and interlink it with day-to-day practice, guiding principles
need to be developed to include sustainability aspects
in the design, execution, use and demolition of concrete
structures. For this purpose,
» sustainability aspects must be incorporated in existing
design and execution principles,
» existing procedures to assess sustainable construction
must be tailored to the requirements and parameters of
concrete construction,
» the parties involved in construction must be provided
with proposals for technical solutions, considering, in
particular, the points of transition between individual
phases of the life cycle,
» design tools and new information and communications
tools must be developed specifi cally for the individual
parties involved to ensure the transfer of relevant information
along the entire life cycle.
On the basis of these requirements, the Deutsche Ausschuss
für Stahlbeton (DAfStb; German Committee for
Structural Concrete) has prepared, as the key research
outcome, a DAfStb guideline containing “Principles for
Sustainable Concrete Construction” (GrunaBau) as part of
a joint research project (completed in October 2009) funded
by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research
(BMBF) and various associations and industry partners.
The implementation of these principles in both standardization
and construction practice is ensured by merging
all industry interests, including those of structural engineers,
building materials producers, the construction industry,
authorities and government agencies, private and
public clients, in the DAfStb and by establishing a close
collaboration between the DAfStb and the Deutsches Institut
für Normung (DIN; German Institute for Standardization).
Due to the complexity of the research topics, a
broad basis was created for the research program, including
six subprojects and one central project to coordinate
all activities. These are:
» Project A: Sustainability assessment of concrete structures
» Project B: Potentials for the use of secondary materials
in concrete construction
» Project C: Resource- and energy-effi cient, adaptable
building concepts in multi-story construction
» Project D: Life cycle management system
» Project E: Guaranteeing environmental compatibility
effi ciently
» Project F: Information platform
» Central project Z: Coordination of the joint research by
the DAfStb
The results of the fi rst project phase can be accessed at
www.nbb-forschung.de. The “GrunaBau” document should
support the main parties involved in concrete construction
in the implementation of sustainable construction in their
day-to-day professional practice. The route towards achieving
this goal begins with an explanation of the fundamental
sustainability aspects and includes guidance regarding the
fl ow of information and recommendations for technical
implementation. As a result, the “GrunaBau” document
achieves a degree of detail that had not been implemented
previously in concrete construction, which, in turn, leads to
a large-scale eff ect across the industry and provides an important
building block for sustainable construction that
complements the range of design and evaluation aids available
for the certifi cation of the sustainability of buildings
within the BMVBS system [1].
eingerichtet. Diese sind im Einzelnen:
» Projekt A: Nachhaltigkeitsbeurteilung baulicher Lösungen
aus Beton
» Projekt B: Potenziale des Sekundärstoff einsatzes im
Betonbau
» Projekt C: Ressourcen- und energieeffi ziente, adaptive
Gebäudekonzepte im Geschossbau
» Projekt D: Lebensdauermanagementsystem
» Projekt E: Effi ziente Sicherstellung der Umweltverträglichkeit
» Projekt F: Informationsplattform
» Zentralprojekt Z: Koordination des Verbundforschungsvorhabens
durch den DAfStb
Die Ergebnisse der ersten Projektphase sind unter
www.nbb-forschung.de zusammengestellt.
