Beach-Volleyball – vom Freizeitvergnügen zum Leistungssport
Obschon Beachvolleyball eine sehr trendige, fast schon coole Sportart
ist, reichen deren Wurzeln bis in die 20er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts
zurück. Zu Beginn ein lässiger Zeitvertrieb kalifornischer Surfer
und Strand-Bohémiens hat sich die Sportart im Laufe der Jahrzehnte
kontinuierlich weiter entwickelt und wurde 1996 erstmals als olympische
Disziplin geführt. Heute herrschen in zahlreichen Ländern, mitunter die
Schweiz, professionelle Strukturen.
In Anlehnung an Hallen-Volleyball hat Beach-Volleyball seine Wurzeln
als Spiel sechs gegen sechs. Kalifornische Surfer waren es, die um 1920
am Strand von Santa Monica die ersten Beach-Spiele austrugen. Beach-
Volleyball wie wir es heute kennen, ein Spiel zwei gegen zwei, wurde
erstmals 1930 gespielt.
Technisch hatte die damalige Form mit dem heutigen Spiel jedoch wenig
gemeinsam, die Spielzüge bestanden in erster Linie aus Aufschlag
und Pritschen. Blocken und Schmettern waren zu dieser Zeit noch Zukunftsmusik.
Knapp 20 Jahre später fiel die noch junge Sportart in ein
Loch: der zweite Weltkrieg bestimmte den Alltag, Freizeitsport war Nebensache.
1948, drei Jahre nach Kriegsende läutete das erste Zweier-
Team-Turnier die Wiedergeburt des Beach-Volleyballs ein. Weitere zwei
Jahre später lockten fünf Turniere an fünf verschiedenen Stränden Kaliforniens
zahlreiche Zuschauer an.
Wachsende Beliebtheit
Über die Szene hinaus bekannt wurde Beach-Volleyball 1957 mit den
kalifornischen Meisterschaften. Erstmals fanden Spiele im Rahmen einer
glamourösen gesellschaftlichen Veranstaltung statt. Die Turniersieger
Gene Selznick und Bernie Holzmann wurden als die ersten Beach-
Helden der Geschichte gefeiert. 1965 organisierten sich die Spieler in
der neu gegründeten «California Beach Volleyball Association» (CBVA).
Dieser erste Beach-Volleyball-Verband legte die ersten offiziellen Regeln
fest und organisierte die ersten offiziellen Turniere. Fast zwei Jahrzehnte
später wurde die «Association of Volleyball Professionals» (AVP) ins
Leben gerufen mit dem Zweck, die Interessen der Sportler zu vertreten.

Beach Volleyball – from recreational game to competitive sport
Although beach volleyball is a thoroughly modern and very on-trend
sport, its beginnings go back to the 1920s. What started out as a leisure
pastime for Californian surfers and beach bohemians grew steadily over
the decades, becoming a first-time Olympic discipline in 1996. Today,
the sport enjoys professional structures in numerous countries, including
Switzerland.
Based on indoor volleyball, beach volleyball derives from a game of sixa-side
and was played for the first time around 1920 on the beach at Santa
Monica. Two-a-side beach volleyball as we know it today first arrived
on the scene in 1930.
The game in its original form had little in common with today’s sport
and was primarily a game of serving and setting. The introduction of
skills such as blocking and spiking was still a long way off. Almost 20
years later, this emerging sport suffered a setback due to the outbreak
of World War II. Three years on, in 1948, the first two-a-side tournament
heralded beach volleyball’s resurgence, and two years later five tournaments
held at five different Californian beaches attracted vast numbers
of spectators.
Surging popularity
Beach volleyball began to gain recognition beyond an inner circle of enthusiasts
in 1957, when the Californian Championships were held amid
a glamorous social event. Tournament victors Gene Selznick and Bernie
Holtzman were hailed as the first beach volleyball heroes. In 1965, players
came together in the newly established California Beach Volleyball
Association (CBVA) to set down rules and organize the first official tournaments.
Almost two decades later, the Association of Volleyball Professionals
(AVP) was founded with the purpose of representing the athletes’
interests.
Taking Europe by storm
Beach volleyball didn’t fully cross the Atlantic until the late 1980s. And
that’s when things really took off: in 1993, the southern Spanish city of
Almeria hosted the first European Championships. In 1996, the sport
became a first-time Olympic discipline at the Summer Games in Atlanta,
USA. And just one year later, in 1997, the first official World Championships
were held in Los Angeles. By now, the associations were in the
process of building up professional structures. Countries from all corners
of the globe were challenging the athletic and commercial dominance
of the USA and Brazil, with upcoming nations such as Germany, Australia
and China claiming their share of medals. Today, four Major Series tournaments
and six Grand Slams and Open events each take place annually
in addition to the official championships.
Successful Swiss beach volleyball scene
Beach volleyball began to really catch on in Switzerland in 1992, when
Lucerne was the host city of the Swiss Championships. A successfully expanding
tournament series was launched just one year later. Parliament
