Kaum ein Land könnte auf der musikalischen
Landkarte Deutschland näher liegen als Russland.
Im zweiten Jahr von Young Euro Classic war die
Einladung eines russischen Orchesters auch ein
Schritt, der schon ein wenig weiter in die Welt hinaus
ging. Seitdem ist Russland regelmäßig zu Gast
bei Young Euro Classic – und mit hervorragender
musikalischer Qualität auch immer einer der Publikumsrenner.
Das hat uns 2005 erstmalig zu einem
ganz besonderen Projekt inspiriert: zwei große
Musiknationen in einem gemeinsamen Young Euro
Classic Festivalorchester zusammen zu bringen.
Damals war noch kaum abzusehen, dass sowohl
das Konzept der Festivalorchester, als auch die
russisch-deutsche Zusammenarbeit zu Konstanten
bei Young Euro Classic heranwachsen sollten.
There is hardly a country that is located closer to
Germany on the musical map than Russia. In the
second year of Young Euro Classic, our invitation to
a Russian orchestra to perform at the festival was
already a step into new musical terrain. Since then
Russia has been a regular guest at Young Euro Classic
– and, thanks to the outstanding qualities of its individual
musicians, a major crowd-puller. It was only
natural, therefore, that in 2005 we were inspired to
create a very special new project to bring these two
great musical nations closer together in a joint Young
Euro Classic Festival Orchestra. At the time, we could
hardly have guessed that both the concept of festival
orchestras and Russian-German cooperation would
become standard features of Young Euro Classic.
In 2009 the Young Euro Classic Festival Ensemble
2009 fand sich an einem der wohl prominentesten

Russland – Deutschland zusammen. Im Herzen Moskaus,
am Roten Platz im GUM entdeckten Musiker
aus den Musikhochschulen Berlins und Münchens
gemeinsam mit Studenten des Tschaikowski-Konservatoriums
Moskau musikalisch lange Verschollenes
wieder. Werke deutscher und russischer Komponisten,
die in den revolutionären Wirren der 20er
Jahre verloren gingen, wurden in einen Dialog mit
zeitgenössischen russischen und deutschen Werken
gestellt. Eine Zusammenarbeit mit Zukunft.
Und die nahm schon mal ungewöhnliche Formen
an, wie beim Festivalensemble Russland – Deutschland
im August 2009: An den Pulten saßen wie
immer die Musiker. Doch dort, wo in der Regel das
Schlagwerk steht, stand – nichts… doch, ein Kochtopf,
ein Notenständer und ein leeres Wasserglas.
Können Kochtöpfen Töne entlockt, auf Alufolie Musik
gemacht werden? Das Festivalensemble Russland
– Deutschland bewies, dass es noch viel mehr
kann. Auf Initiative von Young Euro Classic traf sich
die Elite der Neuen Musik in Berlin: Musiker des Studios
für Neue Musik Moskau und der Internationalen
Ensemble Modern Akademie Frankfurt. Erstmalig
widmeten sie bei Young Euro Classic einen ganzen
Abend der Neuen Musik – „Hören ohne Anstrengung“
titelte die Berliner Zeitung.

Russia – Germany met to play together in one of
the most historic locations imaginable. In the heart
of Moscow, at Red Square, in the legendary GUM
department store, music students from Berlin and
Munich joined forces with their counterparts from
Moscow’s Tchaikovsky Conservatory to rediscover
some long-lost music history. Works by German and
Russian composers that had gone missing during the
massive revolutionary upheavals of the 1920s were
brought together in a musical dialogue with contemporary
pieces by Russian and German composers.
Truly, a cooperation with a future!
And that future took on unusual shape and form. In
August 2009, the musicians of the Festival Ensemble
Russia – Germany took their places on the stage
as usual. But right were you would normally look to
find the percussion section: nothing. Well, not quite.
Because there was a cooking pot, a music stand, and
an empty water glass. Can cooking pots be used to
make music? And what about aluminium foil? Well,
the Festival Ensemble Russia – Germany certainly
proved that it could handle these and other rather
unusual ‘instruments’. And it was on the initiative of
Young Euro Classic that the elite of New Music met
in Berlin: musicians from the Studio for New Music
in Moscow and the International Ensemble Modern
Academy from Frankfurt. For the first time, Young
Euro Classic dedicated a whole evening to New Music
– “Listening not labour” wrote the Berliner Zeitung.
