BICYCLE MAINTENANCE
First servicing
During the bicycle’s breaking-in period, the bicycle parts settle into place, which is
why we recommend the first servicing to be carried out after you have ridden c. 200
km. The inspection should include brake and gear adjustments, checking the
bearings, tightening the screws and nuts, balancing the front and back wheel,
tightening the spokes and, on bicycles with hub gears, an adjustment of the tension
of the chain. It is especially important to check the spokes, since the spokes and the
male couplings of the spokes only settle in place after being broken in. It is
recommended to let a professional tighten the spokes.
Regular maintenance
For the safety and long-life of your bicycle, we recommend maintenance intervals of
about six months (for example, in the spring and autumn), at which time the brakes,
gears, bearings, pedals, wheels, chains, lock and cables should be checked, cleaned
and lubricated. An easy way to take care of regular maintenance is to take your bike
to a Helkama dealer.
DO NOT USE A HIGH PRESSURE SPRAY WASHER!
Brakes
Coaster brakes built into the hub do not require any special care or adjustments.
They should be checked at the same time as the hub. If the coaster brakes require
repairs, consult a Helkama dealer.
The distance between the rim brake pads and the rim of the wheel is about 2-3 mm.
The distance can be adjusted on the adjuster sleeve by the cable casing. The brake
pads must be set in the center of the rim (Fig. 7). Worn out brake pads must be
replaced.
Make sure not to get lubricant or wax on the rim or brake pads.
