In Indien ein Projekt auf die Beine zu stellen, das
klassische europäische Musik in sich trägt – so
wurde uns von Landeskennern versichert –, sei nicht
möglich. Denn Indien hat eine starke eigene Tradition
klassischer Musik. Europäische Klassik ist dagegen
noch so gut wie unbekannt. Aber genau dort setzte
Young Euro Classic in Indien an – und wurde ein
voller Erfolg. Zwei große klassische Musiktraditionen
traten in den Dialog, und wie bei Young Euro Classic
bewährt: auch die jungen indischen und deutschen
Musiker. Denn neben Künstlern von der Folkwang
Universität ergänzten junge Inder aus dem India
Youth Orchestra die Formation. „Eine großartige
Gelegenheit und entscheidende Förderung unserer
noch jungen Initiative“, nannte dies Vijay Upadhyaya,
der Gründer dieses Orchesters. Er war es auch, unter
dessen Dirigat das neu entstandene Young Euro
Classic Orchester Deutschland-Indien schließlich auf
großer Bühne konzertierte.
In Anwesenheit der Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel
und der indischen Parlamentspräsidentin Meira
Kumar gestaltete das Young Euro Classic Orchester
Deutschland-Indien am 31. Mai 2011 in Delhi die
Eröffnung des Deutschlandjahres „Infinite Opportunities“
in Indien. Anlass dieser Veranstaltungsreihe ist
das 60jährige Bestehen der diplomatischen Beziehungen
zwischen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland
und der Republik Indien. Das Konzert repräsentierte
programmatisch beispielhaft den deutsch-indischen
Austausch – das Kennenlernen des jeweils anderen
Kulturraums. Denn geboten wurde ein Programm,
das den Reichtum der beiden großen Musiktraditionen
vereinte: Zwischen Mendelssohns „Meeresstille
und glückliche Fahrt“ und Beethovens 8. Symphonie
trat eine Improvisation von Dhrupad-Meistern in den
Dialog mit der europäischen Klassik. Young Euro
Classic Indien – ein erfolgreiches Projekt, bei dem
große Musiktraditionen echte Entdeckungen waren.

It is simply not possible! That is what people who
know the country well told us when we came up with
the idea of setting up a project in India that would
feature western classical music. After all, it was argued,
India has a very strong musical tradition of its
own and European classical music is still largely unknown
in the country. But all this was only an added
incentive for Young Euro Classic to get involved in
India – and with considerable success. Two great
classical music traditions entered into a dialogue
with each other and the focus of that dialogue was,
as always with Young Euro Classic, on young musicians.

Youth Orchestra. “An outstanding opportunity and
an excellent way to promote our initiative, which is
still in its early days,” said Vijay Upadhyaya, the
founder of IYO, who was also the conductor when
the newly-created Young Euro Classic Orchestra
Germany – India stepped out on stage to perform.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Speaker
of the India Parliament Meira Kumar were both in
attendance in Delhi on 31st May 2011 when the
Young Euro Classic Orchestra Germany – India
gave the opening concert of “Infinite Opportunities”
– Germany and India 2011-2012. This programme
of events was specially designed to celebrate sixty
years of diplomatic ties between the two countries
and the concert was a perfect example of the
cultural exchange and interaction between Germany
and India. The concert programme reflected the
immensely rich musical traditions of each country:
between Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous
Voyage and Beethoven’s 8th Symphony masters of
the classical Indian vocal music known as Dhrupad
staged an improvised dialogue with the European
tradition. Young Euro Classic India – a successful
project and a journey of discovery into great musical
traditions.
