Finally, the implications identified for functional requirements tend to focus narrowly
on specific functionalities, such as explanations, data quality information, or quantitative
and qualitative information. We think it would be more beneficial to provide a
commonly accepted model for MSS functionalities (comparably to Walstrom and Wilson
[1997]) to integrate user-specific requirements accordingly and identify further
research potential.
12.4 Summary of Findings
This study conducted a literature analysis in order to systemize and synthesize the current
body of knowledge in the field of user-centric MSS development. This analysis
identified a number of potential areas for future research: (1) examining the effect of
user preferences on constructional requirements and principles for MSS design, (2)
increasing focus on concrete design principles rather than just requirements identification,
(3) providing a commonly accepted definition of relevant user groups and associated
preferences, and (4) increasing the focus on developing comprehensive models
of functionalities for a limited set of user groups. The analysis also shows that potential
exists to improve this review by expanding the range of literature examined – by
adding conference proceedings and especially practitioner journals.
Our own future research will be twofold. On the one hand, we will improve the literature
analysis as discussed. On the other hand, we will contribute to improved MSS
design by identifying executive user groups that places greater emphasis on working
style. To do so, we will analyze an empirical study that was recently conducted to explore
executives’ individual preferences in leveraging MSS and synthesize the findings
to a set of distinct user groups.
