A ‘New Era’ Begins in
Wolverhampton for Goodyear Dunlop
A large chunk of Goodyear Dunlop’s Wolverhampton site, home to
new and retreaded tyre production for more than 80 years, has been
sold for redevelopment. But the 18 acres that remain in company
hands are gaining a new lease of life, with approval given to expand
retread production to in excess of 200,000 units per annum.
Importantly, an increased proportion of production is destined for
export to the continent, the plan being for Wolverhampton to become
a European centre for Next Tread manufacturing in addition to
serving its existing UK customers.
Rösler to Offer Total Earthmover
Tyre Service
The Rösler group is long established in the retreading business and
has worked towards covering all facets of earthmover tyre retreading.
More recently it entered the new tyre business with its
‘Winstone’ tyre brand, giving Rösler an
OTR product range with 25 sizes and numerous
tread patterns. The company is now
embarking upon its next step into the OTR
and earthmover tyre sector through the introduction
of ‘Rösler 360°’, a total earthmover
tyre service covering everything from
help in optimising processes and fleet costs
through to staff training.
Retreads use 41 per cent less CO2 than new tyres during their lifecycle
With Chinese input prices on the up
could there be a retread renaissance?
A new era…
Goodyear Wolverhampton
to Become Next Tread
European Centre
Production capacity to expand to over
200,000 retreads a year
When Wolverhampton’s iconic Goodyear chimney was
demolished on 29 June, the fall of the 150 foot tall
blue and yellow monument marked the end an era for
the manufacturing site. After 80 years of Dunlop and
Goodyear new and retreaded tyre production in
Wolverhampton, three-quarters of the former 88-acre
site has been sold for redevelopment into a residential
area with 700 houses, shops, a park and a school. The
beginning of the new era sees the remaining 18-acres
of Goodyear Dunlop compound mixing and retread
production being redeveloped too, with budget
approved for a three-year expansion plan that will see
retread production in Wolverhampton rise to in excess
of 200,000 units a year.
As an increased proportion of production is exported onto the
continent, the plan is for Wolverhampton to become a European
centre for Next Tread manufacturing in addition to the
volume that the company currently supplies to customers in the UK.
This means the plant will now only produce Next Tread branded retread
products and that a growing number of these are to be shipped
direct to Goodyear Dunlop’s regional truck tyre distribution centre in
Wittlich, Germany.
While the outwardly visible transformation began in June when
the chimney fell, preparations for the ‘new era’ began long before. In
the summer of 2006, for example, Goodyear Dunlop relocated its retread
operation to a newly expanded manufacturing hall on the other
side of its compounding works – the vast majority of which was done
in just two weeks. Prior to this, retread production had been about a
quarter of mile away on the other side of the 88-acre pre-consolidation
site. Talking to production managers reveals that their first
priority is to make the current site as lean as possible, before further
expanding both the plant’s production capacity and efficiency.
Current production stands at 360 tyres a day (80,000 retreads a
year) and the Wolverhampton factory’s output is now 100 per cent
mould-cure (pre-cure production has already been phased out),
which is produced using a total of 36 mostly TRM curing presses.
This is obviously more than ample for the amount of tyres that roll off
the production line in Wolverhampton, and rather demonstrates both
es sollen über 700 Wohnhäuser sowie Geschäfte, ein
rund 70.000 Quadratmeter will der Reifenkonzern nun
Goodyear Dunlop’s intention and ability
to significantly up output. In fact, plant
technicians are in the process of
increasing efficiency by converting the
majority of presses to nitrogen usage for
shorter cure times. In addition, Tyres &
Accessories was shown the adjacent
space where the company will install a
number of new presses, pre-equipped
for nitrogen curing. All the Next Tread
presses use eight-piece moulds.
The next improvement workers will
notice in Wolverhampton will be the
completion of the G-Track tyre tracking
system roll-out. The plant is currently
operating with a barcode and worksheet
method, but the new paperless electronic
system is scheduled for introduction
at the end of September and will bring
with it significant tracking and tracing
The Wolverhampton Management Team
benefits.
Next up, managers are planning to Das Managementteam in Wolverhampton
install a number of new ergonomically
designed inspection bays, again to help manage the increased
throughput the Wolverhampton plant is expected to handle in the
near future. Further down the line, the plant’s production team is
aiming to install a monorail system that allows for every tyre
produced to be transported around the plant without needing to
touch the ground.
The future investments will once again require a significant, but
as yet undefined, investment, meaning the total amount invested in
the Wolverhampton site over three years will certainly run into
millions. This year alone Goodyear has already made a seven-figure
investment in new Shearography and buffing machinery. Training
for the new machinery has taken place in both Germany and the UK.
Goodyear Dunlop says the new equipment will play a vital component
in its product and service offering, helping to raise the bar in
customer satisfaction. At the time, Ken Wilson, QTECH manager,
Retread Europe commented: “By using these machines we are
providing world-class products which are reliable and dependable.
Goodyear Dunlop’s Next Tread facility is class leading and this
investment highlights our commitment to our customers and the
Wolverhampton site.”
Customer rather than production focused
When Tyres & Accessories visited the Wolverhampton plant in
August, the tour began in the former new tyre production plant’s
material calendaring hall. Due in no small part to the industrious
efforts of retreading team members (company employees stripped
out and repainted the area in preparation for its new purpose),
this now functions as the casing delivery and primary inspection
point. Here tyres are sorted for size, given a cursory visual
inspection and tested on two Hawkinson-type nail hole detectors,
before casing integrity is analysed using the new Shearography
6
her, was einer Jahresproduktion von
80.000 entspricht. Während früher dort auch
runderneuerte Reifen im Kaltverfahren gefertigt
wurden, hat sich der Konzern mittlerweile von
diesem Verfahren verabschiedet und stellt zu
100 Prozent Heißrunderneuerte her. Dazu werden
36 Vulkanisationspressen (vornehmlich von
TRM) betrieben.
equipment detailed above.
According to the plant’s management, prospective casings are
delivered by collection companies such as Statham Tyres and TRS
and remain the property of the casing collection company until the
point that they pass the Shearography test. From here on, approved
casings become the property of Goodyear Dunlop and so become
subject to repeated quality control measures.
From here casings are moved onto the buffing stage where the
current equipment includes four high-tech buffing machines, the
newest of which are Marangoni Giotto models which began operation
in February this year. After the usual repair and quality control
work is completed, casings are prepared for curing using modern
automated building machinery such as Marangoni’s Alpha Twin
model. Curing takes place in the mainly TRM hot-cure presses
mentioned above, before tyres are given final post-cure visual and
inflation tests.
According to company representatives, the increasingly lean
Goodyear Dunlop Next Tread retreading process is a result of a
change in overall focus. This means managers have gone through a
mind-shift away from simply being production focused toward being,
in their words, customer focused. This also gives one explanation as
to why recent production levels in Wolverhampton have been
significantly lower than historical retread output. Goodyear Dunlop
representatives explained it to T&A like this: Next Tread is a much
cleaner, streamlined product offering, with patterns that complement
both brands’ casings, while being a standalone product in its
own right. They also pointed out that, in addition to the infrastructure
investments that have taken place, a lot of thought has
also gone into streamlining processes and production mentality. The
Production managers are aiming to expand production capacity to over 200,000
units in the next three years
von Unternehmen wie etwa Statham Tyres oder TRS gesammelt;
produktionsbezogen, sondern alles, was in
Wolverhamptons Runderneuerungsfabrik
geschieht, orientiert sich an den Bedürfnissen
des Endverbrauchers; Stichwort: Klasse
statt Masse. Der aktuelle Output liegt demnach
auch teilweise beträchtlich unter den
Produktionszahlen früherer Jahre. Heute
Manufacturer fined £13,500 for incident
Goodyear Dunlop has announced the launch of a global
health and safety plan after a worker was injured in an
accident at the company’s Wolverhampton plant. Goodyear
Dunlop pleaded guilty to breaching the 1974 Health and
Safety at Work Act in a hearing before Birmingham
magistrates at the beginning of August. The manufacturer
was fined £13,500 and ordered to pay £2,888.04 in costs
plus £4000 in damages.
Goodyear Dunlop’s main response has come in the form of it new
“No-one Gets Hurt” plan, which includes safety awareness training,
and risk assessments that are designed to lead to improvements
in processes and equipment usage. “[Goodyear Dunlop] has a positive
commitment towards health and safety and continues to strive
towards a culture and environment in which all its employees can
work safely. We will learn from the findings of this case and
continue to improve towards achieving our objective of No-one
Gets Hurt,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.
According to an HSE report, the incident occurred on 15 June
2007 when a casing operator was inspecting tyre casings and a
forklift truck loaded with a four-high stack of heavy steel stillages
(pallets) passed by. The stillages were not secured to each other or
to the truck and toppled onto the worker, causing two fractures to
one of his ribs.
Following the case, HSE inspector Amarjit Kalay commented: "It
is important that individuals and employers remember their duties
under the law to take reasonable care of the health and safety of
others. The injuries inflicted could have been significantly worse, or
even fatal. Operators of lift trucks must ensure that they operate
them in accordance with training and employers must ensure that
they are used safely." cja
Goodyear Dunlop mit neuem
Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsplan
Hersteller muss 17.000 Euro Strafe zahlen
Nachdem ein Arbeiter in der Goodyear-Dunlop-Runderneuerungsfabrik
im mittelenglischen Wolverhampton bei
einem Unfall verletzt wurde, kündigte das Unternehmen
einen neuen weltweiten Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsplan
an. Bei einer Anhörung Anfang August vor einem
Magistratsgericht in Birmingham bekannte sich der
Hersteller schuldig, gegen Vorgaben des 1974 in Kraft
getretenen britischen „Health and Safety at Work Act”
Juni 2007 in Wolverhampton
statt.
Green Tyres Mean Business Grüne Reifen bedeuten Umsatz
Retreads use 41 per cent
less CO2 than new tyres
during their lifecycle
The tyre industry definition of a ‘green tyre’ is taking
on a new meaning. Ever since tyres have been mass
produced these two words have referred to the
semi-finished un-vulcanised tyre product. Now the
tyre industry is taking on an increasingly ecological
focus and ‘green tyre thinking’ is giving retreaders
the opportunity to ‘sell’ the uniquely environmental
benefits they offer over and above new tyres.
With this in mind, Tyres & Accessories interviewed
Patrick O’Connell, director of one of the UK’s leading
independent retreading operations, and learnt that
retreads are not only the greenest tyres on the market,
but that they make sound business sense too.
Everyone knows that retreads are greener than new tyres, but
now it seems retreaders are making a concerted effort to shout
about the eco-benefits of their tyres. The first step has been
commissioning new research demonstrating, once again, the environmental
soundness of retreads. Numerous reports have been conducted
by organisations such as WRAP (Waste & Resources Action
Programme) and, recently, Best Foot Forward, who was commissioned
by the Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse. This independent
life cycle analysis was carried out to compare the relative carbon
footprints of new tyres and retreaded tyres and concluded that the
manufacture and distribution of a retreaded tyre results in significantly
less carbon emissions than the production of a new tyre.
According to the latest figures, retreaded truck tyres save, on
average, 68 litres of oil and 44 kilograms of rubber, and emit much
less carbon dioxide (38.7kg versus 220kg) per tyre. If a tyre casing
can be retreaded twice, the numbers quickly add up to very significant
environmental gains and that’s without taking into account the
energy associated with the disposal of tyres. Applying this across
an entire vehicle only increases the savings (see vehicle savings
diagram). When extrapolated across a whole fleet, you can see one
clear reason why retreads continue to compete successfully
against the price driven imports from the Far East.
Bandvulc a leading UK trading partner
Despite the economic slowdown that is being experienced across
the board, Bandvulc Group (the company’s combined retread manufacturing
and fleet management businesses) achieved impressive
Runderneuerte benötigen
41 Prozent weniger CO2
Seitdem Reifen in
britischen Runderneuerers Bandvulc, betonte
Gesichtspunkten absolut Sinn machen.
I
m Grunde genommen weiß jeder, dass runderneuerte Reifen „grüner“,
also umweltschonender sind als Neureifen. Erst nun scheinen
annual sales of £32.5 million last year. Analytical data produced by
tyre market researchers at Plimsoll Publishing shows that this
puts Bandvulc very near the top of a table of the best UK tyre
manufacturing and distribution trading partners – in second place
overall. To put this in perspective, the Plimsoll calculation (which
balances companies’ commercial and financial performance
irrespective of overall size) puts Bandvulc ahead of tyre majors
Bridgestone UK Ltd (3rd place) and Continental Tyre Group Ltd
(4th place). Axle Group, the holding company which owns National
Tyres & Autocare and wholesaler Viking International, was ranked
number one.
When asked directly, Bandvulc representatives confirmed that
the company is indeed enjoying combined national sales of “around
£30 million per annum.” According to director Patrick O’Connell,
Bandvulc Tyres (the retread manufacturing arm) is set to achieve an
even better result this year, with sales growing 8.95 per cent yearto-date.
Sales at Bandvulc Tyre Contracts or BTC (the tyre management
division) are also going north, with this business reporting
17 per cent sales growth over the same period last year.
As an independent company, Bandvulc Tyre Contracts has the
advantage that it can use any tyre distributor including national companies
and independent service providers; enabling it to build up a
comprehensive network. The Bandvulc Group is also said to be the
only company with its own dedicated fleet management and tyre
support centre that can offer customers independent network call
handling for their own fleets. “It’s a challenging time for everyone
and transport companies who are not using retreads would do well
to consider them as a sustainable option, along with an effective tyre
management solution,” Patrick O’Connell commented.
Low rolling resistance treads, without
cutting corners
With most manufacturers upping their research and development
budgets for low rolling resistance tyres (at the time of going to press
Pirelli announced that its Silvio Tronchetti Provera Foundation is
partnering with University of Shandong to in order to further research
exactly this topic), there is no question that low rolling resistance
products are going to play an influential part in future market
developments. The question is: what is the most effective way of
modifying tyres in order to lower rolling resistance – is it through the
type of casing, changing the tread depth, changing the compound,
or a combination of all three? Any reduction in rolling resistance can
lead to cost savings from fuel and improvements in an operation’s
efficiency and profit, together with reductions in CO2 emissions – all
things that fleets would be interested in buying into. The problem is
that most sources agree that improving one aspect of a tyre’s design
eventually has a negative impact on another.
“The trade off with any manufacturers’ tyre is that it is going to
be difficult to have a tyre which will last the same as a conventional
tyre and also save fuel; it’s a balancing act,” Patrick O’Connell explained.
Bandvulc is currently concentrating its efforts on producing
tyres that will improve fuel consumption for customers’ fleets, while
maintaining a long tread life. The aim is to offer customers a standard
tread tyre, but with better rolling resistance, resulting in fuel
prognostiziert. Gerechnet bis heute sei bereits eine Umsatzsteigerung
von 8,95 Prozent erzielt worden. Aber die Unternehmenssparte Reifenmanagement
(Bandvulc Tyre Contracts bzw. BTC) erwartet steigende
Netzwerk an Service-Stationen basiert.
savings in the region of 5 per cent for a complete truck and trailer.
This new product is said to be as good as the leading new tyre
manufacturers’ low rolling resistance tyres.
According to the company, this 5 per cent fuel saving is being
achieved mainly through developments in compound design.
Researchers at Bandvulc’s on-site laboratory and rubber mixing
facility, Devon Rubber, claim the company’s new mix will offer
customers 5 per cent off their fuel consumption without sacrificing
tread life.
Some sources suggest manufacturers of early low rolling resistance
tyres achieved their goal by cutting corners on things like
tread depth, which O’Connell says automatically reduces rolling
resistance. The theory is that many of these early tyres found a
market because truck makers were keen to show customers that
their vehicles were more fuel efficient than their competitors. At the
point of sale no-one was particularly interested in how long the tyre
would last, so the main focus was on the
truck’s fuel consumption.
However, reducing rolling resistance
through cutting back on tread depth can
only ever be seen as a “quick fix” as it
inevitably leads to a reduction in the life of
the tyre itself. “When considering low
rolling resistance tyres it is very important
that the customer can fully evaluate the
tread radius and tread depth in conjunction
with the fuel savings that are claimed by
the manufacturer. For instance, some
manufacturers reported fuel saving on
lower rolling resistance tyres compared to
the standard production of 385/65R22.5s,
but these proved to be only fractionally
better and it is important that the customer
has the information to fully assess and
compare makes and sizes,” O’Connell
explained.
Legislation is now in the process of being drawn up through
the European Parliament to categorise tyres by rolling resistance
in a similar way to energy ratings used for domestic appliances.
Bandvulc representatives told Tyres & Accessories that the
Devon-based manufacturer is keen to see this legislation in place
and is providing input via Bipaver (The European Retread
Manufacturers Association) to assist in this process.
Technical wizardry
Bandvulc is continuing with the investment programme Tyres &
Accessories reported in its March 2008 magazine. In short, what
this means is that the last 12 months have seen the introduction of:
A Sheorography inspection machine, six additional steam injected
Bagomatic presses and new tyre tracking software. The new
system, which is known as Merlin (continuing the Knights of the
Round Table theme that runs throughout the factory) enables the
barcoding of every tyre/casing and storage of data including details
of manufacturer, customer/casing supplier, size, etc. As the tyre
schung?
verringert. Dieses Produkt sei so gut, wird bei
Bandvulc betont, wie rollwiderstandsoptimierte
Lkw-Reifen führender Neureifenhersteller.
Laut Bandvulc werde diese fünfprozentige
Einsparung beim Kraftstoffverbrauch hauptsächlich
durch Weiterentwicklungen bei der
Mischung erreicht. Dabei versprechen die Experten
aus Bandvulcs F&E-Abteilung, dass diese
Einsparung eben nicht zu Lasten der Langlebigkeit
des runderneuerten Reifens geht.
Folgt man einigen Quellen, so funktioniert
Rollwiderstandsoptimierung, wie sie zu Beginn
verstanden und umgesetzt wurde, in der Regel
durch Anpassungen bei der Profiltiefe eines Reifens–
je flacher Rillen und Lamellen, umso geringer
der Rollwiderstand, so O’Connell. Damals, so
der Direktor weiter, war niemand wirklich daran
interessiert zu erfahren, wie lange der eingesetzte
Bandvulc director Patrick O’Connell
Entsprechende Vorlagen liegen derzeit
beim Europäischen Parlament. Bandvulc-Vertreter betonen dabei
undergoes various processes within the factory, this information is
also stored on the system. All information is held for 10 years,
a feature that is a requirement of the company’s ISO 9001 Quality
accreditation.
Speaking of ISO accreditation, Bandvulc is keen to point out
that it gained ISO 14001 in November 2007, further enhancing the
company’s already strong green credentials. The 14001 seal of
approval is seen as the foundation of the company’s wide ranging
green policy, which, quite literally, has implications for every area of
the business. Take factory power for example; as far as electricity is
concerned, general work has been carried out on the compressors
(ducting, overall pressure reduction, leak audits); all factory
luminaries have been replaced with lights that are five times more
energy efficient and trials on fitting inverters and soft-starts to motors
have also been carried out. It even goes as far as the toilets! To
reduce water consumption, electronically controlled urinal flushes
and percussion taps have been fitted. The company is so strongly
focused on reducing its environmental impact that an Energy Project
Manager was appointed at the beginning of 2008 year to continue
the work and make it a permanent feature of the company’s method
of operation.
Rather than just lecture fleet customers on the benefits of low
rolling resistance products and correct tyre pressures, Bandvulc is
also keen to practice what it preaches. That’s why in addition to all
the product, manufacturing and philosophical changes the company
is also seeking to gain fuel savings within its own fleet through driver
training and pressure checking. With respect to the first of these two
points, earlier this year Bandvulc participated in Fuel Efficiency
Research Trials observed by the Department for Transport (DfT)
Freight Best Practice programme. The findings of these trials, which
Michelin Tyre Plc, Home Delivery Network Ltd and B-Track Solutions
Ltd also participated in, can be found at freightbestpractice.org.uk
under the Research Reports link.
As we can see, Bandvulc takes a holistic approach to the notion
of green tyres – with the company’s corporate environmental
conscience impacting the business as a whole. What may surprise
some, looking at the financial details mentioned above, is just how
successful eco-thinking can be.
Weisheit, sondern praktiziert umweltschonendes Verhalten
Was
What Goes Around…
With Chinese input prices
on the up could there be
a retread renaissance?
Raw material price increases affect every part of the
tyre production and distribution chain. At the moment,
all new tyre manufacturers (from the largest to the
smallest) are feeling the raw materials pinch, which
has been reflected in a run of less profitable financial
reports. Even the Chinese manufacturers that were able
to offer the “economic option” for so long are being
forced to restructure their prices. Prior to this the low
price of new Chinese made truck and bus radials had
been hindering sales of quality retreads, so now that
the price differential appears to swinging back against
the Far Eastern budget producers, will this provide the
opportunity for a resurgence in retread sales?
Take Qingdao, Shandong province-based Aufine Group Co Ltd,
for example. In August Tyres & Accessories received notification
that the company was bringing in a second “unfortunate”
price increase in three months, brought on by the “not small”
(23 per cent) increase in Aufine’s natural rubber costs. The fact that
the Chinese government clamped down on production in regions
adjacent to Qingdao during the last quarter has also affected the
distribution of these products. Furthermore, in addition to pressures
mentioned above, the supply of Chinese tyres is also described as
“inconsistent” since the pound’s value has fallen against the Euro.
As a result, Chinese manufacturers are increasingly ‘cherry-picking’
sales in the most lucrative international markets.
According to the retreaders T&A spoke to, the knock-on effect
from high fuel prices and the general impact of the credit crunch
mean there is still competition from cheaper new tyres imported
from the Far East. However, the fact that Chinese tyre prices are
now
also escalating, driven by raw material and energy costs, means
the impact the effect was previously having on the market is now
declining.
After price, the second perceived area of weakness in this part
of the market is said to be product performance. First off, you have
to point out that there is a wide variation in the quality of new tyre
product manufactured in China. The best manufacturers over there
are learning very quickly by hiring experienced research and development
managers from the leading players. However, it is also true
that there are some poorer quality products. Taking a general
position, the consensus is that, while the good Chinese manufact-
What Goes Around…
Werden Preiserhöhungen
bei chinesischen Reifen
eine Runderneuerungsrenaissance
auslösen?
Die steigenden Rohstoffkosten beeinflussen jeden Teil
der Reifenproduktion und der Vertriebswege. Derzeit
fühlt jeder Neureifenhersteller – vom kleinsten bis zum
größten – den Druck, der durch die Rohstoffkosten
ausgeübt wird. Die Auswirkungen davon lassen sich
derzeit in einer ganzen Reihe schlecht ausfallender
Finanzberichte ablesen. Selbst chinesische Hersteller,
13
urers appear to be reliable in performance, the actual mileage
achieved is still generally lower compared to premium retreads.
That’s why retreaders are increasingly marketing both the
mileage and rolling resistance characteristics of their
products. The idea is to out-gun the Chinese imports by
developing products that do things they don’t. One
manufacturer that is conscious of improving the
specific qualities its tyres offer is Devon-based
Bandvulc. Bandvulc reports that it has revisited
the UK tyre market in order to develop a retread
which competes against the cheaper imported
new tyres in terms of giving better reliability, better resistance
against punctures and also has a curbing band and deeper
tread – resulting in the development of the BIG range. Although
these tyres cost approximately the same as a new imported tyre
they apparently offer 25-30 per cent more tyre life whilst
automatically being more environmentally friendly. Alongside this
new range of tipper tyres, Bandvulc Tyres has also developed the
BT08, which is a new generation super single tyre with a 20
millimetre tread depth, providing better resistance to turning scrub.
An additional factor that points to an optimistic medium-term
prognosis for the retread market is the recent strategic behaviour
of the leading premium new tyre manufacturers. Taking the UK
market as an example, the recent acquisitions/mergers of
retreaders by new tyre manufacturers – e.g. Bridgestone’s
acquisition of Bulldog (see T&A’s March 2008 retreading special,
page 24, for more on this) have seen them change focus from
selling new tyres at competitive prices to selling new and retread
tyres including fleet management. The mergers also give them
the opportunity to retread a wider range of casings outside
their own brands.
Legislation passed in the last two years is also said to be beginning
to bear fruit. Market observers report that the stringent requirements
of ECE Regulation 109 (which means that the performance,
dimensions and markings of retreads have to be equal to those of a
new tyre) is beginning to have the positive effect of instilling
confidence in operators that were previously hesitant of changing
their tyre policies to include retreads. For the same reason mould
cure retreads are reportedly becoming increasingly popular,
due to them having the appearance and performance of a new tyre,
meaning other tyre manufacturers are increasing their investment
in this area. However, it is also worth pointing out that the given
example (Bridgestone Bulldog) bucks this trend as this factory
produces considerably more pre-cure than mould-cure retreads.
While this means there is more competition for the UK’s leading
independent retreaders (Vacu-Lug and Bandvulc to name just the
two largest players), it is also said to indicate that well-known,
premium new tyre manufacturers recognise that the market in
retreads is growing. The leading players are certainly being more
open about the size of the market now. In recent years market
representatives often referred to the now ancient annual market
figure of 1 million new truck and bus tyres versus roughly 1 million
retreads as summing up the market. Now they are saying 1.4 million
new truck tyres (including 200,000 plus Chinese imports) and a
million retreads is a much more realistic estimate.
14
In 2006, 40 per cent of mouldcure retreads in China were for agricultural
OTR and light truck tyres
40 Prozent der heißrunderneuerten Reifen in China waren 2006 Landwirtschafts-,
EM- und Llkw-Reifen
einen riesigen Unterschied zwischen den verschiedenen chinesischen
Reifenherstellern in Sachen Qualität gibt.
Chinese retread market already over
10 million units
The other side of the Chinese price pressure coin is the domestic
retreading market in the People’s Republic. With the price of new
tyres on the up and some factories having production limitations thrust
upon them, one has to ask if this could benefit Chinese retreaders?
True there are continuing question marks over the retreadability of
Chinese produced tyres, and therefore casing availability, but the
sheer volume of truck tyres produced in China means there must be a
steady stream of worn truck and bus tyres that could be retreaded.
In addition, nearly all the leading players in the Chinese market claim
their tyres are retreadable, a statement that is likely to be more readily
accepted in the China than in Europe.
According to the most recent data Tyres & Accessories has
seen, over 10 million retreads were manufactured in China during
2007, with this figure expected to reach 11 million by the end of 2008.
At the same time, China’s National Bureau of Statistics reported tyre
production across the country grew 14.8 per cent over last year in
July. The Bureau’s statistics, reported by Dow Jones, show that
January to July 2008, tyre production rose 13.5 per cent year on
year to 329.32 million units.
Then there is general vehicle take up or motorisation, as it is
known. According to the Energy Information Administration, the road
vehicle population will grow from 170 million vehicles in 1996 to 454
million in 2020 in developing regions. In China car ownership is increasing
almost as quickly as the country’s gross domestic product and
by 2020 it is estimated that between 88.85 and 132.24 million privately
owned cars be driving on the roads of China. The point with both of
these figures is that virgin rubber supplies simply will not be able to
keep up with demand of this level. Will China’s retreaders be ready to
offer less virgin rubber intensive products when the time comes?
In 2006, the China Tyre Retreading and Utilization Association
(CTRA) reported that the Chinese retread market consisted of 4 million
mould cure and 5.6 million pre-cure retreads. 40 per cent of hot
retreads were various sizes of agricultural, OTR and light truck tyres
with the remaining 2.4 million units being made up of truck bias and
truck and bus radial tyres. Of the 5.6 million pre-cured the overwhelming
majority are truck retreads (4.6 million) the remaining quantity
were said to be light truck and other retreads. In short, back then 60
per cent of the market was made up of pre-cure retreads, the first
time pre-cure retread volume exceeded mould cure output.
General market conditions have changed a lot since then; raw
material prices and the global OTR tyre shortage are just two factors
that are likely to have significantly impacted the market in this time.
But the fact remains that continuously increasing new tyre
production volumes and improving product quality mean there are an
increasing number of potentially retreadable casings for those ready
to retread them. chris.anthony@tyrepress.com
neben ihren eigenen Marken rundzuerneuern.
Reifenmanagements.
Leistungen. Konsequenterweise engagieren sich Neureifenhersteller
in diesem Bereich.
eine Million runderneuerter Reifen;
der Markt wächst.
China mit über zehn Millionen
Runderneuerten
Durch die wachsenden Kosten, die sich
auch bei chinesischen Neureifenherstellern
mehr und mehr auf die Preise
niederschlagen, sowie die oben erwähnten
Limitierungen bei der Produktionsmenge
an bestimmten Standorten
(Qingdao) zeichnen sich aber auch auf
dem chinesischen Runderneuerungsmarkt
einige Veränderungen ab, die
überaus positiv stimmen sollten. Selbst
wenn wir in Europa auch weiterhin ein
großes Fragezeichen hinter der Runderneuerungsfähigkeit
chinesischer Lkw-Reifen setzen würden, so
Darüber hinaus sind Fahrzeuge in China immer weiter verbreitet;
2006 berichtete die China Tyre Retreading and Utilization Association
(CTRA), dass der chinesische Runderneuerungsmarkt aus rund
vier Millionen Heißrunderneuerten und weiteren 5,6 Millionen Kaltrunderneuerten
besteht. 40 Prozent der heißrunderneuerten Reifen
waren dabei Landwirtschafts-, EM- und Llkw-Reifen. Die verbleibenden
2,4 Millionen Reifen waren Lkw-Reifen diagonaler und radialer
Bauart. Unter den 5,6 Millionen kaltrunderneuerten Reifen bestand
die überwiegende Mehrheit (4,6 Millionen Einheiten)
aus Lkw-Reifen, während der verbleibende Rest aus
Landwirtschafts-, EM- und Llkw-Reifen bestand. 2006
While the cost of natural rubber is rising, the cost of cheaper tyres from
the Far East is also climbing, which is good news for retreaders

Goodway’s TPM department has incorporated
response programmes to
prevailing standard operating procedures
(SOP) in order to accommodate
the implementation of OHSAS 18001.
Goodway has set up a committee
made up of managerial and executive
level staff to oversee the qualification’s
implementation, and this committee
has set a ‘zero accidents, zero illness’
target for the company’s retreading
materials and rubber compound manufacturing
factory in Nilai, south of
Kuala Lumpur.
“We’ve integrated our QMS ISO
9001 and OHSAS 18001 codes of practise
into a single cohesive framework
for easy compliance,” adds Ms Yee.
“We’ve observed every effort to minimise
risk to our employees, while
gaining our customers’ confidence and demonstrating due diligence
to our partners.”
According to Goodway, obtaining OHSAS 18001 constitutes a
step towards fulfilling the Safety, Health and Environment pillar of the
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) certification that Goodway aims
to achieve. To support this initiative, the TPM department has
organised a series of events to drive home the message. These
activities cover an anti-dengue fever campaign in cooperation with
the government’s Vector Unit; audiometric tests, fire drills, blood
donation drives, anti-smoking campaigns and talks on critical illnesses
and health management by conducted by Hospital Seremban.
The OHSAS 18001 is the latest from a number
of internationally recognised standards
qualifications Goodway has earned to date;
others include the TÜV ISO 9001:2000 and the
Quality Environment Practises (formerly
known as 5S Practises Certification) from
Malaysia Productivity Corporation. sg
Das Ziel liegt bei Null
Ausgestattet mit einem neuen Gesundheits- und
Sicherheitszertifikat kann sich Goodway nun darauf
konzentrieren, das Ziel von null Unfällen und
Krankheiten am Arbeitsplatz zu erreichen.
Das OHSAS 18001 ist das international anerkannte Arbeitsschutzmanagementsystem
(ASM).
Rahmen gestaltet”, so Yee weiter.
Retreading Market Holds
Growth Opportunities
for Galgo
When Tyres & Accessories last spoke with Galgo
general manager Joe Krimpenfort in 2007 he expressed
confidence that the Mexican founded company, active
in Europe since 2003, had a strong future in this part of
the world. Today, despite a market environment where
increasing materials costs are causing some participants
uncertainty, Joe Krimpenfort retains this view.
In fact, it appears the opportunities for Galgo within
the region are growing.
We see good growth opportunities both in Western Europe
as well as in the Eastern Europe. The East has now become
the biggest importer of retreadable casings from the
West for processing in the Eastern retread plants,” says Joe Krimpenfort.
“Many new plants have started up, sometimes equipped
with second hand equipment, but also some bigger plants (including
those with a capacity of as much as 30,000 truck tyres per
annum) have started up with brand new ultra modern equipment.”
These growing markets include Russia itself, which began its
relationship with retreading through the importation of retreaded
tyres from Western Europe. This is, however, a situation where
change is beginning to be seen. “These imported Galgo retreads
from Western Europe helped us to create end-user pull, which in
turn stimulates the newly installed local Russian retreaders to buy
Galgo treads for production in Russia,” Joe Krimpenfort explains.
Just recently, we made some successful efforts in Russia, where
end-users are asking for our products because of the performance
Galgo treads gave with the imported retreads from Germany and
Czech Republic.
This growth aside, the strongest European market for Galgo,
whose current share of the European pre-cured retreading sector is
estimated to be eight per cent, remains Germany, the first national
market the company entered. Germany currently accounts for
around 20 per cent of Europe’s pre-cured retreading market. However,
since these first steps some five years ago Galgo has also
expanded in Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, Central Europe, the
Balkans & Turkey, Southern Europe and, last but not least, the UK.
The established retreading markets of Western and Southern
Europe may be growing slightly, says Joe Krimpenfort, and the popularity
of retreading is clearly witnessed when one looks at the
chronic shortage of good retreadable casings. The demand for
retreadable casings is high; the retreading of customer owned
casings is commonplace, and those casings that become available
are either quickly snapped up for processing in their local market or
find ready buyers in the high demand western or in the growing
eastern markets.
Runderneuerungsmarkt
bietet Galgo
Wachstumschancen
W
ir sehen gute Wachstumschancen sowohl in Westeuropa
Pre-Cured Retreading in the EU – Market Share
Kaltrunderneuerung in der EU – Marketing
Although new opportunities for retreading are opening up, especially
in East European markets, a proportion of this growth will
come at the expense of traditional names in the European retreading
scene. The Galgo general manager speaks of there being a
“Big Three” in the European pre-cured retreading scene – Marangoni/Ellerbrock,
Bandag and Kraiburg – who hold an estimated 60
per cent of the pre-cured retreading market. “We now see a clear
‘big three’, whose position gets challenged by new market players
from outside Europe,” says Joe Krimpenfort.
Something else to change in the last year is the cost of oil, currently
some 70 per cent higher than a year earlier. This marked
jump in fuel prices has of course made the saving of fuel by any
means possible something few fleet users can afford to ignore.
an industry buzzword, the actual technology has been with us for
some time. “Rolling resistance is nothing new to Galgo,” he said.
“Right from the start of our entry in the European market in 2003,
all of Galgo's treads for long distance applications have been
compounded with raw materials that reduce rolling resistance.
Retreaders as well as end users in long haulage transport
applications do specify Galgo treads not only for the superior
mileage performance, but also for the fuel economy that Galgo's
products deliver.”
The company used the Reifen 2008 exhibition in Essen, Germany
as a stage for publicly launching a number of new products,
and Galgo reports that their larger 2,000 square metre warehouse
in Tongeren, Belgium is now in full operation, well stocked with “A”
items. According to the Galgo general manager, inventory turnover
there has reached an all-time high.
When T&A last spoke with Mr. Krimpenfort, Galgo was searching
for a new UK & Ireland sales representative. Since that time,
the retreading materials supplier has appointed Doug Howell from
Shropshire based Tyre Supplies International Ltd. (TSI) exclusive
sales agent for Galgo Pre-Q pre-cured treads, in the UK and Ireland
(both Northern Ireland and Eire). Mr. Krimpenfort reports being delighted
with the appointment, as Galgo’s products tie in perfectly
with TSI’s existing activities – the supply of TRM tyre retreading
machinery, Pincott Rasp Blades, Robbins envelopes and ancillary
retreading products. Orders taken through TSI can, he adds, be dispatched
within 24 hours and be with customers within five days.
To almost double one’s market share within five years may
seem an ambitious target, yet Galgo, who has only been active in
Europe for five years and already holds a respectable slice of the
pre-cured retreading cake, is confident this goal is well within its
grasp. "We have over two hundred happy customers spread all
over Europe,” says Mr. Krimpenfort. “And in the four years we have
been going, we have not lost a single customer. This speaks very
highly of the product line, but also of the service we can offer.”
weiter, sei bereits seit einiger Zeit bekannt.
Lücke, betont Krimpenfort nun, habe man erfolgreich schließen
Kunden verloren. Dies betont in hohem Maße die Qualität unseres
Sortiments, aber auch unserer Dienstleistungen.”
Hamburg Distribution Centre Offers Vipal Further
Opportunities
When Brazilian based retreading materials supplier Borrachas
Vipal boosted its European market presence in
2005 with the opening of its first distribution centre, the
company’s goal was to be one of the largest suppliers of tyre
retreading and repair material on the continent, a brand recognised
for the quality of its products. Vipal Europe believes this goal has
been, three years later, well and truly reached, and confirmation of
the company’s ever-stronger position in Europe can be witnessed
through the establishment of a third distribution centre in the region.
The original centre, in Valencia Spain, and the company’s
second, in Logatec, Slovenia, have until now served Vipal well in
Europe. However in October 2007 the company’s board of directors
approved a number of ‘macro strategies’ for the European retreading
market, and these strategies included ways to better serve
growing markets. “Vipal believes that the
retreading market must be attended from up
close, and that the only way to be a main
player is being present in the market
with product and personal assistance,”
explains Manager of Vipal Europe,
Mr. Alessandro Campos.
In particular, developments in Western
Europe prompted the need to re-consider
logistical practicalities. “The increase in
sales in Germany, Benelux, Poland and
Czech were our supporting factors,” says
Mr. Campos, “however these countries were
being attended from our distribution centre
in Slovenia and the distance was not
allowing much further expansion.” Therefore
a new location for a distribution centre was
sought, and for a number of reasons the
company decided upon Hamburg, Germany.
Vipal’s new Hamburg distribution centre,
in operation since May 2008, is located in the
vicinity of Hamburg’s ‘Free Habour’ and
enjoys good access to Europe’s second
largest port complex. As Mr. Campos comments:
“The harbour in this city is internationally
known and has excellent shipping connections with the
Brazilian ports we use. Additionally, it is a central position to attend
the markets mentioned above.”
With a new location for market supply now established, Vipal
again has the infrastructure it needs for continued European
Als der brasilianische Runderneuerungsspezialist und klare
Marktführer in seinem Heimatmarkt Südamerika Borrachas
mittlerweile dritten Distributionszentrums..
growth. According to Mr. Dijan Rigo, a member of Vipal Europe’s
Commercial and Technical Support team in charge of central
Europe, the Hamburg distribution centre will further the company’s
market supply in the region in three distinct stages. The first stage
involves attending markets where Vipal is already present, such as
Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and the Benelux countries –
all markets that, as Alessandro Campos mentioned, were determining
factors in opening the centre. Mr. Rigo comments that delivery
times to these markets are up to 50 per cent shorter when serviced
from Hamburg, and freight costs have also been reduced. The
second and third stages consist of expansion to new markets, in
Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. A date for these expansion
plans has not been disclosed.
As with its other European distribution centres, Vipal’s presence
in Hamburg is operated by an internationally known logistics firm,
an arrangement Mr. Campos says allows the company to concentrate
its efforts in areas where it is strongest – product development,
sales and customer service. The company supplies Vipal with
floorspace from a service area of approximately 21,000 square
metres, and when Tyres & Accessories visited the facility the
warehouse was filled almost to the ceiling with Vipal and Ruzi
(see textbox) brand product on some 8,500 pallet places. There is,
however, ample room for more when the need arises.
The company’s sales and administrative team continues to
operate out of Valencia, Spain, and from here the Vipal Europe
commercial team travels throughout the region to meet with
customers. Products supplied are all sourced from Vipal’s factories
in the Americas. The retreader’s manufacturing unit in Nova Prata,
Brazil is at present operating at full capacity, producing an average
of 13,000 tonnes of rubber monthly. The new factory in Bahia, Brazil,
opened this year, will increase rubber mixture manufacturing
capacity to 18,000 tonnes, and work is currently underway on Vipal’s
first factory to be located outside of Brazil. The US$40 million facility
in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes is expected to be operational
in mid 2009 and give Vipal better access to NAFTA markets.
zu können. Zum Team, das für die kommerzielle
und technische Unterstützung
der Kunden in Zentraleuropa zuständig
ist, gehört auch Dijan Rigo: Ausgehend
vom Hamburger Distributionszentrum
seien drei klare Aufgaben festgelegt:
Die Pflege der bestehenden Märkte wie
Deutschland, Tschechien, Polen und
Benelux ist Aufgabe Nummer eins, die
Märkte, die Campos erwähnt hat und
die die ausschlaggebenden Faktoren
für die Etablierung des Hamburger
Distributionszentrums waren. Um bis
zur Hälfte der Zeit verringere sich jetzt
die Belieferung von Kunden, so Rigo,
ein weiterer Effekt: Die Frachtkosten
konnten verringert werden. Stufe zwei
international renommierten Logistikexperten zusammen.
Kommissionier-/Serviceflächen von knapp 21.000 Quadratmetern;
Ruzi to supply Europe’s ‘other’
retreading market
In May 2008, the month Vipal launched operations at its Hamburg
distribution centre, the company officially presented its new Ruzi
brand of retreading materials. This second product line, explains
Mrs. Maria Locatelli, provides Vipal with opportunities in yet another
sector of the retreading market: “We understand that there
are two different markets in Europe, one which demands high
quality products which we can attend with the Vipal brand, and
one of fierce competition, which demands cost,” Mrs. Locatelli
explains. “The Ruzi brand of treads will be one more option for
this competitive market.” The pre-cured tread material is aimed
primarily at medium and long-haul applications.
stephen.goodchild@tyrepress.com
„Ruzi“ für den „anderen“ europäischen
Runderneuerungsmarkt
offiziell in Europa eingeführt.
The Rösler Group:
On The Way to Becoming
A “Total EM Tyre
Management System
Provider”
From Retreading to New Tyres,
Establishing an End User Presence
The path of development follows a natural course and is absolutely
logical: First the Rösler group covered all facets of earthmover
tyre retreading, then entered the original equipment
market with the “Winstone” brand of new tyres – and now the company
has taken the final step in regard to its range of products and
services for mine and opencast pit end users. The company is already
on target on its “way to being a Total EM Tyre Management System
Provider,” says Klaus Mühlbäck, international business Vice
President for ‘Rösler Tyre Innovators’; a company title that made its
debut several months ago at the Essen tyre show.
Approximately 200 people currently work for the group and it enjoys
a turnover in excess of 40 million Euros. The sole shareholder is the
Rösler family; the twins Paul and Martin Rösler serve as the company’s
Managing Directors. The group possesses three active subsidiaries,
Rodos, Schelkmann and Zeus. In the future Rösler 360°, a total
earthmover tyre service, will be added to this list. Also in operation at
the company’s headquarters in Dortmund, Germany are pre-cured
and hot process retreading facilities, and Rösler has established a
wealth of very specialised engineering knowledge. With this knowledge
it can offer licensors extensive technical assistance for its
SPR system (Schelkmann Precured Retreads) pre-cured retreading,
right up to the handover stage of a turnkey facility.
Rodos is the group’s foundation stone, established and built up
by entrepreneur Paul Rösler senior and still responsible for the hot
vulcanised retreading business unit. Schelkmann – named after the
man who developed the pre-cured retreading procedure and whose
company was overtaken by Rösler some twenty years ago – is more
than “just” an important retreader of earthmover tyres, as the company
also markets the SPR process worldwide and sets up license
partners not only with the materials for retreading, but also with the
equipment for the total manufacturing process. Finally, Zeus covers
the area of tyre filling and flat proofing technologies for heavy tyres.
That the Schelkmann business unit is of special importance to
Mühlbäck can be clearly discerned when he reports on this undoubtedly
most dynamic part of the group. Six SPR facilities are already in
Die Rösler-Unternehmensgruppe:
Auf dem Weg zum EM-
Reifen-Systemanbieter
Von der Runderneuerung übers Neureifenangebot
bis zum Einsatz beim
Endverbraucher
operation, to the customer’s complete
satisfaction. There is, of
course, the company’s model plant
at its headquarters, one plant in
Indonesia (“With which the cooperation
is very intensive”, reports
Mühlbäck) as well as one each in
Uzbekistan, Australia, the Czech
Republic and with OTR Tyres Ltd in
the UK. Construction of a seventh
facility, at “Kazakhmjs” in Kazakhstan,
is underway; the hall already
is built and the equipment will arrive
this year for installation in a second
phase, in the first quarter of
2009. In the second quarter of 2009
at the latest, “Kazakmjs” will produce
its first SPR tyres; the programme
covers 25 to 57 inch sizes.
Another licence agreement is already
undersigned, but the whole
project is at such an early stage
that no details can be mentioned.
As 63 inch tyres are at pre-
Kohle-Tagebergbau in Asien
sent a frequently discussed topic
(in addition to Michelin and
Bridgestone, Titan Tire also produces this size), the Rösler Group is
also considering the production of these giant tyres. In spite of
some definite handling difficulties this technology could be realised
by the Röslers, but for a “return on investment” the time is not yet
ripe. The worldwide coverage of machines using this kind of tyres
has not yet reached a critical mass. However, Mühlbäck concedes
frankly that there is a tendency towards ever bigger wheels on ever
larger vehicles, such as those that can be seen on the Canadian oil
sands. As long as the largest existing water autoclaves on the
market have an inner diameter of only 4,000 millimetres, there will
be no retreading of 63 inch tyres. It must also be added that the
refitting of an existing retreading plant to accommodate these huge
tyre dimensions appears virtually impossible, as totally new
construction would be necessary.
In becoming an EM tyre system provider that covers total tyre
management, understands vehicle usage intimately and is able to
recommend the right tread pattern as well as can guarantee the
correct air pressure, a second superordinate company objective
also comes under the spotlight: In former times the Rösler group
repeatedly made clear that it wants to import actively product from
low cost tyre suppliers, particularly those in China, but also more
recently from India. Thus the company has introduced a new tyre of
a quality intended to establish it in the premium segment.
For this new “Winstone” tyre brand, the Rösler group buys
carcasses from a European new tyre company and fits these new
carcasses with tread compounds produced by two leading European
brands. Winstone radial tyres are available in 25 inch sizes with tread
patterns for all imaginable uses, and the brand has already received
original equipment acceptance from one vehicle manufacturer. Thus
Surface coal mine in Asia
Sechs SPR-Produktionsstätten funktionieren bereits weltweit zur vollsten
Zufriedenheit.
27
a Winstone tyre differs from a Rodos tyre by its carcass, which for a
hot retreaded Rodos has already been used and might have
repaired, and by the specification of the tread rubber compound.
It has become well known in recent years that – especially in the
larger dimensions – earthmover tyres are a rare commodity worldwide.
Reports that vehicle producers sometimes sell their huge
earthmovers without tyres and customers have to search for their
own tyre sources are not just idle rumours. And Mühlbäck is deeply
convinced that a pre-cured Schelkmann tyre has, in comparison to a
new tyre, the same performance. But when asking him about the
supply of retreaded tyres for original equipment, he moans: “A lot of
convincing is still required.”
And this convincing would be best done through practical
testing. If the vehicle manufacturer cannot be convinced directly,
potentially an end user can achieve this. At present Rösler has two
projects: In Indonesia SPR tyres in the sizes 27.00 R49 and 33.00 R51
have already had 2,500 to 3,000 hours in use (at the time of writing
this article in mid-August), and from the original tread depth of 50
millimetres, 35 millimetres still remain. Even more impressive, we
learn, are the results of a second test in an Canadian smelter under
extreme operating conditions, which – in the words of Mühlbäck –
has the potential to become a new world record: After 2,200 hours in
use there are, from the original depth of 88 millimetres, still 75 millimetres
remaining! Whoever can produce such results need not
struggle to convince end users that they offer the right product for
the right application. This is all-round tyre management. Rösler
presented this range at the “Heavy Duty Equipment Tyre
Conference” in Brisbane, Australia, some months ago. Conference
delegates – experts in mining and also in tyres – know what “Rösler
360°” is.
konkreten Einsatz in nichts nachstehen würde.
Derzeit laufen zwei Projekte: In
A Driving Force
Goodway MD,
Alison Wong,
becomes COO
As managing director of Malaysia’s Goodway, Alison
Wong (Wong Ping Kiong) was seen as instrumental
to many of the company’s successes. 2008 sees her
assume the role of Chief Operating Officer
Sales at Goodway Integrated Industries have been healthy these
last few years, to say the least. In 2007, the company reported
turnover of RM209 million (42.2 million euros), 70 per cent of
which was derived from its rubber compound products and the remainder
from retreading operations. Goodway attributes a proportion
of its good fortune during the last few years to its then managing director,
Alison Wong, whom the company has called “a driving force
behind Goodway’s many successes.”
Ms Wong has been with the company since its inception in 1989,
beginning as an account executive. On 1January 2008 the Malaysia
based retreader and retreading materials supplier recognised Ms
Wong’s aptitude and potential, and appointed her to the position of
chief operating officer. During her first year in this new role, Ms Wong
speaks of her new role and what lies around the corner for Goodway.
In her new capacity as COO, Ms Wong sees her main responsibility
as facilitating the company’s vision and mission. “The strategic
direction of the group, namely growth, expansion and continuous improvement
is my priority,” she says. Elaborating, Ms Wong adds: “My
tasks encompass managing liquidity and profitability, mitigating financial
risks and meeting targets. At the same time, I will be keeping an
eye out for potential business ventures and market developments to
adjust the Group’s strategies as necessary.”
The company’s flagship retread range, Supercool, has been on the
market for several years now and the products on offer in this brand
have been constantly updated. Indeed, in May this year the Supercool
Cushion Gum CG99, manufactured using pine tar free compounds,
was one of the highlights of Goodway’s company display at the
Reifen 2008 show. The value of the Supercool brand name to Goodway
is significant, and thus it is no surprise it also forms a focus for the
new COO. “I want to raise Supercool’s profile in the global arena via
our branding efforts,” says Ms Wong. “Our marketing activities will
highlight our core values of trustworthiness and integrity, to reflect the
respectability and renown of the Supercool name.”
Other factors – both positive and negative – influence the decisions
Ms Wong makes for the Malaysian firm. While rapid growth can
be considered a dream come true scenario for Goodway, every silver
lining has a cloud, one might say. Thus, a challenge for Ms Wong in
Alison Wong
zum COO ernannt
Als Geschäftsführerin von Goodway aus Malaysia war
Alison Wong (Wong Ping Kiong) bisher schon die treibende
Kraft hinter zahlreichen Unternehmenserfolgen.
Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Die Umsätze von Goodway Integrated Industries waren während
der vergangenen zwei Jahre „überaus gesund”, um
nicht zu übertreiben. Im vergangenen Jahr etwa meldete
das Unternehmen einen Umsatz in Höhe von 209 Millionen Ringgit
2008 is to make sure the company is prepared to be ready for expansion.
Part of this, she says, is to ensure that the company has
“adequate human capital, and that our people are prepared to
progress with the forecasted rapid growth.”
Another challenge for the entire industry is escalating raw material
prices, but despite the doom and gloom from many quarters the
COO sees this issue in a potentially positive light. “Rising oil prices are
escalating costs in the transportation industry,” she explains, “so
retreading is one way to ease this pressure. Retreading is cost
efficient as a reusable resource, and value for money. We can turn this
threat into an opportunity with our established reputation for premium
quality retreads that consistently deliver high performance, durability
and safety. This way, we cement our position as market leaders.”
That said, Ms Wong admits that even Goodway is not immune
from the problems every company is experiencing with raw material
prices. On 1 July the Tyre Retreading Manufacturers’ Association of
Malaysia announced its second price rise this year for retreaded
tyres, with increases between 5 and 18 per cent expected. Goodway
must also act in this area to remain competitive, Ms Wong admits:
“We continue finding ways to lower production costs to ease our
end-users’ burden. However, price increments are inevitable and I
plan to spread this cost equally between all dealers and end-users.
Customers can be assured the premium is fair and wholly justified
because we will not compromise on quality, processes or materials
regardless of economic pressures.” sg
nehmen soll”, so Wong. Weiter: „Meine Aufgaben umfassen
ihrer unternehmerischen Schwerpunkte sieht. „Ich will den Bekanntheitsgrad
von Supercool weltweit weiter steigern und werde
dabei verschiedene Anstrengungen unternehmen”, so Wong. „Unsere
also die richtigen Mitarbeiter einzustellen.
Goodway, so Wong weiter.
Marangoni Produced
ContiTread Range
Gives Conti a
New ‘Global Scope’
In June the Marangoni Group and Continental AG
signed a Memorandum of Understanding, under
which the production and marketing rights for the
ContiTread pre-cure treads was transferred to
the Italian company. Production, which has already
begun, is being carried out in the Marangoni
owned Ellerbrock facility in Hamburg, Germany.
The people at Conti declined to specify exactly how much this
deal is worth, however it is clear that from the German company’s
perspective, a main benefit of this new arrangement is
that it opens the door to numerous new markets. “The prior agreement
with Bandag was limited to Europe,” comments Eckhard Wilanek,
Continental’s Managing Director of Fleet & Retread Business.
“The new agreement with Marangoni has a global scope and is not
limited to Europe.”
The ContiTread product produced in Hamburg will differ slightly
from the previous ContiTread, adds Wilanek. The flat tread, as opposed
to the contoured tread supplied in 10.5 metre lengths, will be a
flat tread that is cut to length (approximately 3.3 metres). The trailer
pattern will feature ‘wings’ that reinforce the tyre’s shoulder for
lateral force distribution. All compounds used in the manufacturing
process will conform to Continental standards.
Tread patterns available in the ContiTread range have also been
revised upon the shift in production to the Ellerbrock factory. The
tread liner programme, says Wilanek, will be adjusted to match the
tread patterns used in the latest new tyres released by Continental.
ContiTread erhält globale
Reichweite durch
Marangoni-Abkommen
Durch ein so genanntes „Memorandum of
Understanding” zwischen der Marangoni-Gruppe und
der Continental AG sind die Herstellungs- und
Vermarktungsrechte am Sortiment an ContiTread-
Kaltlaufstreifen an den italienischen Runderneuerungskonzern
übergegangen. Die Herstellung der
Laufstreifen hat bereits bei der deutschen Marangoni-
Tochter Ellerbrock in Henstedt-Ulzburg nördlich von
Hamburg begonnen.
waren, so Wilanek weiter.
konturierten Laufstreifen in 10,50 Länge.
Laufstreifenprogramm, so Wilanek, werde
auf das Neureifenprogramm der Continental
abgestimmt.
