14.2 Related Work<br />

Following the recommendations of Webster and Watson [2002], our literature analysis<br />

targeted leading IS research outlets. We selected ten journals 20 based on a catalog provided<br />

by the London School of Economics [Willcocks, Whitley, Avgerou 2008]. Our<br />

keyword search resulted in 292 articles, of which we found 26 to be relevant, including<br />

in a backward search ( Abb. 33).<br />

In general, each of the identified publications target one of three subsequent objectives.<br />

The first group, rooted in psychology, designs techniques for user-group segmentation.<br />

All these concepts deal with cognitive style. That is the way in which individuals<br />

tend to grasp information (e.g., quantitatively vs. qualitatively) and how they<br />

apply this information when making decisions (e.g., logical argumentation vs. intuition).<br />

Examples are the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator [Myers 1976] or Witkins concept<br />

of field dependence/field independence [Witkin et al. 1977].<br />

The second group covers the characterization of user groups. Two different approaches<br />

exist. Either the studies apply the techniques employed in the first group to explore<br />
