gekennzeichnet.
ACHTUNG
Bei Verwechslung der Anschlüsse entsteht eine
unzulässige Überdruckbelastung.
MZ 2D, MZ 2T
Die Pumpe arbeitet zweistufig. An beiden Membranköpfen A
angeschlossen.
– Der Druckanschluß von A-EX, B-EX ist an Sauganschluß
C-IN angeschlossen. D.h. Membrankopf A und B arbeiten
synchron. Beide Saug- und Druckstutzen sind
gegeneinander über Rückschlagventile abgesichert. So
ist ein gegenseitiger Druckausgleich unterbunden.
– C-EX ist an D-IN angeschlossen. Je nach
Pumpenausführung ist die Auslaßseite 2.1 der MD 4 mit
einer Schlauchwelle DN 10, einem Schalldämpfer oder
einem Kleinflansch DN 16 ISO-KF ausgerüstet.
MD 8/MD 8C
Kondensatabscheider einsetzen.
3.4. Auspuffseite anschließen
In der Auspuffleitung kann sich gefährlich hoher
ACHTUNG
Druck aufbauen. Leitung daher auspuffseitig
ohne eingebaute Absperrorgane verlegen.
Das Verbinden der Auspuffseite mit einem
geschlossenen System ist unbedingt zu
vermeiden (Berstgefahr!). Maximaler Gegendruck am Auslaß
siehe unter 8. Technische Daten).
The Diaphragm Vacuum Pumps Series MD4 and MD8 and the
Series MZ2 are three stage and two stage dry compressing
pumps respectively. This means that any medium being pumped
is not brought into contact with lubricating agents.
The pumps are of the displacement type where the movement
of the diaphragm causes a periodic change in the size of the
working chamber. The flow of gas causes the self-acting valves
to open and close.
The pumping units are directly connected to the drive motor
Pump versions
Standard version = MZ 2D, MD 4, MD 8.
T - version = Pump for Turbomolecular Pumping Stations.
C - version = Pump in corrosive gas version.
TC - version = Pump in corrosive gas version for
Turbomolecular Pumping Stations.
RL - version = Pump with reduced leak rate.
TRL- version = Pump with reduced leak rate for
Turbomolecular pumping stations.
Pump in corrosive gas version are distinguished from the aforementioned
standard versions by the use of corrosive gas
resistant materials in the working chamber which comes into
contact with the media (see Section 8.2 for such materials).
To avoid condensation in the pump, the MZ 2T as from serial
number 204 65 500 are fitted with a gas ballast valve as
standard.
23
3. Installation
3.1. Setting Up The Pump And Location
24
Be sure to select the correct pump version where
the pumping of possibly aggressive media are
involved.
➡ Place pump on a smooth, even surface.
➡ Anchor the pump if it is to be erected in a stationary position.
– Avoid mechanical stresses due to rigid connections. Insert
elastic hoses or resilient elements as couplings between
the pump and rigid pipes.
➡ Maximum ambient temperature +12 ... +40 °C.
➡ Where rack installation is involved, ensure adequate ventilation.
3.2. Connection of Pumping Stages
➡ Check the hose connections for the correct type of
connecting pieces before connecting the pump to the
vacuum chamber.
– Intake and outlet connections are marked with “IN” and
“EX” respectively at the membrane heads.
Interchanging the connections will result in
impermissibly high over-pressure levels.
MD 4-product line
The pump is equipped with four separately operating
diaphragm pumps A, B, C, D which are connected via hoses
to form a three-stage vacuum pump.
– The intake connection unit A.1 is at A-IN and B-IN.
– The pressure connection from A-EX, B-EX is at intake
connection C-IN. This means that A and B operate
synchronously. Non-return valves ensure that the two intake
and pressure ports are closed to one another so there
is no risk of pressure equalisation.
– C-EX is connected to D-IN. Depending on the pump
version, the exhaust side 2.1. of the MD4 is fitted with with
a corrugated hose DN 10, a silencer or a small flange DN
16 ISO-KF.
MZ 2D, MZ 2T
The pump functions on the two stage principle.
On the two diaphragm heads A and B the intake connection is
marked with an “IN” and the exhaust connection with an
“EX” to prevent confusion. The exhaust sides of the MZ 2D
and the MZ 2T are provided with silencers.
MD 8/MD 8C
The pump is equipped with eight separately operating pump
heads which are connected via connection hoses to form a
three-stage diaphragm vacuum pump.
Flow rates of max. 11.2 m 3 /h or final vacuums of approx. 2
mbar can be achieved by arranging the total of eight pump
heads in parallel connection. The inlet is marked „IN“ and the
outlet is marked „EX“. The standard version has mounted a
silencer on the outlet.
3.3. Connecting The Vacuum Side
EX Exhaust connection at
membrane heads
E Voltage supply
2.2 Exhaust (silencer)
28 Hose connection
– Remove locking cap on intake connection.
– Make connection between the vacuum system and pump
as short as possible.
– Connect pump with intake connection to the apparatus.
– If liquid - which would generate vapours - is present in the
system to be evacuated, a condensate trap must be fitted
upstream of the pump.
3.4. Connecting The Exhaust Side
Pressure can rise to dangerous levels in exhaust
lines. Therefore, lay exhaust side lines without
shut-off units. Do not connect the exhaust side
with a closed system on account of the danger
of bursting. For the maximum counter pressure
values at the exhaust please refer to Section 8, Technical
Data.
– If, for internal operating reasons, a shut-off unit has been
fitted or if there is a danger that over-pressures can build
up in the lines, the local accident prevention regulations
must be observed.
ACHTUNG
In certain applications, exhaust gases and
vapours can be very hot and represent a health
and/or environment hazard.
➡ Lay lines from the pump sloping downwards so that
condensate cannot run back into the pump, otherwise fit a
separator.
3.5. Connecting To Mains Power
The pump is driven by AC motors with the following possible
variants:
Power connections must comply with local
regulations. Voltage and frequency information
given on the rating plate must correspond to the
mains voltage and frequency values. The pump
may only be connected to mains current with
earthed conductor.
Pump versions where the thermostatic winding
protection protrudes must be appropriately
wired to ensure the motor is protected.
– Where single phase motors with self-locking coil
protection are involved, for safety reasons the pump
should only be re-started after cooling down once it has
been momentarily disconnected from the mains.
In the three phase current version (only MD 8), the all pole
switching overload protection has to be reset manually.
Diaphragm pumps should be connected in the pumping station
as per Wiring Diagram PM 041 940 -S or PM 041 532-S.
4. Operations
4.1. Important Information
28
Use only “C” version pumps where the pumping
of corrosive gases is involved.
The diaphragm and valves will suffer damage if
fluids are pumped over lengthy periods!
Before starting, ensure that impermissibly high
pressures cannot build up on the pressure side.
Interchanging the connections causes
dangerous excess pressure levels.
Do not start the pump if pressure difference
between inlet and outlet exceeds max. 1 bar. Attemps to start
pump at higher differential pressure may cause the motor to
jam and damage may result.
When the pump is running, surfaces and motor
casing become hot.
Please note:
The pump attains the stated values for throughput rates and
final pressure levels only once the operating temperature is
reached (after approximately 15 minutes).
– The pump can be switched on and off at all times.
– The intake connections and the outputs are marked with
V and respectively.
– If the pump is subjected to condensates it should be
allowed to run for a few minutes under atmospheric
pressure before switching off.
4.2 Intermittent Operations
To prolong the life of diaphragm pumps, intermittent
operations can be selected with lesser gas throughputs of
< 0.18 mbar l/s. This means that, dependent on the TMP
power take-up, the backing pump will be switched on and off.
TMP power take-up is dependent on the fore-vacuum pressure
and gas throughput.
– By comparing the power take-up with an upper and a
lower limit value, the relative switch-on duration with
lesser gas throughputs can be reduced to approx. 1 to 60%
– To avoid too frequent switching on, the buffer volume in
the fore-vacuum line should amount to ≥ 0.5 liter from
approx. 0.018 mbar l/s.
Possible intermittent operations variations are shown in the
following diagram:
5. What To Do In The Case Of Breakdowns ?
Problem Possible cause Remedy
Pump does not attain final pressure • Condensate in the pump • Run pump for a longer period under
atmospheric pressure
• Valves/diaphragms • Clean or replace valves and diaphragms,
defective/dirty see section 6.
• Leak in system • Repair leak
Unusual operating noises • Valves/diaphragms defective • See maintenance in section 6.
• Dirt in the working chamber • Clean working chamber.
• Silencer loose or missing • Check silencer; clean or replace.
• Valves defective • Change valves.
• Motor fan defective • Change motor fan.
• Con-rod or motor bearing defective • Inform Pfeiffer-Service.
Pump does not start • No mains voltage • Check control voltage (see section 3.5.)
• Phase failure • Check fuse.
• Motor contactor switch has • Allow the motor to cool down and
been tripped. depress protection switch.
• Ambient temperature < 12 °C • Warm pump
• Dirty valves/diaphragms • See maintenance in section 6.
• Over-pressure in the exhaust line • Open exhaust line (open exhaust valve).
Pump switches off • Sticking diaphragms • Clean pump (see section 6.)
• Wrong mains voltage • Correct as per rating plate
29
6. Maintenance
All pump bearings are arranged outside the working
chamber, are enclosed and have lifetime lubrication. Under
normal operating conditions the pumps need no servicing.
It is not necessary to check the operating fluid. Valves and
diaphragms are subject to wear and tear. At the latest when
the attained pressure levels begin to deteriorate the working
chamber, the diaphragms and the valves should be cleaned
and checked for cracks.
6.1. Precautionary Measures During
Maintenance Work
Whenever working on the pump ensure the
motor cannot get switched on.
If necessary, remove pump from the system for
inspection. Before dismantling allow the pump
to cool down.
➡ Only dismantle the pump as far is necessary to effect
repairs; only use genuine parts as per the spare parts list
when carrying out inspection work.
➡ Use only benzin or the like for cleaning. Do not use
solvents.
30
Ensure compliance with local regulations when
working with solvents.
Toxic gases and vapours can arise when carry-
WARNUNG
ing out inspection work on corrosive gas version
pumps (“C”). Pumps must be
decontaminated before inspection. Only
qualified personnel are permitted to carry out
maintenance and repair work and the regulations must be
observed.
6.2. Cleaning And Replacing Diaphragm And
Valves
6.2.1. MZ 2D, MZ 2T.
➡ Allow the pump to cool down before beginning
dismantling.
➡ Detach the pump from the pumping system and ensure the
motor cannot get switched on.
➡ Screw off hose connection between the pump stages.
➡ Remove the cheesehead screws 26 (four per pump stage).
➡ Remove housing cover 1 with head cover 2 taking care to
prevent head cover 2 falling out of housing cover 1.
➡ Check diaphragm pair 10 for damage and replace as
necessary.
– Remove head cover 2 from housing cover 1 to check valve
seals 11.
– Taking care with the position of valve seals 11, remove and
check for damage, and replacing if necessary.
– Clean all parts.
– Re-assemble pump in reverse order.
Changing the Diaphragm
➡ Dismantle pump stage as per Section 6.2.1.
➡ Remove screw 16. Caution, this screw has been stuck to
make secure against loosening.
➡ The underlying diaphragm support washer 9 must be
removed with the utmost care.
➡ Unscrew housing panel 6.
It is possible that spacers have been fitted
between the drive con-rod and the diaphragm
support washer for the purpose of compensation.
These spacers must be re-fitted at the same
height.
➡ If it is difficult to part the old diaphragm from support washer
9, apply e.g. naphtha or paraffin.
➡ If necessary, re-fit spacers under the lower diaphragm
support washer 9. Fix in place with a little grease to
prevent them falling down.
➡ Fit new diaphragm 10 and diaphragm support washer 9.
Please note:
The diaphragm is a double diaphragm of total thickness 1.6
mm. The diaphragms are specially selected and are supplied
in pairs with a maximum tolerance of 1.6 ± 0.05 mm. Replacement
➡ Remove screw 16. Caution, this screw has been stuck into
position and sealed.
➡ Screw off screws 17 and remove housing panel 6.
➡ Remove diaphragm 10. The diaphragms are usually stuck
to the housing and should be carefully pushed out from the
con-rod space by hand.
It is possible that spacers have been fitted
between the drive con-rod and the diaphragm
support washer for the purpose of compensation.
These spacers must be re-fitted at the same
height. They must not be interchanged with
another stage.
➡ If the old pair of diaphragms 10 cannot be parted from diaphragm
support washer 9, apply naphtha or paraffin.
➡ Clean the parts in naphtha and check for wear and tear,
replacing defective parts as necessary.
➡ If necessary, re-fit spacers under
the lower diaphragm support washer 9. Fix in place with a
little grease to prevent them falling down.
➡ Fit diaphragm support washer 9 onto con-rod 4.
➡ Fit new pair of diaphragms 10.
Please note:
The diaphragm is a double diaphragm of total thickness 1.6
mm. The diaphragms are specially selected and are supplied
in pairs with a maximum tolerance of 1.6 ± 0.05 mm. Replacement
diaphragms must be selected on the same basis.
➡ Fit diaphragm support washer 9.
➡ Place some adhesive (e.g. Loctite 601) under the head of
screw 16 and screw in diaphragm and spring washer.
➡ Further assembly as per Section 6.2.2.
Changing the Diaphragms on MD 4TC
➡ Dismantle pump stages as per Section 6.2.2.
➡ In addition, the front housing cover panel 6 must be
dismantled.
➡ Using a standard trade face spanner (size 40/4) turn
diaphragm support washer 9 thereby loosening diaphragm
10.
➡ Remove diaphragm spring washer
3 with square connecting
screw 14, diaphragm 10 and diaphragm support washer 9.
➡ Check that square connecting
screw 14 is still firmly positioned in diaphragm spring washer
3 and tighten if necessary (left-hand thread).
32
➡ Fit new diaphragm 10 between diaphragm spring washer 3
and diaphragm support washer 9.
➡ Refit diaphragm 10 with spring washer and support washer
in reverse order.
➡ Fit housing cover 6.
➡ To fit the PTFE connecting hose, tighten the metal lock nut
by hand and then by a half a turn with an Allen key.
6.2.3. MD 8/MD 8C
Cleaning
➡ Use a fork wrench (SW 17) to loosen the screwed fittings
8.4. on all pump heads.
- It is not necessary to dismantle the connecting hoses on
the screwed fittings on the manifold.
➡ Remove the connection hose(s) between the intake side 72
and pressure side 8.5 manifold after loosening screwed fitting
8.10 with a fork wrench (SW 15).
➡ Use a recessed-head screwdriver to unscrew countersunk
screws 8.1. and 73 and then remove pressure and intake
side manifolds with all component parts.
➡ Check all pump heads, one after the other, in the following
manner:
➡ Unscrew the four cheesehead screws 8.16 on the pump
heads with an Allan key (SW 5) and remove the housing
upper part (housing cover 8.17 with head cover 8.19.);
- take care here to prevent the head cover falling out from
the housing cover.
➡ Check the double diaphragm 10 for damage and replace as
necessary.
➡ Remove head cover 8.19. from housing cover 8.17 in order
to check the valves. Check the position of valves 11 and
remove. In the case of damage, replace.
➡ If the parts are dirty clean with benzine or a technical solvent.
➡ Assemble the housing upper part in reverse order.
Changing the Diaphragms on MD 8/MD 8C
As already described:
➡ Loosen the screwed fittings 8.4. and remove the
connection hose(s) between the intake side and the
pressure side manifolds.
➡ Use a recessed-head screwdriver to unscrew countersunk
screws 8.13. and remove housing panel 8.14. with the
respective manifolds and component parts.
disk 3.
Caution:
The securing screw has been provided with an adhesive to
prevent loosening. Be sure to remove all adhesive remnants
or replace.
➡ If it is difficult to part the old diaphragm 10 from the the
diaphragm supporting disk 9, use benzine or petroleum.
➡ Insert diaphragm supporting disk 9 and new diaphragm 10
and make sure that the diaphragm is the double diaphragm
type (altogether 1.6mm thick).
➡ Insert diaphragm tension disk 3, apply a drop of weak
adhesive (for example, Loctite 932) under the head and to
the thread of the cheesehead screw and finally screw the
diaphragm to the tension disk; during this procedure, look
out for the presence of possible compensating disks.
➡ By turning on the eccentric bush (facing side connecting
rod) bring connecting rod 24 into such a position that the
diaphragm is located on the supporting plate in the
housing opening.
➡ Assemble the housing cover with internal parts and the
housing panel in reverse order.
➡ Check the function of the pump head and the pump (after
fitting the connecting hoses) as described in the previous
section.
