In dem von Alfred Banze geleiteten Workshop gingen die Schülerinnen und Schüler dem
Ungesehenen und Ungehörten mit Audiorecordern und Videokameras auf die Spur. Das, was
zwar wahrnehmbar ist, sich unserer ziel- und gewöhnungsorientierten Wahrnehmung jedoch
gemeinhin entzieht, stand hier im Zentrum. Dabei blieben die TeilnehmerInnen jedoch nicht
beim Erfassen und Dokumentieren des im Alltag Vernachlässigten stehen, sondern kombinierten
neu, erkundeten die bewusst verschobenen Relationen von Ton- und Bildspuren.
Anhand der künstlerischen Arbeit Alfred Banzes für die Ausstellung werden die zentralen Fragen
und Ideen des Projekts in besonderer Weise deutlich. „Crossing the line“ ist der Titel seiner
Installation, in der er Zeichnungen, handschriftliche Notizen, Audio- und Videoaufzeichnungen
verarbeitet und miteinander kombiniert. Unterwegs in Japan, Thailand, Indien, China, Fji und
Berlin entstanden, bildet dieses Material die Grundlage für eine, wie Alfred Banze es selbst
ausdrückt, virtuell-reale Reise. Bilder überlagern sich, Zusammenhänge werden geschaffen,
visuelle und akustische Muster entstehen und lösen sich sogleich wieder auf, um Platz zu
machen für Neues.
Die Arbeiten von Jerome Ming und Varsha Nair entsprechen in starkem Maße dem Untertitel
der Ausstellung: A language in between. Seit kurzem in Shanghai ansässig, hat Jerome Ming
in London, aber auch in verschiedenen afrikanischen Ländern gelebt. Seine fotografischen
Arbeiten befragen immer wieder das Eigene und das Fremde, sie oszillieren zwischen Aneignung
und Distanz und thematisieren die Folgen wirtschaftlicher wie politischer Eingriffe. Varsha
Nair, in Indien ebenso wie in London und Bangkok zu Hause, arbeitet an der Schnittstelle von
Zeichnung und Performance. Dabei fließen äußerst disparate Momente in ihre Arbeiten ein: bei
that are indeed perceptible, but tend to evade our senses which are otherwise preoccupied
by ingrained patterns of perception. However, the participants did more than simply capture
and document the neglected phenomena of everyday life. They created new combinations
and consciously explored shifts in the relationship between the audio and visual tracks.
Alfred Banze’s work for the exhibition lucidly illustrates the key questions and ideas behind this
project. ‘Crossing the line’ is the title of his installation which processes and combines a wealth
of drawings, handwritten notes, audio and video recordings. This material, which was gleaned
in Japan, Thailand and Berlin, forms the basis of what Alfred Banze calls a ‘virtual-real journey’.
Images superimpose each other, contexts are interlinked and connections are created, whilst
visual and acoustic patterns emerge and dissolve again to make room for the new.
The works by Jerome Ming and Varsha Nair have a strong affinity with the exhibition’s subtitle:
A language in between. Having recently moved to Shanghai, Jerome Ming has previously
lived in London and a variety of African countries. His photographic works repeatedly investigate
the self and the other; they oscillate between appropriation and detachment and address
the consequences of economic and political interventions. Varsha Nair, who is equally at home
in India, London and Bangkok, works at the interface of drawing and performance. In so doing,
entirely disparate aspects flow into her works. For instance, the drawings on show in the
exhibition combine uncertainty in face of political unrest and violence with elements of Indian
mythology.
‘Performance, Sound, Drawing, and Space‘, is the title of the two workshops that caused
the participants to overcome some challenging barriers. Students physically appropriated the
