W
ie beurteilen Sie das Niveau des
Schweizer Beach-Volleyballs im
internationalen Vergleich? Wird der
Anschluss an die internationale Spitze für ein
relativ kleines Land wie die Schweiz nicht immer
komplexer?
Beachvolleyball hat sich in den letzten fünf bis zehn
Jahren enorm entwickelt, wird immer professioneller.
Als relativ «kleines» Land müssen wir qualitativ
sehr gut arbeiten, um mit den Besten mithalten zu
können. Dies verlangt eine stetige Überprüfung und
Anpassung der aktuellen Strukturen. Durch die optimale
Betreuung unserer Athletinnen und Athleten
im Nationalen Leistungszentrum in Bern verfügen
wir aber über gute Voraussetzungen, nach wie vor zu
den Top Nationen im Beachvolleyball zu gehören.
Wie viele Beach-Volleyballer bzw. Volleyballerinnen
sind im Verband organisiert? Wie ist die
Tendenz?
In der Schweiz sind rund 3’000 lizensierte Beachvolleyballer/innen
und rund 35’000 Volleyballer/innen.

How would you rate Swiss beach volleyball in an
international comparison? Isn’t it becoming more
and more complex for a relatively small country
like Switzerland to stay in touch with the international
elite?
Beach volleyball has grown at a tremendous pace
and become increasingly professional in the last
five to 10 years. As a comparatively small country,
we need to work at a high standard in order to
keep up with our closest competitors. This requires
a continual review process and adjustments to our
current structures. Our National Centre of Excellence
in Berne and the support it offers our athletes put us
in an exceptional position to retain our status as one
of the leading beach volleyball nations.
How many beach volleyball and volleyball players
belong to the national federation? What’s the
trend?
There are around 3000 licensed beach volleyball and
around 35,000 licensed volleyball players. However,
if you count regularly active unlicensed volleyball
players, the figure rises considerably. According to a
survey by the Swiss Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO),
Switzerland has some 180,000 regular volleyball
players. This is a substantial figure representing a
well of potential waiting to be tapped.
How many permanent beach courts are there in
Switzerland?
That’s difficult to estimate. There were around
300 courts a few years ago. This number is rising,
because many schools and municipalities have also
installed courts in the meantime.
