A centre for style
Vorzeigeprojekt moderner Verkaufsphilosophie.
Reich an Perspektiven: Das Stilwerk in Wien
verblüfft architektonisch, mit begrünten Wänden
und der Unternehmensphilosophie der Mieter.
A wealth of perspectives: stilwerk Vienna is an
architectural thing of beauty with landscaped walls
and the entrepreneurial spirit of its shop owners.
A lot has been written, debated and speculated about
the new design centre at Praterstrasse 1 in Vienna.
The architectural masterpiece from Jean Nouvel is
becoming a model of modern sales philosophy.
S
In seiner Manufaktur in Nepal
S
ince its grand opening in
december of 2010, all eyes
have been on the Stilwerk
design centre on the danube
canal (donaukanal) in Vienna.
This is where design is lived to its
fullest and competition is a foreign
concept. customers profit
from each store staff’s expansive
knowledge of the products and
from decorating ideas from many
different areas of design. The first
Stilwerk store outside of Germany
has taken on a regional identity that
benefits tourists, fans of architecture
and design, and buyers alike.
Art and commerce
After two years of construction, the
finished building has 6,000 square
metres of space dedicated to diversity
in design. For the store’s manager,
Sina Morcinek, the artistic aspect
of the building is what separates
the Vienna location from those in
Hamburg, Berlin and düsseldorf.
The uncompromising implementation
of French star architect Jean
Nouvel’s design, with its diamond
patterned elements serving as an
homage to St. Stephen’s cathedral,
the installations by the artist
Pipilotti Rist, and the vertical garden
by Patrick Blanc constantly
give shoppers something new to
discover. At present, they can take
a walk through Verdarium’s urban
Jungle, with interior landscaping by
the Viennese nursery Starkl. And
here’s a sneak peak at the highlights
in autumn: the photo exhibition
‘Amazons – An Homage to Strong
Women’ and the Recycling design
Prize exhibition during the Vienna
design Week. Stilwerk newcomer
Rolf Benz will also be opening his
doors shortly.
You live longer if you’ve been
given up for dead
“Anything that’s been around for
less than a year in Vienna gets
criticised to death,” says Arman J.
Varian, giving his own frank appraisal
of the Viennese mentality.
He couldn’t imagine a better place
to showcase his hand-woven carpets
from Nepal. The one-of-akind
atmosphere gives him plenty
of space to present his array of
carpets, which received the 2011
award for Best contemporary design
for Handmade Rugs – deLuxe.
Newly available in natural fibres such
as nettle, hemp, linen and silk in
intensely colourful asymmetrical
designs, the carpets’ numerous knots
require hours of tedious labour.
It took a team of three weavers a
whole day to make one centimetre
of progress on the March 2012 special
collection, for example, which
the graphic artist Andreas Reimann
helped to design. Varian, who runs
the third-generation family com-
pany, knows his business: “Someday
soon, weaving carpets by hand is
going to be designated a World
Heritage activity.” The loss of qualified
weavers and rising production
costs have caused people’s respect
for weavers to grow. And there is
also no question of work on these
high-quality products being done
by children since weavers need at
least five to ten years of experience
to be considered for the job. In his
production facility in Nepal, he
employs 600 workers. With stores
in Melbourne, Singapore, Beirut,
Toronto and Istanbul, his success
around the world has been fuelled
by his own intuition and his constant
contact with his customers.
70 percent of all his products are
special orders. customers place the
carpets most often in dining, sleeping
and living areas. depending on
the customer’s individual style, they
can serve to create accents or harmony.
Varian, who can tell whether
a carpet was air-dried in the summer
or the winter, has a good eye
for design trends.
Theory and practice
And for the landscape architects
from Verdarium, Nora Stalzer
and clemens Lutz, it was also
important to have a particular
spot for their store. For the two
outdoor design specialists, it was
clear from the beginning that they
could best express their ideas on
the building’s green wall flanked by
two outdoor patios. Incorporating
Jean Nouvel’s colour concept, they
created a soft transition into their
shop. As the store’s main structuring
element, they used euro-pallets in
order to be as flexible as possible
when they need adapt the floor
space for another use. Stalzer likes
to keep things simple. Not only
is her background in architecture
and painting a pervasive influence,
but also her love for projects. Since
the store opened, it has provided a
stage for guest lectures, press conferences
and chess tournaments.
In three short years, she and her
Unbekannte Vielfalt
Unknown diversity
The artistically inclined PR expert
Karin Lebinger and the awardwinning
designer Franz Maurer
have made it their mission to gently
broaden their shoppers’ horizons.
Their design galerie_the shop is a
bastion of creativity where shoppers
are invited to linger indefinitely, tak-
fascinating talks. Both Maurer and
Lebinger, whose name is synonymous
with the christmas market at the
Loos House in Vienna, see themselves
as “old hands who get a
kick out of staying one step ahead
of the crowd.” Behind their banter
lies a genuine enthusiasm for brands
that otherwise wouldn’t be available
in Austria and a network of
contacts established over years of
friendship with different designers.
They pride themselves on providing
a stage for social projects, unknown
Austrian designers and exotic antiques.
‘Original’ and ‘functional’
are the watchwords that define
the range of products they offer,
like the valet stand from Sideby-
Michaela Hocek
They also offer personalised corporate
gifts that can be made individually
or with a company’s corporate
identity in mind. In autumn, they
will begin selling the timelessly classic
chairs from the czech furniture
manufacturer Ton along with surprises
that focus on the theme of
When all is said and done,
Stilwerk is well worth a visit. It offers
a unique platform for the free
flow of artistic thought and an opportunity
for business owners to
work together – something untypi-
Möbelverkäufer. der gelernte Tischler, HTL-Absolvent und Master of design weiß, was
Franz Pernleitner, Bretz GM and manager of the flagship store in Vienna, is more than a
furniture salesman. A carpenter by trade, the vocational school graduate with a Master’s
degree in design knows exactly what is possible in planning and executing interior
designs – and why Stilwerk is the ideal location.
Unverkennbarer Solitär oder
Kollektionen von Bretz lässt es
sich hervorragend „chillen“.
unmistakable solitary pieces or modular
systems: the creative collections
from bretz are the perfect chill zones.
Sofasurfer vom Hocker rissen. Die Idee, sich aus unzähligen
Einzelkomponenten ein persönliches Stück kreieren zu können,
ist noch heute gültig.
What makes Bretz different from
other furniture makers?
Bretz makes unique use of the visual
language of form, putting home
furnishings in a completely new
context. A typical Bretz customer
isn’t looking for a compromise
with home furnishings. He either
goes with neutral or wild: brown
saddle leather or a colourful fabric
in houndstooth check. And we
don’t compromise on design and
quality either. When our customers
re-upholster their furniture after ten
years, they do so not because the
fabric has worn thin but because
their tastes have changed.
Is there a typical Bretz customer?
Not really. Our customers range
from a twenty-five-year-old who’s
just bought his first apartment to
a seventy-year-old who wants to
completely redecorate his house.
Our sofas start at around 2,000
euros. But once you start looking
at the different options and the
popular modular systems, the sky’s
the limit.
How does Bretz like being in
Stilwerk in Vienna?
It’s a design centre with an international
flair. Bretz is definitely well
positioned there. My idea was to
set up our 220 square metres like
a theatre stage. Sofas, beds and
Founded in 1895, bretz initially produced metal and wire products,
before moving on to mattresses and then furniture. in 1995, the bretz
off sofa surfers across europe with their zebra-print fabrics, opulent
able to create one’s own personal piece of furniture out of countless
different components is an idea that is still popular today.
