The main target of this
project is the precise and
timely capture of data to calculate
energy consumption
and the energy cost for each
train running belonging to the
Slovenian railway system, including
trains going to foreign
countries. On the one hand,
this energy data calculation
allows cost allocation to single
transportation tasks and,
on the other hand, a sound
basis to forecast for the costs
of new transportation jobs.
The project was carried out by Genera
Lynx d.o.o., a company specialized
in the delivery of software
systems for railway operators. The
measurement itself is performed
by a special LEM electricity meter,
designed for use in railway applications.
GÖRLITZ data collection technology
performs the task of transmitting
the energy data to the
central system and, in addition,
collects and transmits the exact
position data, aligned with the
energy data.
Technical solution
in the engine
Several devices are installed in
the Slovenian railway system’s
engines.
A GPS receiver is mounted on the
roof of the engine, which delivers
information on the exact position
of the engine, the direction it is
travelling in, and its speed in 1minute
cycles.
In the power chamber of the engine,
active transducers convert
the 3,000 Volts of the engine
supply into a voltage suitable for
the measurement units and for
feeding current into a signal compatible
with the metering inputs.
A metering box includes the energy
meter, type EM4T manufactured
by LEM, the data transfer device,
type SKALAR manufactured by
GÖRLITZ, and the power supply
necessary for the equipment.
Data collection and data transfer
technology:
The data collection and data transfer
uses GÖRLITZ’s SKALAR GSM
/ GPRS . The application makes
extensive use of the on-board
intelligence of Skalar, utilising several
different technologies:
Data collection from the energy
meter is performed by regular
reading of the serial output of
the EM4T meter by the SKALAR.
This task is internally scheduled
and creates a readable file of
energy consumption data stored
in the SKALAR’s memory. This
file contains the profile of the
energy exchange with the electri-
city supply of the running engine,
separated into received active energy
(traction energy), delivered
active energy (breaking energy,)
and reactive energy in 1-minute
resolutions.
The selected GPS receiver transmits
its data (position, speed,
direction) in a 1-minute cycle into
another SKALAR serial interface.
The SKALAR collects this information
in 1-minute cycles and creates
another readable data file in its
memory.
The SKALAR connects at regular
intervals (currently every 30 minutes)
via a private access point
to the GPRS network in Slovenia
and sends all the data collected
via a VPN connection to a central
FTP server at the railway HQ. The
system includes general energy
