Aus der Tradition,
für die Zukunft
Born out of tradition,
for the future
Dr. Dieter Rexroth, Künstlerischer Leiter Artistic Director
Berlin’s summer music festival Young Euro Classic
is a celebration of the musical youth of Europe, of
the world. As a festival of youth orchestras, it is
also a forum for a musical scene that has in recent
years achieved growing significance in the world
of music. Young musicians always exercise a very
special fascination, combining as they do great professionalism
with unrestrained enthusiasm, as well
as the joy of young men and women making music
and demonstrating their talents, skills and musical
vivacity. All of which makes for high-quality concert
experiences. But the joy of playing in an orchestra
means more still: it is without doubt a unique and
uniquely valuable process that brings the members
of the ensemble together in a profound shared
striving for something outstanding. An orchestra
provides the perfect backdrop for encounters and
Werthaftigkeit: Das Orchester stiftet Gemeinschaft
friendship. And, above all, it fosters mutual respect.
There is at the heart of orchestral musicianship
a key principle of humanity: orchestras stand for
solidarity and partnership. The orchestra is the
source of sounds that move us, of musical motifs
that touch us, and of musical narratives that plastically
and tangibly manifest the common identity
of the orchestra and express this concretely in a
concert experience that is shared by the audience
and the broader public. The orchestra, an invention
of the European Enlightenment, has written its own
remarkable history – a global history. Countless
masterpieces represent the milestones along this
road. This is above all due to the fact that both
orchestras and orchestral music open up a broad
horizon of experience that encompasses all human,
that is to say all societal, themes regardless of
national or religious differences. The love that
young musicians feel for the great works of the
past, their huge passion, their creative commitment,
the great resolve expressed in their “musical will” –
these are signals for the hope and confidence that
we can all share in these young men and women.
This is the mission of Young Euro Classic.
