschland herangeführt
und auf der Lidowiese verbaut. Darauf lässt sich etwas konstruieren. 200
Spiele zum Beispiel. Während den sechs Turniertagen hechten, smashen
und blocken die Athletinnen und Athleten. Sie tanzen mit dem Ball. Aber
ohne den Sand unter ihren Füssen würde es nicht gehen. Nur, niemand
wird dies sehen, niemand wird daran einen Gedanken verschwenden.
Wäre die Unterlage jedoch nicht bereit, dann wäre sie ein grosses Thema.
So verhält es sich mit der Arbeit des Turnierdirektors Siegbert Brutschin.
Der ehemalige ostdeutsche Spitzenhandballer ist mit seinem Team für all
das zuständig, das sich den Zuschauerblicken entzieht. Ein kompliziertes
Geflecht an Aufgaben und Verantwortungen wartet auf ihn. Man möchte
nicht jeden seiner Aktionsbereiche auflisten, diese Tabelle würde jedes
Turniermagazin füllen. Weil es in der Realität nicht von alleine geht, muss
Siegbert ran, «Siggi», wie man ihn nennt, die geballte Erfahrung, wenn
es um das Organisieren und die operative Leitung von volleyballerischen
Grossanlässen geht.
Turniere quer durch Europa designt
«Siggi» hat es 1994 als ehemaliger Chef der Volleyball-Abteilung des
SC Dynamo Berlin als einziger gewagt, in der nachmaligen deutschen
Hauptstadt ein innerstädtisches Beachvolley-Turnier auf die Beine zu
stellen. Was daraus geworden ist, wissen die Fans dieser Sportart: Eines
der führenden Turniere im weltweiten Kalender. Berlin eben. 2005

The Lucerne tournament is relaunching and has its sights set on tradition.
But a solo attempt without outside expertise just wouldn’t make
sense. Enter “secret weapon” Siegbert Brutschin. We find out why the
director of the Berlin Grand Slam has agreed to lend a hand at the Lido.
This success is built on sand – silica sand, to be precise. A thousand tons
are being brought from southern Germany and installed at the Lido,
providing an excellent foundation to build something upon – 200 matches
for instance. Athletes will be diving, spiking and blocking during
the five-day event – they’ll be dancing with the ball. All of this would not
be possible without the sand beneath their feet. But no one will notice
the surface and no one will spare it a single thought – but it would soon
become a major issue if it were not ready.
This also sums up the work of the tournament’s director Siegbert Brutschin.
The former elite handball player for East Germany and his team
are responsible for everything that takes place behind the scenes.
There’s a complex network of tasks and challenges waiting for him. We
cannot list them all here – they would fill an entire tournament magazine
alone. And because things don’t run themselves, it’s time to call Siegbert
– or “Siggi”, as he’s known – who can draw from a wealth of experience
when it comes to the organization and operational management of major
volleyball events.
Shaping European events
As head of volleyball at Dynamo Berlin, Siggi was the only person who
dared to get a city centre beach volleyball event up and running in
Germany’s future capital. That was in 1994. Fans of the sport will know
what happened next – it became one of the major fixtures in the global
calendar, peaking in 2005 with the World Championships featuring 96
teams – a gigantic event that propelled beach volleyball into new spheres.
And now Siggi has come to Lucerne Lido. He says speed will be
of the essence: “You could say we are building an urban infrastructure
