How has film responded to and shaped interactions between humans and the environment This seminar tries to
develop an answer to this question by investigating contemporary American environmental films. The focus will be
on two genres: the nature documentary and Hollywood movies. The first meetings introduce relevant theoretical
contexts and methodological issues (film studies; ecocriticism). The following meetings center on discussions of the
documentaries Sacred Planet (2005), An Inconvenient Truth (2006), The Eleventh Hour (2007), Food, Inc. (2008),
and the movies Erin Brockovich (2000) and Happy Feet (2006). Discussions focus on how the films narrate and
visualize central environmental issues such as global warming, the loss of biodiversity, animal rights, and environmentally
detrimental consumption practices, thereby shedding light on the films’ thematic and aesthetic features and
on their potential cultural functions.
Texts: Students must make sure to obtain copies of all the films discussed in class
In this seminar we will discuss a selection of plays by Eugene O’Neill, Susan Glaspell, and Arthur Miller in order to
map central developments of American drama in the first half of the 20th century. We will start out with a discussion
on the “emergence” of American drama on the international stage at the beginning of the 20th century, and then
continue with discussions of the plays in terms of their aesthetics/dramatic technique, their relevance for the development
of the genre of drama in the U.S. and internationally, and their participation in public discourses that marked
the first half of the century. The plays to be discussed are: O’Neill’s Emperor Jones and The Hairy Ape, Glaspell’s
Trifles, The Outside, and The Verge, and Miller’s All My Sons, A Memory of Two Mondays, and A View from the
Bridge. Participants are expected to have read O’Neill’s plays by the beginning of the semester.
Communication between cultures, i.e. communication between people with different cultural and linguistic backgrounds,
has become an everyday occurrence in an increasingly globalized world. Such communication takes place
in a variety of different settings, including face-to-face interaction as well as mediated communication. In this course,
we will look at key issues in intercultural communication, identify problems that can arise when communicating between
cultures, and discuss explanations as well as possible solutions.
It is not necessary to register for this class.
