In dem „The Gender of the City“ betitelten Workshop gingen Schülerinnen und Schüler
The ‘Pattern & Signs’ project embraces a broad spectrum of themes, touches on political,
social and socio-cultural issues and reflects the diversity of interplay in everyday life as
seen with the immediacy of the artist’s investigative eye. The exhibition and workshops are
based on a network of internationally active artists; a network that has developed over years,
spans different generations and resulted in a joint exhibition under the same title in the city of
Bangkok in January 2011. In Berlin, the Kunstverein Tiergarten art association and the Menzel
Gymnasium, who have been working together for many years, have now realized this joint
project. Since artistic production and communication have now become so closely linked and
mutually depen dent, the combination of the two different spheres seemed very promising: the
artists from China, India, Cameroon, Romania, Thailand and Germany were invited to develop
workshops with the students from the Menzel Gymnasium on the theme of pattern and signs,
whilst opening their own work up to discussion in an extensive exhibition. The longstanding
fruitful co-operation between the Kunstverein Tiergarten and the Menzel School, supported by
the Berlin Project Fund for Cultural Education, has enabled us to focus efforts on a prominent
project for the first time.
The project’s five central workshops reflect different thematic facets and highlight a great
range of artistic approaches:
In ‘The Gender of the City’ workshop, school students explored the topic of gender-relevant
signs, patterns and situations in the urban context. Under the guidance of their mentors
Katharina Koch and Joanne Richardson, the students playfully investigated their immediate
3
erfasst Joanne Richardson postkommunistische Entwicklungen in tagebuchähnlichen Filmsequenzen.
and Signs in Daily Life“.
surroundings with the camera. In so doing, relevant issues surrounding migration, integration,
inter-cultural relations in everyday life, stereotype formation and social differences automatically
came to light.
The exhibition includes works by Katharina Koch and Joanne Richardson, two artists who
repeatedly transcend the boundaries of theory and practice. Both live and work not only in
Berlin, but also in southeast Europe, especially in Romania, and both have a definite interest
in gender themes. Although their filmic works are based on similar material, they are nevertheless
entirely different. Whereas Katharina Koch analytically focuses the camera on a Romanian
artists’ group, Joanne Richardson captures post-communist developments in diary-like film
sequences.
In the workshop headed by Li Lisha (Peking) and Christine Falk (Berlin), students addressed
the theme of ‘Patterns and Signs in Daily Life’. In her works for the exhibition the Chinese artist
has centred her attention on the doily, a quirky everyday item which is now totally outdated
in Europe, but is considered very trendy in China. In her drawings and collages she monitors
the doilies’ environments and the intrinsic meanings that permeate them in different cultural
contexts. The students were stimulated by these ideas which they picked up and transferred,
for instance into the animal world as traffic signs. In this way they wittily implemented the
doilies to transform codes of everyday life into the absurd. In addition to this, a variety of
completely different signs, such as pictograms or ritualised facial expressions, flowed into the
pool of visual elements that inspired the workshop themes. In contrast, Christine Falk’s works
are strongly reminiscent of the early 20th-century European avant-garde as well as tendencies
4
synthetisiert insofern differente kulturelle Kontexte.
towards concrete approaches. Yet the fascinating twist is that this artist works on the basis of
photographs mostly taken in Asia. So in this respect, Christine Falk is also involved in creating
syntheses from different cultural contexts.
In the very best sense, the works of Doris Hinzen-Röhrig (Berlin) and Petra Jung (Saarbrücken)
pursue the traditional approaches of drawing, painting and sculpture. They both share
an urge to reflect on existential values and questions concerning the positioning of the subject.
Consequently, Doris Hinzen-Röhrig combines materials found in newspapers with reduced
figural ciphers which form enigmatic patterns conveying archetypal associations.
Petra Jung’s drawings bear references to Thai myths which she encountered during a workshop
in Bangkok. These myths captured her imagination because, despite the great contrast
in her cultural roots, they display ingenious affinities with the artist’s own interest in transformations
and metamorphoses.
The workshop entitled ‘A New Logo for Moabit’, led by Doris Hinzen-Röhrig and Petra Jung,
was linked closely with the immediate local context. At the same time, the workshop activities
focussed strongly on artistic approaches in creating such a logo. The students began by collecting
materials and ideas about Berlin’s district of Moabit. This research phase was followed by
the exploration of various artistic options and techniques, and finally led to the production of
concrete logo proposals.
In the workshop headed by Alfred Banze, the students set out to discover the unseen and
the unheard with audio recorders and video cameras. In this case the focus was on things
5
Das, was
der Ausstellung: A language in between.
that are indeed perceptible, but tend to evade our senses which are otherwise preoccupied
by ingrained patterns of perception. However, the participants did more than simply capture
and document the neglected phenomena of everyday life. They created new combinations
and consciously explored shifts in the relationship between the audio and visual tracks.
Alfred Banze’s work for the exhibition lucidly illustrates the key questions and ideas behind this
project. ‘Crossing the line’ is the title of his installation which processes and combines a wealth
of drawings, handwritten notes, audio and video recordings. This material, which was gleaned
in Japan, Thailand and Berlin, forms the basis of what Alfred Banze calls a ‘virtual-real journey’.
Images superimpose each other, contexts are interlinked and connections are created, whilst
visual and acoustic patterns emerge and dissolve again to make room for the new.
The works by Jerome Ming and Varsha Nair have a strong affinity with the exhibition’s subtitle:
A language in between. Having recently moved to Shanghai, Jerome Ming has previously
lived in London and a variety of African countries. His photographic works repeatedly investigate
the self and the other; they oscillate between appropriation and detachment and address
the consequences of economic and political interventions. Varsha Nair, who is equally at home
in India, London and Bangkok, works at the interface of drawing and performance. In so doing,
entirely disparate aspects flow into her works. For instance, the drawings on show in the
exhibition combine uncertainty in face of political unrest and violence with elements of Indian
mythology.
‘Performance, Sound, Drawing, and Space‘, is the title of the two workshops that caused
the participants to overcome some challenging barriers. Students physically appropriated the
Was überall,
zwischen Kunstverein und Schule: A project in between! Verschiedene Kontexte,
rooms of the Galerie Nord, temporarily traversing them with lines and continuing their markings
through the large gallery windows into the external urban space. Everything that happened,
in the Menzel School and in the urban space, culminated briefly in a body-mind network that
created visibly palpable traces within the exhibition.
‘Pattern & Signs’ is an ongoing project: this documentation represents a brief snapshot of
four intense weeks of close collaboration between artists and school students, between an art
association and a school. So it’s ‘a project in between!’ In a great variety of contexts, people
from more than 20 nations and actors from all generations have performed, painted, created
collages, filmed and above all joined in a lively dialogue. They ceaselessly discussed patterns
and signs, everyday life and norms, music and gender, art, creativity and life. And for all this
we would like to say thank you to everyone involved – to the artists, the initiators, the organisers,
our sponsors and, last but not least, the many highly motivated students from the Menzel
Gymnasium!
Today/tomorrow is an installation involving a series of actions that evolved over several weeks,
responding and transforming to situations in the gallery, including the preparations for the exhibition,
the workshops and the public presentations. The installation incorporates a set of five
photographs I produced in Cameroon. The work partly deals with displacement and explores
connections between a personal history and a perception of an identity. Jerome Ming
