stellen sich uneigennützig in den Dienst einer guten Sache. Ohne „Volunteers“

IM AUFWIND! 

Ich freue mich sehr, Sie alle zu unserer diesjährigen FIVB World Tour 

begrüßen zu dürfen! 

In diesem Jahr beinhaltet die Tour fünf FIVB Grand Slams, drei Veranstaltungen 

der neuen Swatch FIVB Beach-Volleyball Major Series, sechs 

FIVB OPEN und ein spezielles Swatch FIVB Beach-Volleyball World Tour 

Finale in den Vereinigten Staaten. Ich bin sehr gespannt, wie sich die 

Athleten im Wettbewerb 2015 präsentieren – gerade vor den Olympischen 

Spielen nächstes Jahr in Rio. 

2015 startete mit einer Reihe von neuen Partnerschaften für die FIVB, 

die uns in unserer Vision unterstützen, Volleyball zur grössten und bezaubersten 

„Familien-Sport-Unterhaltung“ in der Welt zu machen. 

Ich freue mich, dass in diesem Jahr Swatch als Titelsponsor für die 

Wettkämpfe der Major Series zurückkehrt, die auch von einer aufregenden 

neuen Partnerschaft mit Red Bull profitieren. Diese Partnerschaften 

werden dazu beitragen, das Programm noch dynamischer und 

anregender als je zuvor für Athleten und Fans auf der ganzen Welt zu 

gestalten. 

Die Tour umspannt 14 Länder auf der ganzen Welt und ist ohne Zweifel 

der grösste Beachvolleyball-Wettbewerb des Jahres. Ich bin sicher, 

unsere Helden werden elektrisierende Auftritte im Sand liefern und so 

versuchen, die zweite Gelegenheit zur Qualifikation für die Olympischen 

Spiele 2016 in Rio zu nutzen. 

Die diesjährige Tour wird uns alle von den Sitzen reissen. Ich freue mich 

darauf, zusammen mit den Volleyball-Fans weltweit, zu beobachten, 

welche Stars den Weg nach Rio 2016 schaffen - wenn dann alle Augen 

auf Beachvolleyball in seiner geistigen Heimat, dem Strand der Copacabana 

in Rio, gerichtet sind. 

I am thrilled to welcome you all to this year’s FIVB Beach Volleyball World 

Tour! This year the Tour includes five FIVB Grand Slams, a new FIVB 

Swatch Beach Volleyball Major Series of three events, six FIVB Opens 

and a special Swatch Beach Volleyball FIVB World Tour Final in the United 

States, and I am very excited to see what the athletes will bring to the 

competition in 2015 ahead of next year’s Olympic Games in Rio. 

2015 was kick-started with a number of new partnerships for the FIVB 

which will help us in our vision to making volleyball the most engaging 

family sport entertainment in the world. 

I am delighted that this year the Tour sees the return of Swatch as the title 

sponsor for the Major Series events which will also benefit from an exciting 

new partnership with Red Bull. These partnerships will help create 

an even more dynamic and stimulating programme than ever before for 

athletes and fans around the world. 

With the Tour spanning 14 countries around the world, this is without 

doubt the biggest beach volleyball competition of the year, and I am 

sure our heroes will deliver electrifying performances as they take to the 

stage for what will be the second qualification opportunity ahead of the 

2016 Olympic Games in Rio. 

This year’s Tour will have us all on the edge of our seats and I look forward 

to watching each event alongside volleyball’s global fans as we 

anticipate which stars will make it to Rio 2016 – where all eyes will be on 

beach volleyball as it takes the stage in its spiritual home on Copacabana 

Beach.

ZURÜCK! 

Die erste Beachvolleyball-Schweizermeisterschaft hat 1992 in Luzern 

stattgefunden – ein Pionierevent zu einer Zeit, als die heutige olympische 

Disziplin noch ein aufkommender Trendsport war. Beachvolleyball 

hat sich zu einer für Athletinnen, Athleten und Fans attraktiven Elite- 

Sportart entwickelt. Währenddessen ist die Bilderbuchstadt Luzern zu 

einem bedeutenden Tourismusort für Gäste aus aller Welt geworden. 

Ich bin überzeugt, dass die Stadt am Vierwaldstättersee ein idealer Austragungsort 

für das neue FIVB-Open – eines der internationalen Top-Turniere 

– ist. Und ich darf es schon vorwegnehmen: im nächsten Jahr folgt 

mit den FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championships 2016 bereits 

das zweite Highlight.

Welcome back! In 1992, Lucerne hosted the first Swiss Championships in 

beach volleyball – a pioneering event at a time when this now-Olympic 

discipline was still an emerging on-trend sport. In the meantime, beach 

volleyball has evolved into an attractive top-class sport that delights athletes 

and fans alike, and the beautiful city of Lucerne has become a major 

tourism destination, attracting guests from all over the globe. 

I am confident that this lakeside city provides the perfect setting for one 

of the leading tournaments worldwide – the new FIVB Open. And in 

2016, we can look forward to the next highlight in the shape of the FIVB 

Beach Volleyball Under-21 World Championships.

Lucerne already: Even today the athletes praise Lucerne

the creeps when they get on the Venue.

Die Beachvolleyball-Saison in Europa startet 

dieses Jahr erstmals in Luzern. 

Marcel Bourquin trägt eine gewisse Schuld daran. 

Was den Präsidenten des World Tour Opens 

dazu gebracht hat, Spitzen-Beachvolleyball 

nach Luzern zu bringen. 

Weshalb kommt Luzern zu einem FIVB World Tour Open im 

Beachvolleyball? 

Marcel Bourquin: 2011 habe ich zufällig Siegbert Brutschin, 

einen alten Bekannten aus früheren Volleyzeiten, im Flughafen Zürich 

getroffen. Er erzählte mir vom Zuschlag für die Schweiz für die Europameisterschaften 

2016 und davon, dass vorher aber zwei Masters 

durchgeführt werden müssten. Spontan entstand die Idee, dies alles in 

Luzern stattfinden zu lassen – aber nur, wenn Siggi als Turnierdirektor 

mitmachen würde. Er ist jetzt unser Turnierdirektor. 

Was möchten Sie mit dem World Tour Open in Luzern erreichen? 

Wir möchten die Tradition eines schönen Boutique-Turniers gründen, 

an dem jedes Jahr die Besten der Welt teilnehmen wollen. 

Was ist ein Boutique-Turnier? 

Ein kleines, aber feines Turnier, das in der Bedeutung hinter den weltweit 

vier Major- und den sechs Grand Slam-Turnieren rangiert, das aber 

für die Athletinnen und Athleten dennoch wichtig für das Sammeln von 

Punkten ist. 

Nächstes Jahr ist an gleicher Stelle die U21-WM geplant? 

Das ist so. Wir haben die grösste Freude an Nachwuchsveranstaltungen 

dieser Art. Mir persönlich ist es immer schon ein Anliegen gewesen, 

für Junge eine Bühne dieser Art zu bieten. Aus diesem Grund engagiere 

ich mich seit mehr als zehn Jahren für diese, aber auch für andere 

Sportarten. Mit den inzwischen vier Beachvolleyball-Feldern im Lido 

haben wir zudem eine gute Grundinfrastruktur, auf der wir für Anlässe 

dieser Art aufbauen können. 

Warum wollten Sie nie eine Weltmeisterschaft für die Spitze machen? 

Wir können dies nicht, weil uns dazu die Ressourcen fehlen. Es bräuchte 

ein grösseres Stadion mit mehr als doppelt so vielen Plätzen, dazu Site- 

Courts. Aber das liegt für uns gar nicht drin, auch weil wir das grosse, 

alljährliche Turnier in Gstaad auf keine Weise konkurrieren möchten. 

Gstaad ist aus meiner Sicht eines der drei besten Beachvolleyball-Turniere 

der Welt. Man muss realistisch und bescheiden bleiben. Wir sind 

gewissermassen die Schweizer Vorbereitung auf Gstaad.

Dennoch, warum gerade in Luzern? 

Die Lidowiese direkt am Luzerner Seebecken liefert eine Naturarena, 

die wohl ihresgleichen sucht. Ich vergleiche diese Lage mit dem so 

genannten Göttersee der Ruderwelt, dem Rotsee. Entsprechend beliebt 

ist Luzern im Teilnehmerfeld. Ausserdem möchte ich meiner Stadt 

etwas zurück geben: Luzern erhält dank dem Turnier ein zusätzliches 

Beachvolley-Feld, das bleiben wird, und während mindestens einer 

Woche eine sympathische Ausstrahlung in der ganzen Welt.

The best beach vollyball in Luzern 

How did it come about that Lucerne gets to host a FIVB World Tour 

event? 

Marcel Bourquin: In 2011, I bumped into my old volleyball friend 

Siegbert Brutschin at Zurich airport. He told me that Switzerland had 

secured the hosting of the 2016 European Championships and mentioned 

that two Masters events needed to be held prior to this. It was a 

spur-of-the-moment decision to bring them to Lucerne, but only if Siggi 

would agree to come on board as the tournament’s director. He’s now 

our Tournament Director. 

What would you like to achieve with the World Tour Open in Lucerne? 

We would like to establish a boutique tournament that attracts the 

world’s best players to Lucerne every year. 

What is a boutique tournament? 

A small, select tournament that ranks in significance below the worldwide 

four Major and six Grand Slam events but is an important fixture in 

terms of the available points. 

And next year’s Under-21 World Championships will take place at 

the same venue? 

That’s correct. We love events like this and providing opportunities and 

support for young athletes has always been close to my heart. This is 

why I can look back on more than 10 years of commitment to beach 

volleyball and other sports. And the four volleyball courts at the Lido 

give us the infrastructure and facilities to host events of this kind. 

Why aren’t you aiming to organize world championships for elite 

players? 

We simply do not have the resources. We would need a larger stadium 

with more than double the current number of courts, as well as side

Was fasziniert Sie am Beachvolleyball? 

Beachvolleyball ist eine technische Sportart, die von jedem einzelnen 

viel Verantwortung abverlangt. Zudem sind die Spielorte meist sehr 

schön gelegen, was Zuschauerinnen und Zuschauer jeden Alters geniessen. 

Ich erwarte in Luzern ein volles Stadion. Während der Woche 

rechnen wir mit rund 40‘000 Personen auf allen Anlagen – zumal der 

Eintritt kostenlos ist und durch Tagessponsoren getragen wird. 

Wenn Sie selber auf dem Spielfeld stehen würden: Wo würde Ihre 

Stärke liegen? 

Ich wäre klar der Blocker am Netz. Ich kann gut antizipieren und mich 

vorher schon dahin bewegen, wo die Post erst noch abgehen wird.

to compete with the big annual tournament in Gstaad. In my opinion, 

Gstaad is one of the top three beach volleyball tournaments in the 

world. We have to be realistic and keep our feet on the ground. We are 

the Swiss preparation event for Gstaad, as it were. 

Nevertheless, why specifically in Lucerne? 

The Lido lies directly on Lucerne Bay and provides an unparalleled 

natural arena. I’d compare this location with the nearby Rotsee, the 

so-called “Lake of the Gods” so popular with rowing sports. I also want 

to give something back to my city – the tournament is giving Lucerne 

an additional permanent beach volleyball court and at least a week of 

great worldwide exposure. 

What do you expect from the World Tour Open in terms of athletic 

performance? 

It’s possible that we will be hosting the world’s best teams. Everyone’s 

raring to go after long training camps. Lucerne is the first European 

tournament that has qualification points for the 2016 Rio Olympics 

up for grabs. We are also the second tournament worldwide after the 

season debut in China. 

What fascinates you about beach volleyball? 

Beach volleyball is a sport that demands skill, technique and a great 

deal of responsibility from each player. The events usually take place 

at scenic locations, to the enjoyment of spectators of all ages. I expect 

a full house in Lucerne. In fact we’re expecting around 40,000 spectators 

at all facilities during the week – with free admission thanks to our 

sponsors’ support.

Anreise 

Viele Wege führen ans Luzern Open. Hier die einfachsten: 

Wer mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln anreist, steigt am besten am 

Hauptbahnhof in Luzern in die VBL-Busse Nummer 6 oder 8 Richtung 

Würzenbach. Nach sechs Minuten Fahrzeit steigt man an der Haltestelle 

Verkehrshaus/Lido aus und ist in fünf Minuten auf dem Open Gelände. 

Die Busse verkehren in der Regel alle acht bis zehn Minuten. 

Wer lieber Zug fährt: Stets um .40 Uhr fährt der Voralpenexpress Richtung 

St.Gallen ab. Der erste Halt nach sechs Minuten ist auch gleich 

das Ziel. Die S3 verlässt jeweils um .06 Uhr den Hauptbahnhof und hält 

ebenfalls nach sechs Minuten am Verkehrshaus. 

Mit dem Auto führt der Weg über die Autobahn nach Luzern, Ausfahrt 

Stadt Luzern. Danach immer Richtung Verkehrshaus. Zu beachten: Die 

Zahl der Parkplätze ist beschränkt.

the most important questions: when, what, where, how? 

Getting here 

Many roads lead to the Lucerne Open. These are the most convenient: 

Coming by public transport? At Lucerne main station, catch VBL Bus No. 

6 or 8 towards Würzenbach. The journey to the Swiss Museum of Transport 

(Verkehrshaus/Lido stop) takes around six minutes. From there, it’s 

just a five-minute walk to the Open venue. Busses normally run at 8 to 

10-minute intervals. 

Letting the train take the strain? The Pre-Alpine Express departs hourly 

at .40 hrs for St. Gallen. Get off at the first stop (a six-minute ride). The S3 

train leaves Lucerne main station hourly (at .06 hrs) and takes six minutes 

to reach the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus) stop. Get here 

by car by taking the motorway to Lucerne. Take the Lucerne City exit and 

follow the road signs to the Swiss Museum of Transport (Verkehrshaus). 

Parking space is limited.

Spielzeiten 

Das Turnier beginnt bereits mit der Qualifikation am 

Montag, 11. Mai. Start der ersten Spiele ist um 13.30 

Uhr. Gespielt wird stets auf dem Center Court und 

auf drei weiteren Feldern, die sich gleich neben der 

Hauptarena auf dem Gelände des Strandbads Lido 

befinden. Am Dienstag, 12. Mai, startet der Spielbetrieb 

um 10 Uhr und dauert bis frühestens 18.30 Uhr. 

Mittwoch, Donnerstag und Freitag spielen die Teams 

zwischen 09.00 Uhr morgens bis spätestens 20.00 Uhr 

abends. Am Halbfinalsamstag, 16. Mai, ist von 10.00 

Uhr morgens bis sicherlich 20.00 Uhr abends Betrieb, 

am Finalsonntag, 17. Mai, von 11.00 Uhr morgens bis 

zur Siegesfeier um 18.30 Uhr abends.

The semi-finals on Saturday 16 May take place from 

10.00 until 20.00 hrs, the Sunday 17 May finals from

KKL Luzern (Kultur- und Kongresszentrum Luzern)

der Welt. Weiter sind der Luzerner Saal, das Auditorium und das Kunstmuseum

Kapellbrücke 

Die Brücke wurde in der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts als Teil der 

Stadtbefestigung errichtet. Die im 17. Jahrhundert eingefügten Bildtafeln 

haben Szenen der Schweizer- und Stadtgeschichte und das Leben 

der Stadtpatrone Luzerns zum Inhalt. 

Wasserturm 

Der achteckige und über 34 Meter hohe Turm wurde um 1300 als Teil der 

Stadtbefestigung erbaut. Früher wurde er als Archiv, Tresorraum, Gefängnis, 

Verhör- und Folterraum genutzt. Heute ist er das Wahrzeichen 

von Luzern und das meistfotografierte Denkmal der Schweiz. 

Jesuitenkirche 

Ist der erste grosse, sakrale Barockbau der Schweiz und wurde um 1666 

durch Pater Christoph Vogler im Auftrag der Jesuiten errichtet. Mitte 

des 18. Jahrhunderts erfolgte die Neuausschmückung des Gewölbes. 

Eindrucksvoll ist auch die Akustik des prächtigen Kirchenraumes.

KKL Luzern (Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne) 

The KKL Luzern on Europaplatz is the work of the Parisian architect, Jean 

Nouvel. The main concert hall seats 1840 and ranks amongst the world‘s 

best. The Lucerne Hall, the auditorium and the museum of art also form 

part of this architectural masterpiece (Public and private tours on application). 

Chapel Bridge 

This bridge was constructed in the first half of the 14th century as part 

of the city’s fortifications. The painted panels added in the 17th century 

portray scenes of Swiss and local history, including the lives of Lucerne‘s 

patron saints. 

Water Tower 

This octagonal tower, over 34 meters in height, was built around 1300 

as part of the city’s fortifications. It has been used as an archive, treasury, 

prison and torture chamber. It is now Lucerne’s trademark attraction and 

Switzerland‘s most-photographed monument. 

Jesuit Church 

Established around 1666 by Father Christoph Vogler for the Jesuits, this 

was the first large baroque building of an ecclesiastical nature to be erected 

in Switzerland. The dome was newly embellished in the mid 18th century. 

Also worth noting are the acoustics of the church‘s magnificent interior.

ie beurteilen Sie das Niveau des 

Schweizer Beach-Volleyballs im 

internationalen Vergleich? Wird der 

Anschluss an die internationale Spitze für ein 

relativ kleines Land wie die Schweiz nicht immer 

komplexer? 

Beachvolleyball hat sich in den letzten fünf bis zehn 

Jahren enorm entwickelt, wird immer professioneller. 

Als relativ «kleines» Land müssen wir qualitativ 

sehr gut arbeiten, um mit den Besten mithalten zu 

können. Dies verlangt eine stetige Überprüfung und 

Anpassung der aktuellen Strukturen. Durch die optimale 

Betreuung unserer Athletinnen und Athleten 

im Nationalen Leistungszentrum in Bern verfügen 

wir aber über gute Voraussetzungen, nach wie vor zu 

den Top Nationen im Beachvolleyball zu gehören. 

Wie viele Beach-Volleyballer bzw. Volleyballerinnen 

sind im Verband organisiert? Wie ist die 

Tendenz? 

In der Schweiz sind rund 3’000 lizensierte Beachvolleyballer/innen

How would you rate Swiss beach volleyball in an 

international comparison? Isn’t it becoming more 

and more complex for a relatively small country 

like Switzerland to stay in touch with the international 

elite? 

Beach volleyball has grown at a tremendous pace 

and become increasingly professional in the last 

five to 10 years. As a comparatively small country, 

we need to work at a high standard in order to 

keep up with our closest competitors. This requires 

a continual review process and adjustments to our 

current structures. Our National Centre of Excellence 

in Berne and the support it offers our athletes put us 

in an exceptional position to retain our status as one 

of the leading beach volleyball nations. 

How many beach volleyball and volleyball players 

belong to the national federation? What’s the 

trend? 

There are around 3000 licensed beach volleyball and 

around 35,000 licensed volleyball players. However, 

if you count regularly active unlicensed volleyball 

players, the figure rises considerably. According to a 

survey by the Swiss Federal Office of Sport (FOSPO), 

Switzerland has some 180,000 regular volleyball 

players. This is a substantial figure representing a 

well of potential waiting to be tapped. 

How many permanent beach courts are there in 

Switzerland? 

That’s difficult to estimate. There were around 

300 courts a few years ago. This number is rising, 

because many schools and municipalities have also 

installed courts in the meantime.

Jedoch sind diese Zahlen um ein vielfaches höher einzustufen, wenn 

es um aktive Volleyballer geht, die regelmässig ohne Lizenz Volleyball 

spielen. Gemäss einer Studie des Baspo (Bundesamt für Sport) spielen 

in der Schweiz rund 180‘000 Personen regelmässig Volleyball. Das ist 

eine stolze Zahl, die viel Potential birgt. 

Wie viele fixe Beach-Plätze bzw. -Courts gibt es in der Schweiz? 

Das ist im Grunde sehr schwierig einzuschätzen. Vor ein paar Jahren 

hatten wir ca. 300 Courts in der Schweiz. Die Tendenz ist sicher 

steigend, da mittlerweile viele Schulen und Gemeinden weitere Felder 

gebaut haben. 

Wie beurteilen Sie die Stadt Luzern als Austragungsort eines internationalen 

Beach Open? 

Luzern hat eine sehr lange Tradition mit Beachvolleyball und verfügt 

mit dem Regionalverband (RVI) über eine der aktivsten Beachvolleyballregionen. 

Mit dem Standort des Lidos geht man an den Ursprung des 

Schweizer Beachvolleyballs zurück. 

Wen zählen Sie als Ihre persönlichen Favoriten bei den Frauen und 

Männern in Luzern? 

Bei den Männer gehören sicher die Teams aus Spanien (Herrera/Gavira), 

Holland (Brouwer/Meeuwsen Weltmeister 2013) und Nummerdor/ 

Varenhorst sowie das Team aus Lettland (Samoilovs/Smedins) zu den 

Favoriten. Aber auch mit dem Schweizer Team Gabathuler/Gerson ist 

in Luzern zu rechnen, welches im letzten Jahr mit zwei Podestplätzen 

bewiesen hat, dass es auf Augenhöhe mit der Spitze ist. Bei den Frauen 

zähle ich die Teams aus Deutschland (Holtwick/Semmler) – die Nr. 4 des 

Worldrankings und Gewinnerinnen des Grand Slam Gstaad 2014 – und 

Italien (Menegatti/Orsi Toth) sowie die aktuellen Europameisterinnen 

aus Holland (Meppelink/Van Iersel) zu den Favoriten. Mit den Schweizer 

Frauen-Teams ist aber an ihrem ersten Heimturnier bestimmt auch 

zu rechnen (Heidrich/Zumkehr, Goricanec/Hüberli und Forrer/Vergé- 

Dépré). 

How do you rate the city of Lucerne as an International Beach Open 

venue? 

Lucerne has a longstanding beach volleyball tradition and a regional 

association (RVI) in one of the country’s most active beach volleyball 

regions. And the Lido venue takes Swiss beach volleyball right back to 

its origins. 

Who are your favourites for the men and women’s competitions in 

Lucerne? 

My favourites in the men’s category certainly include the teams from 

Spain (Herrera/Gavira), Holland (Brouwer/Meeuwsen; World Champions 

2013) and Nummerdor/Varenhorst and Latvia (Samoilovs/Smedins). 

The Swiss team Gabathuler/Gerson claimed two podiums last year, 

indicating that they are also a force to be reckoned with in Lucerne. 

My favourites in the women’s competition include the German teams 

(Holtwick/Semmler – ranked fourth in the world and winners of last 

year’s Gstaad Grand Slam) – and Italy (Menegatti/Orsi Toth) as well as 

the current European champions from Holland (Meppelink/Van Iersel). 

And the Swiss teams can certainly not be discounted in their first home 

event (Heidrich/Zumkehr, Goricanec/Hüberli and Forrer/Vergé-Dépré).

EINER TRENDIGEN 

SPORTART 

Beach-Volleyball – vom Freizeitvergnügen zum Leistungssport 

Obschon Beachvolleyball eine sehr trendige, fast schon coole Sportart 

ist, reichen deren Wurzeln bis in die 20er Jahre des letzten Jahrhunderts 

zurück. Zu Beginn ein lässiger Zeitvertrieb kalifornischer Surfer 

und Strand-Bohémiens hat sich die Sportart im Laufe der Jahrzehnte 

kontinuierlich weiter entwickelt und wurde 1996 erstmals als olympische 

Disziplin geführt. Heute herrschen in zahlreichen Ländern, mitunter die 

Schweiz, professionelle Strukturen. 

In Anlehnung an Hallen-Volleyball hat Beach-Volleyball seine Wurzeln 

als Spiel sechs gegen sechs. Kalifornische Surfer waren es, die um 1920 

am Strand von Santa Monica die ersten Beach-Spiele austrugen. Beach- 

Volleyball wie wir es heute kennen, ein Spiel zwei gegen zwei, wurde 

erstmals 1930 gespielt. 

Technisch hatte die damalige Form mit dem heutigen Spiel jedoch wenig 

gemeinsam, die Spielzüge bestanden in erster Linie aus Aufschlag 

und Pritschen. Blocken und Schmettern waren zu dieser Zeit noch Zukunftsmusik. 

Knapp 20 Jahre später fiel die noch junge Sportart in ein 

Loch: der zweite Weltkrieg bestimmte den Alltag, Freizeitsport war Nebensache. 

1948, drei Jahre nach Kriegsende läutete das erste Zweier- 

Team-Turnier die Wiedergeburt des Beach-Volleyballs ein. Weitere zwei 

Jahre später lockten fünf Turniere an fünf verschiedenen Stränden Kaliforniens 

zahlreiche Zuschauer an. 

Wachsende Beliebtheit 

Über die Szene hinaus bekannt wurde Beach-Volleyball 1957 mit den 

kalifornischen Meisterschaften. Erstmals fanden Spiele im Rahmen einer 

glamourösen gesellschaftlichen Veranstaltung statt. Die Turniersieger 

Gene Selznick und Bernie Holzmann wurden als die ersten Beach- 

Helden der Geschichte gefeiert. 1965 organisierten sich die Spieler in 

der neu gegründeten «California Beach Volleyball Association» (CBVA). 

Dieser erste Beach-Volleyball-Verband legte die ersten offiziellen Regeln 

fest und organisierte die ersten offiziellen Turniere. Fast zwei Jahrzehnte 

später wurde die «Association of Volleyball Professionals» (AVP) ins 

Leben gerufen mit dem Zweck, die Interessen der Sportler zu vertreten.

Beach Volleyball – from recreational game to competitive sport 

Although beach volleyball is a thoroughly modern and very on-trend 

sport, its beginnings go back to the 1920s. What started out as a leisure 

pastime for Californian surfers and beach bohemians grew steadily over 

the decades, becoming a first-time Olympic discipline in 1996. Today, 

the sport enjoys professional structures in numerous countries, including 

Switzerland. 

Based on indoor volleyball, beach volleyball derives from a game of sixa-side 

and was played for the first time around 1920 on the beach at Santa 

Monica. Two-a-side beach volleyball as we know it today first arrived 

on the scene in 1930. 

The game in its original form had little in common with today’s sport 

and was primarily a game of serving and setting. The introduction of 

skills such as blocking and spiking was still a long way off. Almost 20 

years later, this emerging sport suffered a setback due to the outbreak 

of World War II. Three years on, in 1948, the first two-a-side tournament 

heralded beach volleyball’s resurgence, and two years later five tournaments 

held at five different Californian beaches attracted vast numbers 

of spectators. 

Surging popularity 

Beach volleyball began to gain recognition beyond an inner circle of enthusiasts 

in 1957, when the Californian Championships were held amid 

a glamorous social event. Tournament victors Gene Selznick and Bernie 

Holtzman were hailed as the first beach volleyball heroes. In 1965, players 

came together in the newly established California Beach Volleyball 

Association (CBVA) to set down rules and organize the first official tournaments. 

Almost two decades later, the Association of Volleyball Professionals 

(AVP) was founded with the purpose of representing the athletes’ 

interests. 

Taking Europe by storm 

Beach volleyball didn’t fully cross the Atlantic until the late 1980s. And 

that’s when things really took off: in 1993, the southern Spanish city of 

Almeria hosted the first European Championships. In 1996, the sport 

became a first-time Olympic discipline at the Summer Games in Atlanta, 

USA. And just one year later, in 1997, the first official World Championships 

were held in Los Angeles. By now, the associations were in the 

process of building up professional structures. Countries from all corners 

of the globe were challenging the athletic and commercial dominance 

of the USA and Brazil, with upcoming nations such as Germany, Australia 

and China claiming their share of medals. Today, four Major Series tournaments 

and six Grand Slams and Open events each take place annually 

in addition to the official championships. 

Successful Swiss beach volleyball scene 

Beach volleyball began to really catch on in Switzerland in 1992, when 

Lucerne was the host city of the Swiss Championships. A successfully expanding 

tournament series was launched just one year later. Parliament

Vom Freizeitsport zum Profigeschäft 

Beach-Volleyball galt seit seiner Entstehung an den Stränden 

der USA lange Zeit als Trend- oder Freizeitsport. Heute wird der 

Sport sowohl von Profis als auch von zahlreichen Amateuren ausgeübt. 

Beach-Volleyball ist räumlich nicht auf natürliche Strände 

beschränkt. Auch in Innenstädten, die weit vom Meer entfernt 

liegen, existieren gute Spielfelder. Die WM 2007 fand sogar im 

über 1’000 m hoch gelegenen Gstaad in der Schweiz statt. Durch 

die zunehmende mediale Beachtung wird Beachvolleyball immer 

beliebter. Neben den Hobbyspielern nutzen auch viele in der 

Halle aktive Profis die Sommerpause zum Spiel im Sand. Einige 

von ihnen überbrücken damit nur die Zeit zwischen dem Saisonende 

und dem Beginn der Vorbereitung, andere starten gar mit 

sportlichen Ambitionen bei Turnieren. 

Square in Berne has been the permanent venue for the Swiss Championships 

since 1998 with the exception of 2003, when the event was 

elaborately staged at Zurich Central Station, garnering public exposure 

and media attention. Switzerland’s beach volleyball capital however is 

Gstaad. This upmarket resort in the Bernese Oberland hosted the 2007 

World Championships and is the regular venue of a World Tour Major 

event. 

After the Germans, the Swiss men are the most successful nation to 

compete at European Championships. The lion’s share of this success 

is arguably due to two brothers – Martin and Paul Laciga – who won the 

title in three consecutive years between 1998 and 2000 after coming 

third in 1997 and reached the final a further two times. After losing to the 

Laciga brothers in Getxo, Markus Egger and Sascha Heyer won the 2001 

rematch and went on to claim a third (2003) and a second (2004) place. 

Patrick Heuscher and Stefan Kobel added another three podiums to the 

Swiss tally and also won Switzerland’s sole Olympic medal to date at 

the 2004 Athens Games. Paul Laciga reached the World Championship 

final twice – with his brother in 1999 and with Heyer in 2005, losing to 

Brazilian teams both times. 

The Swiss women have yet to claim an Olympic or World Championship 

podium. Simone Kuhn was involved in all three European-level medals 

– in 2001, she and Nicole Schnyder-Benoit reached the final (they then 

went on to win the 2004 Timmendorf event). Simone Kuhn and Nadine 

Zumkehr scored bronze in 2009 and came third at the 2012 World 

Tour tournament in Gstaad. And at the 2014 European Championships 

in Cagliari (Sardinia), Tanja Goricanec and Tanja Hüberli claimed silver 

for Switzerland. 

Switzerland’s country federation Swiss Volley opened its National Centre 

of Excellence in 2009, with the aim of supporting and promoting the best 

talent and securing the country’s status as one of the top-performing 

nations. 

Siegeszug durch Europa 

Erst Ende der 1980er Jahre kam Beach-Volleyball über den Atlantik so 

richtig nach Europa. Und dann ging es Schlag auf Schlag: 1993 veranstaltete 

die südspanische Stadt Almeria die erste Europameisterschaft. 

Bei den Olympischen Spielen 1996 in Atlanta war Beach-Volleyball erstmals 

als offizielle Disziplin vertreten. Ein Jahr später, 1997, fand die erste 

offizielle Weltmeisterschaft in Los Angeles statt. Spätestens ab diesem 

Zeitpunkt entwickelten die verantwortlichen Verbände immer professionellere 

Strukturen. Die USA und Brasilien dominierten zu Beginn das 

sportliche und kommerzielle Geschehen, nach und nach wuchs aber die 

Konkurrenz weltweit. Deutschland, Australien und China gehörten bald 

auch zu den Medaillengewinnern. Heute werden, neben den offiziellen 

Meisterschaften, weltweit pro Jahr vier sogenannte Major-Turniere sowie 

je sechs Grand-Slams und Opens veranstaltet. 

Erfolgreiche Schweizer Beach-Volleyballszene 

1992 fand in Luzern die erste Schweizermeisterschaft statt, wodurch diese 

Sportart ihren Siegeszug in der Schweiz antrat. Bereits ein Jahr später 

entwickelte sich eine Turnierserie, die in den nächsten Jahren kontinuierlich 

ausgebaut wurde. Seit 1998 ist der Bundesplatz in Bern der feste 

Austragungsort für die Schweizermeisterschaften. 2003 wurde dieses 

Finalturnier ausnahmsweise und medial aufwändig im Zürcher Hauptbahnhof 

veranstaltet. In der Schweiz hat sich Gstaad als Beachvolleyball- 

Hochburg entwickelt. Der noble Ferienort im Saanetal war Gastgeber 

der Weltmeisterschaft 2007 und ist ständiger Austragungsort eines Turniers 

der World Tour (Major-Turnier). 

Die Schweizer Männer sind nach Deutschland die erfolgreichste Nation 

bei Europameisterschaften. Den grössten Anteil an diesem Erfolg gebührt 

wohl den Brüdern Martin und Paul Laciga, die das Turnier von 1998 

bis 2000 dreimal in Folge gewinnen konnten.

From leisure pastime to professional sport 

After its low-key beginnings on the beaches of California, beach 

volleyball was long considered a trendy leisure game, but the 

sport as it is known today is practised by both pro players and 

many keen amateurs. Beach volleyball is in no way restricted to 

natural beaches – it can also be played on sand courts in city 

centres far from the sea. Case in point – the Swiss Alpine resort 

of Gstaad, which lies at more than 1000 metres above sea level, 

hosted the 2007 World Championships. Growing media exposure 

is boosting beach volleyball’s popularity. Many indoor volleyball 

pros now take advantage of the summer recess to play 

on sand. Some are just bridging the gap between the end of the 

season and the start of next season’s preparation phase; others 

enter tournaments with aspirations to win.

Um die Fingersprache hinter dem Rücken der Profis 

zu verstehen, sind ein paar Informationen unerlässlich. 

Jedes Team besteht aus einem Block- und einem 

Abwehrspieler. Der Blockspieler steht am Netz und 

der Abwehrspieler sichert im hinteren Feld. Die linke 

Hand symbolisiert den Gegenspieler, der in der linken 

Courthälfte steht und die rechte Hand entspricht 

dem Gegner, der sich in der rechten Feldhälfte befindet. 

Die Blockerin gibt der Feldabwehr zu verstehen 

wie sie sich im kommenden Spielzug verhalten 

will. Der Abwehrspieler weiss nun, welchen Bereich 

der Blockspieler abdeckt. Damit ist auch für ihn klar, 

welchen Feldabschnitt er sichern muss. Ein gestreckter 

Finger heisst, der Blockspieler deckt die longline- 

Seite ab und der Abwehrspieler muss die Divagonale 

sichern. Zwei gestreckte Finger bedeuten, dass der 

Blockspieler die Diagonale sichert und sein Partner 

entlang der Seitenlinie abdecken muss. 

In order to understand the tactical accords of the professionals 

some information is essential. Each team 

consists of one block and one defence player. The 

block player stands close to the net and the defence 

player covers the backward part of the court. The left 

hand symbolizes the opponent, who is standing on 

the left side of the court and the right hand symbolizes 

the opponent, who is standing on the right side 

of the court. The block player tells the defence player, 

how she will play in the next rally. The defence player 

now knows which part of the court is covered by the 

block player. And therefore he or she will also know 

which part he or she has to cover. A stretched finger 

means that the block player will cover the long line 

side and the defence player has to cover the diagonal 

part. Two stretched fingers mean that the block player 

will cover the diagonal side and his or her partner has 

to cover the long line part of the court.

Spiel, Satz und Sieg: 

- Ein Match geht über zwei Gewinnsätze. 

Die beiden ersten Sätze werden bis 21 Punkte, ein 

möglicher dritter Satz bis 15 Punkte, gespielt. 

- Zum Satzgewinn werden zwei Punkte Vorsprung 

benötigt. Es gibt keine Punktbegrenzung. 

- Nach der Rally-Point-Zählweise führt jeder Ballwechsel 

zu einem Punkt. 

Aufschlag: 

- Das Recht zum Aufschlag erhält der Gewinner des 

vorherigen Ballwechsels. 

- Der Ball darf auch beim Aufschlag die Netzkante 

berühren. 

Angriff und Abwehr: 

- Spätestens mit der dritten Berührung muss der Ball 

ins gegnerische Feld gespielt werden. 

- Die Blockberührung zählt als erste Ballberührung. 

- Ein Spieler darf den Ball nicht zweimal unmittelbar 

hintereinander berühren. Die einzige Ausnahme ist 

der Block. 

Seitenwechsel: 

- Ein Seitenwechsel erfolgt ohne Pause nach jeweils 

7 gespielten Punkten in den ersten beiden Sätzen, 

nach jeweils 5 gespielten Punkten im dritten Satz. 

Auszeiten und Pausen: 

- Die Zeit zwischen den Ballwechseln ist auf max. 12 

Sekunden begrenzt. 

- Pro Team und Satz ist eine Auszeit von 30 Sekunden 

möglich. 

- In den ersten beiden Sätzen erfolgt nach 21 

gespielten Punkten eine technische Auszeit von 30 

Sekunden. 

- Die Pause zwischen zwei Sätzen beträgt 60 Sekunden. 

Verboten: 

- Netzberührungen mit dem Körper sind verboten, 

wenn Sie das Spiel beeinflussen. 

- Der Ball darf weder geworfen noch gehalten 

werden. 

Maße: 

- Netzhöhe: 2,24 Meter bei den Frauen; 

2,43 Meter bei den Männern. 

- Die Gesamtgröße des Feldes beträgt 8 x 16 Meter.

Time-outs and breaks: 

- The time in-between the rallies is limited to a maximum 

of 12 seconds. 

- Each team is entitled to one time-out of 30 seconds 

per set. 

- An additional 30 seconds technical time-out is 

automatically allocated when the sum of the points 

scored by the teams equals 21 points 

- The break between the sets is 60 seconds long. 

Forbidden: 

- Contact with the net by a player is not a fault, 

unless it interferes with the play. 

- The ball may neither be thrown nor held. 

Numbers: 

- Height of the net: 2.24 metres for the women; 2.43 

metres for the men. 

- The total size of the playing area measures 8 x 16

as Luzerner Turnier wagt einen Neustart und hofft auf Tradition. 

Dass man solcherlei nicht alleine und ohne Erfahrung tut, ist 

logisch: Siegbert Brutschin heisst der Erfolgsgarant. Warum der 

Direktor des Grand Slam Turnieres in Berlin im „Lido“ hilft. 

Dieser Erfolg ist auf Sand gebaut. Quarzsand, um es genau zu nehmen. 

Tausend Tonnen werden aus dem Raum Süddeutschland herangeführt 

und auf der Lidowiese verbaut. Darauf lässt sich etwas konstruieren. 200 

Spiele zum Beispiel. Während den sechs Turniertagen hechten, smashen 

und blocken die Athletinnen und Athleten. Sie tanzen mit dem Ball. Aber 

ohne den Sand unter ihren Füssen würde es nicht gehen. Nur, niemand 

wird dies sehen, niemand wird daran einen Gedanken verschwenden. 

Wäre die Unterlage jedoch nicht bereit, dann wäre sie ein grosses Thema. 

So verhält es sich mit der Arbeit des Turnierdirektors Siegbert Brutschin. 

Der ehemalige ostdeutsche Spitzenhandballer ist mit seinem Team für all 

das zuständig, das sich den Zuschauerblicken entzieht. Ein kompliziertes 

Geflecht an Aufgaben und Verantwortungen wartet auf ihn. Man möchte 

nicht jeden seiner Aktionsbereiche auflisten, diese Tabelle würde jedes 

Turniermagazin füllen. Weil es in der Realität nicht von alleine geht, muss 

Siegbert ran, «Siggi», wie man ihn nennt, die geballte Erfahrung, wenn 

es um das Organisieren und die operative Leitung von volleyballerischen 

Grossanlässen geht. 

Turniere quer durch Europa designt 

«Siggi» hat es 1994 als ehemaliger Chef der Volleyball-Abteilung des 

SC Dynamo Berlin als einziger gewagt, in der nachmaligen deutschen 

Hauptstadt ein innerstädtisches Beachvolley-Turnier auf die Beine zu 

stellen. Was daraus geworden ist, wissen die Fans dieser Sportart: Eines 

der führenden Turniere im weltweiten Kalender. Berlin eben. 2005 

“Siggi” – or a winner’s expertise

The Lucerne tournament is relaunching and has its sights set on tradition. 

But a solo attempt without outside expertise just wouldn’t make 

sense. Enter “secret weapon” Siegbert Brutschin. We find out why the 

director of the Berlin Grand Slam has agreed to lend a hand at the Lido. 

This success is built on sand – silica sand, to be precise. A thousand tons 

are being brought from southern Germany and installed at the Lido, 

providing an excellent foundation to build something upon – 200 matches 

for instance. Athletes will be diving, spiking and blocking during 

the five-day event – they’ll be dancing with the ball. All of this would not 

be possible without the sand beneath their feet. But no one will notice 

the surface and no one will spare it a single thought – but it would soon 

become a major issue if it were not ready. 

This also sums up the work of the tournament’s director Siegbert Brutschin. 

The former elite handball player for East Germany and his team 

are responsible for everything that takes place behind the scenes. 

There’s a complex network of tasks and challenges waiting for him. We 

cannot list them all here – they would fill an entire tournament magazine 

alone. And because things don’t run themselves, it’s time to call Siegbert 

– or “Siggi”, as he’s known – who can draw from a wealth of experience 

when it comes to the organization and operational management of major 

volleyball events. 

Shaping European events 

As head of volleyball at Dynamo Berlin, Siggi was the only person who 

dared to get a city centre beach volleyball event up and running in 

Germany’s future capital. That was in 1994. Fans of the sport will know 

what happened next – it became one of the major fixtures in the global 

calendar, peaking in 2005 with the World Championships featuring 96 

teams – a gigantic event that propelled beach volleyball into new spheres. 

And now Siggi has come to Lucerne Lido. He says speed will be 

of the essence: “You could say we are building an urban infrastructure

gipfelte die Sache vorübergehend in den Weltmeisterschaften mit 96 

Equipen, einem gigantischen Event, der die attraktive Sportart in neue 

Dimensionen führte. Nun ist «Siggi» in Luzern. Auf der Lidowiese. Er 

spricht von einem «Tempo-Anlass»: «Wir bauen gewissermassen eine 

Stadtstruktur im Niemandsland. Strom, Wasser, Essen, Kommunikation, 

vieles mehr muss für Athleten, Zuschauer und Medien herangeschafft 

werden.» Der Event-Organisator, der Turniere quer durch Europa designt 

und durchgestanden hat, freut sich auf Luzern: «Wir hoffen, hier ein 

echtes Highlight zu schaffen. Natürlich ist es schwierig, beim ersten Mal 

auf den Punkt bereits alles richtig zu machen – aber wir versuchen es.» 

Man sieht die Jahre der Erfahrung dem energetisch geladenen Mann 

nicht an. 62 ist er, im Kopf aber deutlich jünger. Noch immer schwingen 

die Gefühle mit aus der Zeit, als er mit Freunden an den Ostseestränden 

der ehemaligen DDR durch den Sand flog und Bälle übers Netz chipte. 

«Wir haben jedes Mal um einen Kasten Bier gespielt und ihn dann mit 

den Verlierern gemeinsam getrunken», erzählt er von den Sommern in 

Heringsdorf, Zinnowitz oder Baabe. Die Zeiten liegen weit zurück – und 

doch nicht. Etwas von diesem Flair ist geblieben. Brutschin scheint es 

im Beachvolleyball und im von ihm gewollten Ambiente seiner Anlässe 

wiederzufinden. 

Begeistert von der Lidowiese und von Luzern 

Dass er auf der Reise nun in Luzern Halt macht, ist ebenfalls der Vergangenheit 

geschuldet. «Siggi» war schon hier. Vor sieben Jahren hat er mit 

der damaligen, inzwischen untergegangenen europäischen Tournee im 

Lido Halt gemacht. Es habe ihm sehr gut gefallen, «icke hatte Spass», 

lässt er mit typisch Berlinerischer Schnauze ausrichten. Darum würde 

es übrigens in erster Linie gehen: Den Menschen Freude bereiten, den 

Zuschauenden etwas Gutes tun und Spass geben. Oder wie es «Siggi» 

sagt: «Irgendwo wollen wir bei allen die Glückshormone herausjucken.» 

Obwohl das Luzerner Turnier nicht als sein einfachstes in seinen ganz 

eigenen Erfahrungskalender eingehen und mehr noch als teures, durch 

Schweizer Einkaufspreise erschwertes Unterfangen in Erinnerung bleiben 

wird, ist «Siggi» Brutschin jetzt schon begeistert vom Ort des neuen 

Boutique-Turniers. «Wenn ich auf der Lidowiese stehe, den See sehe, 

die Stadt, diese ganze Kulisse, dann kriege ich immer wieder Gänsehaut. 

Dies hier ist schon ein sehr schöner Flecken auf der Erde.» Zum grossen 

Glück fehle nur das Meer, sagt «Siggi», der Beachvolleyballer der Ostseeküste. 

Aber Meer habe Berlin ja auch nicht und sei trotzdem der Ort, 

an dem er leben wolle. Ein Berliner halt.

par excellence who has shaped and seen through events the length 

and breadth of Europe, he is excited about the Lucerne tournament: 

“We’re hoping to create a real highlight. Of course it isn’t easy to get 

everything exactly right the first time, but we’re certainly going to try.” 

His appearance belies the years of experience he has under his belt. 

Despite being 62, he possesses the mind of a much younger man. The 

times when he’d dive over the sand, chipping balls over the net with his 

friends on the Baltic Sea beaches of the former German Democratic Republic 

still resonate. “We always played for a case of beer, which we then 

drank with the losers,” he reminisces about summers spent in Heringsdorf, 

Zinnowitz or Baabe. Those days are long gone, and yet a remnant 

of this atmosphere lingers in the ambiance that Siggi finds in his events 

and beach volleyball in general.

A big fan of Lucerne and its Lido 

It is past experience that has lured Siggi to Lucerne. He’s been here 

before: seven years ago, when Lucerne Lido was a stage on the now 

defunct European Tour. It was great fun, he says, expressing himself with 

the characteristic directness of a Berlin native. And that is what it is all 

about, in his opinion – fun and entertainment. Or, to paraphrase Siggi: 

“We want to get those happy hormones pumping.” 

Siggi Brutschin is excited about the new boutique tournament, despite 

the fact that this event won’t go down as one of his simplest to organize 

– and is certainly going to be one of the most expensive due to the 

high level of costs in Switzerland. “Standing at the Lido and looking out 

over the lake, the city and its scenic backdrop gives me goose bumps 

every time,” he says. “This is a seriously beautiful spot.” The only thing 

missing, says Siggi the beach volleyball player from the Baltic Coast, is 

the sea. That said, there’s no sea in Berlin and it’s still the place he calls 

home. Once a Berliner, always a Berliner.
