This seminar will give an overview of recent approaches to the internal structure of the large Bantu language family<br />
of Niger-Congo. After a closer look at Southern Bantu languages and their typological characteristics in general, we<br />
will deal with the characteristics and position of some individual languages of the Nguni and Western Savanna<br />
groups of Southern Bantu.<br />

The course aims at giving some insights as to how modern Swahili literature evolved and how it has developed and<br />
assumed the status it has to date. Using factors like the introduction of colonial education, the introduction of Western<br />
media technology and infrastructure, the influence and effect of language policies in Kenya and Tanzania regarding<br />
Swahili and other ethnic languages in East Africa and the teaching of Swahili and its literature in schools<br />
and colleges, the course is set to examine the themes and styles of modern Swahili literature.<br />
