Production capacity to expand to over
200,000 retreads a year
When Wolverhampton’s iconic Goodyear chimney was
demolished on 29 June, the fall of the 150 foot tall
blue and yellow monument marked the end an era for
the manufacturing site. After 80 years of Dunlop and
Goodyear new and retreaded tyre production in
Wolverhampton, three-quarters of the former 88-acre
site has been sold for redevelopment into a residential
area with 700 houses, shops, a park and a school. The
beginning of the new era sees the remaining 18-acres
of Goodyear Dunlop compound mixing and retread
production being redeveloped too, with budget
approved for a three-year expansion plan that will see
retread production in Wolverhampton rise to in excess
of 200,000 units a year.
As an increased proportion of production is exported onto the
continent, the plan is for Wolverhampton to become a European
centre for Next Tread manufacturing in addition to the
volume that the company currently supplies to customers in the UK.
This means the plant will now only produce Next Tread branded retread
products and that a growing number of these are to be shipped
direct to Goodyear Dunlop’s regional truck tyre distribution centre in
Wittlich, Germany.
While the outwardly visible transformation began in June when
the chimney fell, preparations for the ‘new era’ began long before. In
the summer of 2006, for example, Goodyear Dunlop relocated its retread
operation to a newly expanded manufacturing hall on the other
side of its compounding works – the vast majority of which was done
in just two weeks. Prior to this, retread production had been about a
quarter of mile away on the other side of the 88-acre pre-consolidation
site. Talking to production managers reveals that their first
priority is to make the current site as lean as possible, before further
expanding both the plant’s production capacity and efficiency.
Current production stands at 360 tyres a day (80,000 retreads a
year) and the Wolverhampton factory’s output is now 100 per cent
mould-cure (pre-cure production has already been phased out),
which is produced using a total of 36 mostly TRM curing presses.
This is obviously more than ample for the amount of tyres that roll off
the production line in Wolverhampton, and rather demonstrates both

Als der alte Schlot der Goodyear-Fabrik im Wolverhampton
am 29. Juni dieses Jahres gesprengt wurde,
ging mit dem Fall des 50 Meter hohen Wahrzeichens
der mittelenglischen Stadt auch eine langjährige Ära
des Produktionsstandortes zu Ende. Nach 80 Jahren
der Reifenherstellung unter Dunlop und dann Goodyear
Dunlop wurden nun weit über drei Viertel des über
350.000 Quadratmeter großen Industrieareals verkauft;
es sollen über 700 Wohnhäuser sowie Geschäfte, ein
Park und eine Schule entstehen. Die verbleibenden
rund 70.000 Quadratmeter will der Reifenkonzern nun
weiterhin benutzen, um Mischungen und runderneuerte
Reifen zu fertigen, wozu die verbleibenden Anlagen
von Grund auf saniert und sogar erweitert wurden. Im
Rahmen eines auf drei Jahre angelegten Expansionsprogramms
will Goodyear Dunlop in Wolverhampton
die jährliche Produktion an runderneuerten Lkw- und
Busreifen auf dann über 200.000 Einheiten anheben.
Da eine zunehmende Anzahl an in Wolverhampton gefertigten
Runderneuerten nach Kontinentaleuropa exportiert wird,
wird der Standort mehr und mehr zum Dreh- und Angelpunkt
der europäischen „Next Tread”-Fertigung des Goodyear-Dunlop-
Konzerns. Natürlich wird auch der britische Markt weiterhin versorgt.
Entsprechend der Funktion als Zentralstandort für die Runderneuerungsaktivitäten
des Konzerns fertigt Goodyear Dunlop ausschließlich
Runderneuerte der eigenen Marke „Next Tread”, die –
wenn in Europa vermarktet – zuerst nach Wittlich in Deutschland
gebracht werden, dem europäischen Zentrallager für Lkw-Reifen.
Während mit dem Schlot das Symbol des alten Standortes fiel
und den Blick frei machte auf die angekündigten Neuerungen am
Standort Wolverhampton, so begannen die Planungen für den Umbau
der Produktionsstätte und den Beginn einer „neuen Ära” doch
lange zuvor. Bereits im Sommer 2006 zog der Teil der Fabrik, in dem
auch früher schon runderneuerte Reifen produziert wurden, in eine
frisch erweiterte Produktionshalle am anderen Ende des Standortes
um und erhielt somit einen Platz direkt neben der Mischerei. Der
Großteil dieses Fabrikumzugs wurde in immerhin zwei Wochen bewerkstelligt.
