viewership, web series defy the limitations of more traditional formats.<br />

Casting director, producer, director and writer Katja Blichfeld and actor<br />

and producer Ben Sinclair will show episodes from their cult web series<br />

HIGH MAINTENANCE and discuss how the web series format is conducive<br />

for testing new ideas as well as production and distribution models<br />

rather free from the structures of classic filmmaking.<br />

How is it possible to look back into history, expose inconvenient truth<br />

and revive the personal memories of those who have been part of it<br />

Lauded director Joshua Oppenheimer (THE LOOK OF SILENCE) joins<br />

documentary film virtuoso Marcel Ophüls (THE MEMORY OF JUSTICE)<br />

for an in-depth discussion on the expressions of remembrance,<br />

performance and memory in their films. They will address the search for<br />

truth in the aftermath of history’s darkest episodes, as well as how they<br />

create and preserve cinematic spaces in their films that ensure dignity<br />

and respect for the protagonists and their often traumatic experiences.<br />

Help, I've done a great short film! Producers, festival programmers and<br />

distributors, all passionately dedicated to the short form, talk about the<br />

different ways to present your short film. This panel will consider the<br />

reasons for and advantages of making a short, how to create a unique<br />

buzz and find the right presentation context and how to make the most<br />

out of your film through distribution, sales, festivals, etc. In cooperation<br />

HIGH SEASON: SERIAL STORYTELLING AND PRODUCING<br />

Accomplished television and film producer Paul Trijbits (FISH TANK) will<br />

dive into familiar depths and unveil the methods and workflows of serial<br />

storytelling and producing. Trijbits will welcome the masterminds behind<br />

German series DEUTSCHLAND 83: producing and scriptwriting team Jörg<br />

and Anna Winger and show-runner and film director Edward Berger<br />

(JACK). After a short intermission Trijbits welcomes Antony Root, HBO<br />

Europe (UMBRE), and Roberto Amoroso, Sky Italia (1992) and teacher at<br />

“Serial Eyes,” a Berlin-based post-grad course on TV writing and<br />

producing. In conversation together and with the audience, the experts<br />

will talk about developing and launching drama series, as well as how to<br />

create identity and build communities for your projects. In cooperation<br />

Howard Shore.<br />

Star composer Howard Shore has achieved worldwide renown for his<br />

work on such films as HUGO and THE AVIATOR, THE LORD OF THE RINGS,<br />

SE7EN and THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. He has scored 15 films by David<br />

Cronenberg, including MAPS TO THE STARS. Recipient of three Academy<br />

Awards and multiple Golden Globes and Grammies, Shore will elaborate<br />

on how sound and score shape the visual onscreen cinematic world and<br />

the spaces in which stories unfold. He'll also shed light on the working<br />

relationship between director and composer, as well as how sound<br />

and music can create a “meta space” between the works of a trilogy or<br />

ROOM FOR EMOTIONS: EMBODYING ARCHITECTURE IN FILM<br />

In the films of Joanna Hogg, relationships and family structures play out<br />

in and are heavily influenced by architectural spaces and landscapes.<br />

Showing excerpts from Hogg’s latest drama, EXHIBITION, Berlin-based<br />

architect Matthias Sauerbruch and Hogg take the stage to explore the<br />

dialogue between film and architecture and how living spaces can<br />

emerge as personified forces in a film.<br />

Everyone involved in the filmmaking process, from directors and<br />

producers to distributors and sales agents, should know the laws behind<br />

the ownership of the films they work on. Get clear explanations and<br />

advice from industry law experts. They will address the rights clearances<br />

that are necessary at different steps of the creative process. Also to be<br />

discussed is how to keep in mind international perspectives and the<br />

SPACE INVADERS<br />

Having already tried to save the world, The Yes Men are back, and this<br />

time, they are revolting! Armed with anger, humor, a camera and<br />

performance, The Yes Men have lifted guerilla filmmaking to new heights<br />

with their activistic and often slapstick interventions. The Yes Men unite<br />

onstage with director and producer Laura Nix to discuss how they made<br />

their new film, THE YES MEN ARE REVOLTING. They will lay bare their<br />

guerilla tactics and explain how to hack into both public and private<br />

spaces and get footage working with minimal tech and crew. Further<br />

they will highlight the kinds of preparation and legal clearances that are<br />

required when shooting under the radar with unsuspecting subjects and<br />

in uncontrolled settings. This time taking on climate change and the<br />

policies and corporations that exacerbate the crisis, the filmmakers will<br />

discuss the responsibilities and aims of political and activist filmmaking.<br />

How can handed-down knowledge about storytelling be adopted to<br />

develop exceptional narrative film worlds This truly intercontinental<br />

panel will immerse into cultural spaces in Africa, Latin America and<br />

India to discover the stories that are rooted there. Filmmakers and<br />

screenwriters will discuss how their cinematic work has been inspired<br />

by the narrative structures from their own or other people’s cultural<br />

Executive director of the Israel Film Fund and longtime film producer<br />

Katriel Schory will moderate international producers on the current<br />

challenges in film producing, highlighting new business models and<br />

to the poster,” where can producers diverge and impact their projects<br />

for the better With regard to an ever-changing industry landscape, how<br />

do the responsibilities of producer and distributor increasingly overlap<br />

WINGS OF TIME: A CONVERSATION WITH WIM WENDERS<br />

Wim Wenders.<br />

Subject of <strong>Berlinale</strong> Homage and recipient of an honorary Golden Bear<br />

for lifetime achievement, legendary German auteur Wim Wenders will<br />

take the stage to discuss his work. A lauded figure in the New German<br />

Cinema generation of the 1970s, Wenders went on to rack up top festival<br />

prizes for seminal films like PARIS, TEXAS, WINGS OF DESIRE and<br />

THE STATE OF THINGS. His recent works PINA, THE SALT OF THE EARTH<br />

and in this year’s Competition EVERY THING WILL BE FINE cement his<br />

reputation as one of the most influential auteur filmmakers working<br />

today. Wenders will elaborate on his career, his experiences working<br />

across various genres and international settings and what it means to<br />

stay on the vanguard of filmmaking. In cooperation with Deutsche<br />

ENDLESS SPACE: BODY MOVEMENT BEYOND LIMITS<br />

Sandra Bullock’s graceful floating and swimming through space in<br />

Alfonso Cuarón’s GRAVITY remains one of the most memorable images<br />

from last year’s cinema experience. In conversation with acting coach<br />

Jean-Louis Rodrigue, movement coach Francesca Jaynes and puppeteer<br />

Mikey Brett, both of whom worked with Bullock to simulate the<br />

character’s unfolding ordeal in weightlessness in zero gravity, will offer<br />

their perspectives on the movement of actors in cinematic space.<br />

THE DOLBY ATMOS MASTER CLASS<br />

This public master class will offer theoretical and technical insights<br />

into the practical applications of Dolby® Atmos technology. The<br />

Dolby® Atmos Policy Trailer, composed as part of the Sound Studio<br />

2014 will be presented for the first time. Also the three selected sound<br />

scapes from this year’s Sound Studio will be presented and the winner<br />

will be announced. A case study on the <strong>Berlinale</strong> trailer in 7.1/Dolby®<br />

Atmos made by Rotor Film Babelsberg and extracts from Dolby®Atmos<br />

Innovative forms, fresh perspectives and local stories from across<br />

the globe are supported by the World Cinema Fund. Independent<br />

productions from regions with little access to funding, such as Latin<br />

America, Africa, the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia and the<br />

Caucasus, are its focus. Project manager Vincenzo Bugno discusses the<br />

aims of the initiative and the breadth of works and regions considered<br />

and explains how filmmakers can apply with their projects.<br />

Film is truly a universal language and medium, but that is not to say<br />

that there are not daunting obstacles to overcome when bringing<br />

films from their local birthplaces to international audiences. Bong<br />

Joon-Ho, South Korean director of THE HOST and celebrated lately<br />

for his first English language film SNOWPIERCER, and renowned Asian<br />

producer Lorna Tee (POSTCARDS FROM THE ZOO) bring their rich<br />

experiences in making films that are successful for both local and<br />

international markets to this discussion.<br />

OF WALLS AND WONDERS<br />

The collapse of the Berlin Wall and the GDR was followed by a brief<br />

moment in Eastern Germany where space seemed unlimited and<br />

free dom was an ideal to be tested and lived to the fullest. The feelings<br />

experienced form the background for AS WE WERE DREAMING, the<br />

<strong>Berlinale</strong> Competition entry directed by Andreas Dresen and adapted<br />

for the screen by Wolfgang Kohlhaase from the bestselling novel by<br />

Clemens Meyer. Representing three generations that personally<br />

experienced this electric time in the East, they will describe their<br />

process of adapting from memory to novel to screen a very loaded<br />

historical moment that lingers in the space of imagination of many<br />

JOINT FORCES: LAURA POITRAS ON HER FILMS<br />

With her recently released portrait of Edward Snowden, Laura Poitras<br />

has rounded up her trilogy of documentaries depicting the plight of<br />

people who have been impacted by the policies of the US govern -<br />

ment’s War on Terror. Laura Poitras (CITIZENFOUR) joins Talents<br />

from New York for an interactive webcam session to discuss her role<br />

as a documentarian over the years and her relationships to her films<br />

and protagonists as they ignite wildfire buzz amongst audiences<br />

worldwide.<br />
