BA , LA, MA (electives)
HS 2st., Do 8-10,
Matzke
Fans of Sherlock Holmes know that the world’s most famous detective has always come in many (dis)guises; and it
is these versions (and subversions) we will look at in this seminar. Starting with the textual and contextual analysis
of Conan Doyle’s most famous Holmesian narratives, we will then explore textual and filmic spin-offs and adaptations
bound to take us far beyond Baker Street.
The following texts will be considered:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, A Study in Scarlet (1887), The Hound of the Baskerville (1902);
selected short stories from The Complete Stories (any edition)
Michael Chabon, The Final Solution (2005)
Michael Dibdin, The Last Sherlock Holmes Story (1978)
Carol Nelson Douglas, Chapel Noir (2001)
Mark Haddon, The Curious Incident of the Dog at Night (2003)
Matzke
This course provides an introduction to major British and Irish dramatists and plays from the 1890s to the early
1950s. We will be looking at texts and contexts, and trace patterns of development in British theatre over a period of
sixty years. Where available, we will also look at productions or (film) adaptations of these plays.
Assessment will be by short class presentations, a written exam or an end-of-term essay (graded). Each student will
also have to compile a bibliography on a play of their choice.
The following plays will be considered:
Oscar Wilde, The Importance of Being Ernest (1895)
George Bernard Shaw, Pygmalion (1912)
Sean O’Casey, Juno and the Paycock (1924)
T.S. Eliot, Murder in the Cathedral (1935)
J.B. Priestley, An Inspector Calls (1946)
Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot (1953)
This is part one of a two-semester introduction to British drama. Each course can also be taken separately.
The seminar is accompanied by a one-hour “Übung”, conducted as a “Block”, in which we will explore one of the
plays practically in the theatre studio. Watch the notice board in GW I and my website for time and location.
PS 2st., Do 14-16,
This course is concerned with several aspects of religious language both across religions and cultures. Using religious
texts and sermons/preachings or teachings, attention will be on lexical, semantic, and pragmatic choices and
their intended effects on followers. We will also examine the place of religious texts in language change, language
elaboration and standardisation, especially through the translation of such sacred texts, e.g. the Bible.
