An African team among the last four at the Football World Championship in South
Africa – this would be an ideal scenario for the air freight and ocean freight team
of ITG in Munich because in that case many fan articles would be bought and ITG
would organize the logistics for many of them.
ITG has proven many times why it is one of the preferred service providers for
merchandising logistics. The Football World Cup 2006 in Germany was a kind of
masterpiece in this regard. Recently, the ITG specialists gained a lot of reputation
by various activities at the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria and
Switzerland. The tournament was not even over when ITG began the preparations
for South Africa – “after the game is before the game”, just like legendary German
coach Sepp Herberger stated!
In spring 2008 an ITG team checked the local infrastructure, the prerequisites
for customs, storage and transportation and shared information on all customer
demands with the local partner. All stages of the fan articles’ journey – balls,
caps, t-shirts and much more – are controlled and monitored by the ITG team
and supported by ITG’s IT systems: order-based coordination of suppliers, pickup,
export clearance, transportation by air and sea, import customs clearance,
interim storage in Durban, and optionally final distribution to the distribution
centers, branch offices or to the point of purchase of the consignee.
A serious practical test for ITG was the world-wide distribution of the first lot of footballs in autumn 2009, even before the
official presentation of the ball in December 2009. “For this job we had to stick to top secret and security levels in the entire
organization and all worked out fine”, says Ralph Biller, Branch Manager Intercontinental in Munich.
ITG’s local partner in South Africa for this project is GAC. The companies have been successfully cooperating for many
years. The joint venture GAC Laser International Logistics is in charge of the forwarding and storing of the goods within the
supply chain operated by ITG. While people all over the world begin to feel anticipation for the big sports event, ITG employees
work highly concentrated. The closer the event approaches the faster the team must act. Every foreseeable detail
has been professionally planned by the involved parties. For the unforeseeable they will find a solution – as always.
