e.g., where large formats of size 600 mm x
400 mm and a nominal thickness of 160 mm are concerned.
This particular format is subject to the regulations
of DIN EN 1338:2003 – Concrete paving blocks.
Contractors are obligated to execute their performance
free from defects at the time of acceptance and in
compliance with approved technical practice. One requirement
that is all too often underestimated is the suffi
cient slip/skid resistance of the upper sides of large formats.
Proof of suffi cient slip/skid resistance must be
provided in particular for elements with ground or polished
surface. It is obvious that this is an essential requirement
for pavements in pedestrian zones.
Another prerequisite for the good walkability of traffi c
areas is a pavement with surface-level joints. Owing to the
dimension of the elements with an edge length of up to
1,250 mm and an off set of ≤ 2 mm (DIN 18318), at-grade
connections are diffi cult to achieve, even with construction
products with level surfaces. This requirement can
only be met with large formats of very high dimensional
accuracy that exceed the requirements of TL Pfl aster-StB.
For this, appropriate values for the permissible tolerances
have to be established in the planning phase and in the
contractual requirements.
The parties involved are often unaware of the high
traffi c loads that actually occur in the pedestrian zones of
medium and major centers. The special loadings imposed
by delivery traffi c, e.g. during maneuvering in extremely
confi ned areas, are all too often underestimated. Although
the structural component is an important factor in dimensioning
the large formats and the upper pavement structure,
even more attention must be paid to the dynamic
loading imposed by heavy-duty traffi c. The permanently
stable position of the surfacing can only be ensured with
large formats of appropriate thickness and an appropriate
pavement base.
These and other requirements have to be considered
in the planning phase and in drawing up the tender specifi
cation to forestall endless disputes during the subsequent
execution of the work.

z. B. beim Rangieren auf
engstem Raum, werden allzu
häufi g unterschätzt. Bei der Bemessung
der Großformate und
des Oberbaus ist die statische
Komponente zwar wichtig, ein
größeres Augenmerk muss auf
die dynamische Belastung aus
dem Schwerverkehr gelegt werden.
Die dauerhaft stabile Lage der Oberfl äche kann nur
durch eine entsprechende Dicke der Großformate und
einen entsprechenden Oberbau gewährleistet werden.
Bereits in der Planungsphase und bei der Ausschreibung
müssen diese und noch weitere Anforderungen beachtet
werden, damit es bei der anschließenden Ausführung der
Bauleistung nicht zu endlosen Streitigkeiten kommt.
