for its vehicles and over the past few years it
has, on average, consumed some 170 million
kWh of heat and electricity per year in its
various premises. In total the Austrian Post
emits about 95,000 tons of CO 2 per year. In
order to deliver all the letters, parcels and
advertising material in a CO 2-neutral fashion,
the enterprise will have to massively reduce
its emissions and introduce a radically more
efficient way of dealing with the resources at
its disposal.
CO 2 savings in its buildings
Buildings account for 40 % of all the energy
consumed in the EU. Their energy requirements
are amongst the main causes of
increasing greenhouse emissions. The
Austrian Post has applied measures to
reduce its footprint in this area. They have
reduced the amount of oil and gas-fired
heating systems located in their buildings
and increased the amount supplied by
district heating. In addition, when it comes
to electricity supply the focus has been put
on receiving power from renewable sources.
However, the plans go much further than
just this. A possible future lighting concept
involves utilising LED systems and a feasibility
study is underway concerning photovoltaic
units for distribution centres.
TÜV AUSTRIA checks
that quality is maintained
Whenever the subject turns to the issue of
climate neutral policies there is always a fine
line between what is claimed and what is
actually the truth. Therefore, the Austrian
Post have chosen the path of certification
and accompanying monitoring measures in
order to prove the effectiveness of its energy
reduction policy. The task of ensuring the
necessary quality control was taken over by
TÜV AUSTRIA Consult, a subsidiary of the
TÜV AUSTRIA Group. The certification
specialists oversee the success of the Post’s
sustainability programme. Günter Zowa,
managing director of TÜV AUSTRIA Consult,
describes the collaboration with the Austrian
Post as follows: »Our experts have examined
the calculation methodology behind the
desired CO2-neutral policy the Post wishes
to achieve. Moreover, we support the Post
in its emissions reduction measures and
will accompany them in setting-up the
compensation projects that they will be
introducing«.

Wird über Klimaneutralität diskutiert, ist der
Grat zwischen Behauptung und Wahrheit
ein schmaler. Die Post wählte daher den
Weg der Zertifizierung und begleitenden
Überprüfung, um die Wirksamkeit ihrer
Energiesparmaßnahen zu belegen.
Die Aufgabe der notwendigen Qualitätssicherung
übernimmt dabei die TÜV
AUSTRIA Consult, ein Tochterunternehmen
der TÜV AUSTRIA Gruppe. Die Zertifizierungsspezialisten
überwachen den Erfolg
des postalischen Nachhaltigkeitsprozesses.
