What would our everyday life look like without writing None of us who live in literate societies today can really imagine<br />
what it would be like to exist in complete absence of literate culture. Even if we were ourselves illiterate and<br />
therefore unable to participate in reading and writing activities, our lives would still be influenced by the presence<br />
and the possibilities of the cultural technique of writing. This course will focus on the development of writing systems<br />
around the world, the socio-dynamics of orality and literacy, the historical development of writing in Britain, principles<br />
of English spelling, the role of orthography in language standardization, spelling reforms, learning to read and write,<br />
Social dimensions of present-day writing as well as on formal and functional changes of writing in the age of electronic<br />
media.<br />
It is not necessary to register for this class.<br />

Do all languages have pronouns Or terms for colours or body parts How widespread are word order patterns like<br />
SVO in comparison to others Does the majority of languages have gender as a grammatical category The study<br />
of language universals and linguistic typology looks at linguistic patterns that are shared by all natural languages in<br />
the world versus others that are highly unique to a language or language group. In this course, we will compare<br />
features in phonology, syntax, morphology and lexicon across various languages by means of tools such as the<br />
World Atlas of Language Structures (WALS). We will also explore topical issues like the interaction between linguistic<br />
universals and language-specific properties in the development of second language (L2) grammar. This course is<br />
particularly relevant for the preparation for the Staatsexamen.<br />

This course provides an opportunity for BA, LA and MA students to prepare and discuss their final thesis projects<br />
(Bachelorarbeit, Zulassungsarbeit für die Erste Staatsprüfung, MA-Thesis) in English linguistics. BA and MA<br />
students may also use this class to prepare their oral and written exam topics. Note: this is not the Repetitorium for<br />
the preparation of the written exam for the Staatsexamen (see separate Übung for this)!<br />

Beginn des Seminars: 15.04.<strong>2013</strong><br />
In diesem Hauptseminar werden in Anbindung an fachdidaktische Theorien Unterrichts-entwürfe zu einem breiten<br />
Themenspektrum erstellt und kritisch beleuchtet. Dabei werden wissenschaftliche Grundlagen (Handlungsorientierung,<br />
TBL, Prozesse, die bei verschiedenen language skills ablaufen, Literaturdidaktik, Mediendidaktik etc.) zugrunde<br />
gelegt.<br />
Anforderungen: Bereitschaft zur aktiven, kritischen Mitarbeit, Erstellen und Vorstellen eines Unterrichtsentwurfes<br />
und eine Hausarbeit (=schriftliche Ausarbeitung des Unterrichts-entwurfes mit Anbindung an den Lehrplan desselben<br />
auf der Grundlage wissenschaftlicher Theorien. (6 LP). Hinweis: Dieses Seminar kann auch als Wahlseminar<br />
belegt werden (ohne Hausarbeit, 4 LP)<br />

In dem Seminar wird auf zentrale Aspekte des bilingualen Lehrens und Lernens fokussiert. Ferner stehen methodische<br />
und didaktische Überlegungen des bilingualen Unterrichts im Zentrum und es werden Möglichkeiten erarbeitet,<br />
wie bilingualer Unterricht adäquat umgesetzt werden kann.<br />
