Kumho Wants to Become Number 1 in China
25 per cent market share in PC tyres
Kumho will die Nummer eins in China werden
25 Prozent angestrebter Marktanteil bei Pkw-Reifen
After Kumho Tires laid down the foundation stones for its
new passenger car tyre factory in Changchun (Jilin province)
in May last year and for its new truck tyre factory in
Nanjing (Jiangsu province) at the beginning of this year, the
company has during the course of this year shown the
potential to become the biggest tyre manufacturer in China.
According to Kumho’s plans the Korean tyre manufacturer
already intends to overtake competitor Hankook on the Chinese
PC tyre market in 2007. In the mid-term Kumho is
attempting to achieve a 25 per cent market share with the
distribution of its passenger car tyres in China, which will
mainly occur to the detriment of the country’s “Big 3.” Hankook
– according to the same plan – would develop almost
in parallel with Kumho with regards to Chinese market
share. However, Hankook – clearly number one in both companies’
home market of Korea – will remain slightly behind
Kumho in China. By the end of this year Kumho will have
available a production capacity of about 21 million units in
its Chinese facilities, which is a growth of 40 per cent compared
to last year. The installation of another new “global
R&D centre” in China plus a widespread retail and distribution
network are the most significant events during Kumho’s
expansion in China.
e have always had unswerving confidence in the Chinese
“W market, and regard it as the top potential market in the
world,” said Chang-Nyun Kim in an interview with China Business
Weekly. Mr Kim has been proved right in the past and it appears
the same is true today and will be true in the future. By next year
Kumho plans to gain a Chinese replacement and OE market
share of about 20 per cent, adds the general manager of Kumho
(China) Sales Co., Ltd. In global terms the company aims to become
number 5, one of Kumho’s mid-term ambitions.
Whether or not this is wishful thinking remains to be seen.
However, it is clear that Kumho’s activities in China all seem to
support that goal. In 2005 Kumho generated a turnover of around
US$273 million and sold some 12 million tyres made in China.
Last year this figure reached 15 million tyres, sales of about $347
million, says the Korean manufacturer. According to the company-
’s general manager, 2006 has been “an important year” for Kumho.
“This year we will finish construction of our factory in Tianjin
and go into production. Our factory in Changchun (in northeast
China’s Jilin Province) will kick things off as well, and by the latter
half of this year, our global R&D centre in Tianjin will also start
Mit der Grundsteinlegung zur neuen Pkw-Reifenfabrik in
Changchun (Provinz Jilin) im Mai vergangenen Jahres und
der Grundsteinlegung zur neuen Lkw-Reifenfabrik in Nanjing
(Provinz Jiangsu) Anfang dieses Jahres könnte Kumho Tires
bereits in diesem Jahr zum größten Hersteller in China aufsteigen;
Pkw-Reifen, was – so die Annahme – vorwiegend zulasten
der Marktanteile der „Großen drei“ gehen dürfte. Hankook,
In
so General Manager Kim. „In diesem Jahr werden wir die
Fabrik in Tianjin in Betrieb nehmen. Unsere neue Fabrik in
